In terms of noise, Zalman Z11 NEO showed the average result. The case cannot be called quiet - five full-time fans still make themselves felt. It is a pity that the Z11 NEO is not originally equipped with refobas.

Without exaggeration, the Zalman Z11 NEO case deserves praise: he pleased with the efficiency of cooling, especially video cards, which for the game PC is one of the important factors. And of course, it is impossible to divide the good with the body, the presence of five fans in the standard configuration, as well as the ability to place on the top panel thick radiator SJO.

As for the shortcomings, there were no significant minuses in Zalman Z11 NEO. It would be possible to make face to the trifles like disposable plugs of the expansion slots, but this is nothing, especially if you consider not too high the cost of Zalman Z11 NEO - about 4,500 rubles in the Moscow retail at the time of publication of the article (December 2015).

The chassis in both models is the same, and the differences mostly relate to external design: Z11 is clearly designed for those who prefer unusual forms, and the Z9 on his background looks like a fragrant. Like the previous model, Z11 comes in two versions that differ in the equipment - the "top" option contains the word Plus in the designation. But here there are changes: the Z11 Plus lost the fan controller (in the Z9 Plus it was, albeit a simple) and the thermal sensor with a digital indicator, but acquired two USB 3.0 ports, which Z9 did not have. The number of fans has also changed: 5 regular instead of 4.

The Z11 variant differs from the Z11 Plus. The lack of USB 3.0 ports - instead there is another pair of USB 2.0, and there is also no one of the fans (top).

Like Z9, the Z11 enclosures should be attributed to the budget, but it did not affect the equipment: we saw a lot of more expensive models of other manufacturers who were equipped with poorer.

Layout

Housing Zalman Z11 Plus. It is a single-visuous Miditower with the lower position of the power supply, which is purchased separately. Color is offered only one - black.

There are five slots for 5.25-inch devices, all with access to the front panel. You can also install a 3.5-inch device in one of the slots, also with outward output: there is a corresponding adapter, and a stub with a slot.

Hard disks are installed in a transverse basket having five seats for 3.5-inch devices. One 2.5-inch HDD or SSD can be installed in a complete 5-inch compartment adapter and on the right side of the motherboard substrate.

You can install ATX system boards and increasingly compact options. The selection of video cards is limited to models up to 290 mm long, including an additional power connector, if it is located in the end of the board.

The accessories are fairly rich: sorted by packets fasteners in a normal amount, replaceable plugs for expansion slots, five disposable cable screed and power adapter for the processor. And, of course, the instruction is true, we got it without translation into Russian. All this is laid in a comfortable cover with a fastener.

Design

Talking about the plastic facial and top of the housing panels, we must use the words "complex shape" for the third time: it is difficult to describe it, it's best to look at the photo. Designers clearly gave the will of fantasy (of course, within the framework of the established budget), and this applies not only to the form, but even the colors: the lattice parts of the panels, covering the fans with illumination, are made translucent, and all other lights do not pass. The main part of the surfaces matte, but, as in Z9, there are elements with a gloss, and again those who are more often touched by hands.

The plugs of 5-inch slots are made of metal meshes with fine holes.

The Power button is located "on the forehead" of the housing (a bit of the beveled top of the front panel), so it will be noticeable and easily accessible at any location of the case - at least on the table, at least under the table. The blue indicator is built into it.

The remaining controls and switching bodies are placed in the front third of the top plastic panel. Moreover, in the middle there is a shallow niche of 10 × 12.5 cm in size, into which you can put the device connected USB cables. To the right of it closer to the front panel there are two USB 3.0 connector (in Z11 without Plus, two USB 2.0 ports instead), then the RESET button and a red disk activity indicator. On the left, there are two USB 2.0 connections and a pair of audioorts. A relatively small height of the housing during its desktop placement will allow you to use USB ports without getting up. But the HDD indicator at the same time will not be visible, and it is doubtful that it can be seen if the computer stands under the table.

Unfortunately, the presence of four USB ports with this location does not guarantee the ability to connect four devices with a noticeable width: the gap between the connectors in pairs is 13 mm.

Press the RESET button randomly can hardly succeed, but you can't tell this about Power: it practically does not have a free stroke, and you can turn off the computer with a light touch.

Ventilation system

In the Z11 Plus housing, there are five fans of their own production Zalman.

Frontal and upper size 120 × 120 mm have an unconnected blue backlight and are connected by 3-pin connectors to the system board (the built-in controller, as in the Z9 Plus, no). Instead, you can put 140-millimeter fans.

The third fan, on the rear wall of the chassis, also 120 mm, but without backlighting and connecting to the power unit using the Molex peripheral connector (double, Male + Female).

The possibility of upgrading the ventilation system is to install two more 120- or 140-millimeter fans: on the bottom of the chassis and second at the top.

Full filters are in front and bottom. To access the front filter, you will have to remove the front panel - this is not too time-consuming operation, but this filter cannot be called quick-release filter. It is made of a small-scale kapron mesh on a plastic frame, and exactly the same protects the place from dust for the optional lower fan. But the holes in the bottom of the chassis under the power supply closes the filter a little different design: this is a sheet of thin plastic with fine holes. Both lower filters are easily removed from the outside, without opening the case.

Upper filter fans are deprived. This is though illogical, but, taking into account the cost of the body, a prosperous decision. As for the rear and side fans, they work on the exhaust, and therefore the lack of filters is quite understandable.

We also note that the mesh plugs of 5-inch slots are equipped with foam liners.

Of course, it is possible to install liquid cooling systems. Where without it ...

Of the additional ventilation holes, in addition to the 5.25-inch slots available in the plugs, there are vertical perforated band in the rear wall of the chassis and slots in the plugs of the expansion slots.

Assembling system block

Side covers are attached to a conventional groove system and comb, and fixed with steaming of screws with plastic slot heads. On the rear ends of the covers there are stamped protrusions for capturing with fingers, and it helps it well when removing: the lids are sitting on the spot very tight.

Part of the hex rockets for the motherboard is already installed, but for some reason only four, and five more are included in the kit of the accessories. Scrolls for extension boards will have to be released, having gone away disposable plugs. The plugs are in 4 out of 5 five-year slots, and two of them are fixed with screws, and two need to be broken.

Of course, such shock absorbers to a certain extent will reduce vibrations from disk drives, but there is no heat sink from the chassis cases. True, if there are as many three fans serving the disk basket, it is not so critical.

The discs, as in the Z9, are inserted on the left, but the interface connectors can only look right, where there are not so many places to the side wall, and SATA cables with M-shaped connectors should be used.

2.5-inch drives were already mentioned: one can be installed on the back side of the motherboard substrate, securing the four screws to the existing ears with holes, for the second there is a place on the adapter of a five-linked slot, which can be set or 2.5 -, or 3.5-inch HDD / SSD, or a 3.5-inch device with an output to the front panel.

There is a large window in the motherboard substrate, which will allow you to install or remove the processor cooler without dismantling the board itself. The convex shape of the decorative plastic lining closing the window in the left side wall will allow you to select a processor cooling system with increased dimensions.

Cables from external uSB connectors 2.0 and HD Audio are shielded, connected to the internal system board connector with monolithic connector. But the method of connecting the USB 3.0 connectors is strange: to the external ports of the motherboard. This solution could be welcomed several years ago, when not all system boards had internal 19-pin USB 3.0 connectors, and the external ports of USB 3.0 were not so often, and today it is possible to explain the similar one by either the desire to please the owners of motherboards of past years of release Either the desire to enable the external housing connectors both to USB 2.0 ports and USB 3.0, but not to complete the case with the corresponding adapter.

In the consolation, the manufacturer laid the expansion slot plug with a closed rubber seal with a slot, through which you can output cables from USB 3.0 connectors outward.

The front panel is attached to six plastic latches and removed without much difficulty. The wires going to the button and the indicator located on it are equipped with intermediate connectors, so they will not interfere with the removal of the panel.

The top panel is also attached to latches; It will have to remove it only for some manipulations with fans, but it will have to "overcome" a thick bundle of cables suitable for it.

Naturally, cables can be paved behind a motherboard substrate, for which there are large holes in it. True, the rubber plugs are not provided for them, the developers decided to limit the rolling edges of the holes. Other edges are roles and the collector can be born.

The power supply can also be installed after the motherboard, having its fan up or down. BP is attached directly to the rear panel, without any additional framework, and on the bottom of the case there are protrusions with rubber shock-absorbing linings.

Measuring noise level

Measuring the noise level is carried out in accordance with our technique using the oktava 110a-eco soundsometer in a soundproof room with a typical level of 20 dBA noise. During the measurement, all electrical appliances in the room are disconnected.

With the nutrition of all fans from 5 volts, noise is low and weakly distinguishable in a typical residential room during the daytime. In the case of placement of the housing on the floor or on the end, the noise level will fall somewhat slightly somewhat, and in this case it will be possible to count the cooling system conditionally silent.

When feeding the fans from 7 volts, the noise of the housing cooling system can be estimated as lowered relative to the typical noise level for residential premises during the day, subject to the tabletop location of the case and place the user in the near field from it. In the case of placing the housing on the floor or on the end, the noise level will decrease slightly, and in this case it will be possible to count the cooling system is quite quiet.

When feeding fans from 8.5-10 volts, the noise of the cooling system of the body can be estimated as a mid-media for residential premises during the daytime. With a further increase in the supply voltage of fans, the noise is close approaching the ergonomic border of 40 dBA. Accordingly, under the outdoor arrangement of the case, the noise can be considered the medium-media for residential premises during the daytime, which is confirmed by the measurement results. The registered value of Sham in such conditions was 34 dBAs for the location of the case on both sides of the microphone (and the user).

Due to the fact that from four connectors intended to supply fans, only two can be connected to the system board in order to control the speed of rotation by fans, and the remaining two connectors are connected directly to the power supply without the possibility of any adjustment, from the user of this case Certain inconvenience may occur if desired, reduce the noise level of the standard cooling system relative to the nominal.

The housing has side walls with a small hole in the area, but the ventilation openings of a large area are located on top and front. In this regard, from the front there is no weakening of noise arising in the internal volume of the case. But in the case of emulation of the floor placement with a shift from the central axis, a slight weakening of the noise level is recorded, and on the right side of the body, the weakening is slightly stronger. Nevertheless, it is not worth counting on a significant noise insulating effect.

Acoustic ergonomics of this model is at the average level. For fans of silence, the case is not suitable due to a relatively noisy standard cooling system in the par value and lack of a standard adjustment of all fans. On the other hand, on the background of powerful components with the stock cooling system, the housing will not be soling, from the point of view of noise level, an element requiring speedy optimization or replacement.

Positioning and conclusions

Conclusions for Zalman Z11 enclosures will be about the same as for Z9: the price value and equipment ratio is quite interesting, and the appearance of USB 3.0 ports in the model Z11 Plus is even more interesting. True, the appearance of the corps became more "amateur", and if the modest Z9 is quite suitable for the body for the office or multipurpose home computer (provided that the owner puts up with blue lights or is ready to turn it off with fans), then Z11 clearly claims more. How reasonably - without reasoning on the themes on the subjectivity of the perception of the design, it is difficult to say, therefore, we simply estimate the balance of changes in comparison with Z9 in the price dimension.

The number of fans can be called redundant: the effectiveness of side fans is doubtful, and it is necessary to pay for them in the version Z11, and in the Z11 Plus. Sorry about the absence of the controller to which only two fans can be connected to the Z9 Plus, and the thermometer performing more decorative function, it is unlikely that someone will be, but an increase in the price compared to Z9 Plus is regrettable: minus controller and thermometer, minus One large fan and plus two small, replacing two USB 2.0 ports for 3.0 and the design change has spread into excess $ 12-14 retail prices, which is a lot for the budget corpus. There is, of course, the Z11 version without Plus, which allows you to save $ 8-10, but the price of refusal from the USB ports 3.0 is one of the most useful differences from the model Z9. In addition, the Z11 at the time of writing the review was on average, though little, but more expensive than not only Z9, but also Z9 Plus. Of course, all these arguments are true only at the time of writing a review: perhaps, in the future, the calculation will change somewhat.

The history of this device takes its beginning back in 2012, because it was then its predecessors in the face of Zalman Z11 and Z11 Plus appeared. They had an aggressive design, clearly distinguishing them against the background of other game models. For example, in contrast to precursors that allow you to install video cards up to 290 mm long, the novelty can accommodate a solution with a length of over 400 mm. At the same time, the hull itself became even somewhat more compact. Unlike Zalman Z11 Plus, where the bottom of the front panel decorated the ventilation grille, the novelty received a more strict appearance due to the use of plastic with the "under metal" finish. Thus, practicality was sacrificed design.

But the fence of cool air in front is still carried out with the help of nozzles, which, moreover, play a significant role in attaching the corpus of the aggressive species, while somewhat increasing its width.

120 mm Zalman Za1225CSL fan with blue LED backlit is responsible for supplying air. It is based on sliding bearings (Sleeve Bearing). Power supply to the turntable is supplied with a 3-pin cable, while its power is less than 2 W (12 V at 0.16 A). The speed of rotation of the blades was at the level of 1130 rpm, which is quite a comfortable indicator from the point of view of the noise created.

Also here you can install another 120 mm turntable, and a removable dust filter is responsible for cleaning the injected air.

Despite the very large sizes, the Zalman Z11 NEO body is equipped with only one external compartment for 5.25-inch devices, which effectively opens when shifting the spring-loaded cover down. External compartments for 3.5-inch devices are not available at all.

The back of the novelty has an already familiar layout. The lower location of the power supply, seven expansion slots (with disposable plugs), two holes for hoses and 120 mm turntable - everything is performed in good traditions of gamers' enclosures. But here, the solution from Zalman can be found in a very specific form of the top panel.

The fan on the back panel is represented by a 120 mm Zalman ZA1225CSL model, the originality of which ensures the use of a white impeller. In terms of its characteristics, it is similar to the solution used on the front wall of the case, but is made of opaque plastic and deprived of LED backlight. According to the measurement, it rotated somewhat faster - at the speed of 1330 rpm.

The bottom of the Zalman Z11 NEO body is distinguished by the presence of two dust filters that can be removed for regular cleaning. One of them is designed to clean the air entered inside the power supply through the perforated area of \u200b\u200b10 x 8 cm. The second is useful when installed on the bottom of an additional 140-mm or 120 mm turntable.

When using a long power supply (in our case, a model of 193 mm long), mount the turntable here will no longer work. But pleases the fact that a novelty can accommodate even the most dimensional power sources up to 250 mm.

At the edges of the lower panel plastic legs 20 mm high with a rubber base with a thickness of 3 mm, which prevents the body to prevent the body and scratching the surface to which the system unit is placed.

One of the most interesting innovations is the top panel. It is made of plastic and has an original form inherited from precursors. Closer to the back is a perforated grille and plastic ribs. Closer to the Zalman Z11 front panel, there is a glossy platform designed to accommodate a smartphone or a portable drive. On both sides, the controls and components of the interface panel are located, represented by the reboot button, two pairs of USB ports 3.0 and USB 2.0, as well as two 3.5 mm audio connections.

In the center, directly above the front panel, there is a power button. It has a pleasant blue glow that you can rate a little further in the appropriate subsection.

For fans of modding on the left side panel, there is an acrylic window of 31 x 30.5 cm in size, through which it is convenient to observe the operation of components. Internal organization

The chassis and all metal elements on it are covered with black matte paint, so that they are perfectly merged with plastic details. The internal space is visually divided into the left part intended for installation of the motherboard and power supply, and the right, which contains compartments for drives and other devices.

Two baskets are designed to install the drives, each of which can accommodate three devices. The mounting of 3.5-inch solutions in them is carried out using unrequitable locks, while 2.5-inch media will have to be fixed with complete screws. Baskets themselves do not boast good stiffness (when installing the drive, this feature becomes less noticeable), and when they are fixed, a small backlash is observed.

Therefore, if you are not going to create inside Zalman Z11 NEO file storage, then one or even both baskets can be removed. In this case, you can use metal brackets located in two lower 5.25-inch compartments, which are designed to install 3.5- and 2.5-inch media. However, here to fasten them exclusively with screws.
