On the official website of the Chinese company Qihoo 360 Software, there are two antivirus options: 360 Total Security and 360 Total Security Essential. 360 Total Security has all the features available, and 360 Total Security Essential is missing some functionality: components for cleaning and optimizing the system, additional modules.

Free antivirus 360 Total Security uses several antivirus engines in its work:

  • Cloud scanner 360 Cloud - proactive defense system of our own design
  • QVM AI - its own cloud-based protection system against threats unknown to antivirus
  • Bitdefender - an engine from a well-known Romanian antivirus company

To protect your computer in real time in any situation, for example, without an Internet connection, you must enable one or both anti-virus engines: the Bitdefender engine and the Avira engine. By default, these engines are disabled, you can enable one engine or both engines at once from the program settings. After that, the computer will be maximally protected.

Bitdefender and Avira's antivirus engines are some of the best in the world. With the simultaneous operation of all enabled engines, a greater consumption of computer resources is possible.

Screenshots of 360 Total Security

Two software products are presented - 360 Total Security and 360 Total Security Essential. The difference between them lies in the set of auxiliary modules. For example, 360 Total Security Essential lacks an optimization module, cleaning temporary files, a Wi-Fi security check, and a vulnerability fix module (Patch Up).

The rest of the functions of these antiviruses are the same, namely, in the composition of both software products includes several anti-virus engines - Cloud Scanner 360 (360 Cloud), Avira AntiVir, Bitdefender AntiVir, 360 QVMII AI, Sandbox, Module safe shopping on the Internet, malware protection module, webcam protection and keylogger protection, system protection module. The last module includes checking USB drives when connected, firewall, behavioral blocking, registry protection, file checking when opening and saving, and some other types of runtime protection.

Comparison with competitors

Let's see what 360 Total Security looks like against the competition. Since the product is free, competitors will also be free. However, there are a lot of antiviruses, and it would be problematic to compare the product in question with all existing antiviruses, so Avira Free Antivirus and Avast Free Antivirus were chosen as competitors for 360 Total Security.

The choice of competitors is due to several factors. Firstly, Avira Free Antivirus is considered the best free antivirus of 2015, or so it says on their infographic site. Secondly, 360 Total Security uses the Avira Antivir engine (although, in fact, this is only one of the engines, and only three different antivirus engines are supported, which can work together), so it was interesting to compare 360 Total Security with this particular antivir. As for Avast, it showed very good performance (which is important for an antivirus - it should provide a good level of protection, but not consume a lot of system resources), which was shown in one of the reviews in "Hacker". The table below allows you to evaluate the functions of the compared antiviruses. The table does not display the main functionality (monitor + scanner) - it is clear that any modern antivirus will have it, with the exception of completely cut-down scanner products like CureIt from Dr. Web. The main functions also include protection against malware - malware. The fact is that some antivirus manufacturers single out malware protection as a separate function (for example, 360 Total Security), others consider it part of the scanner (Avira and Avast), others do not mention it at all, but this does not mean that the antivirus cannot deal with this kind of software.

(**) This function not allocated as a separate one, but all modern antiviruses detect keyloggers as malware

Let's see what happens. The first thing that catches your eye is the fact that modern antiviruses are equipped with functionality that has nothing to do with the antivirus scanning and system protection itself. For example, Avira has a price comparison feature that saves you money when shopping online. Antivirus 360 Total Security is equipped with a powerful set of features to optimize and clean up your system. Avast has a built-in password manager.

The most "empty" option is Avast Free Antivirus. Its "kit" includes only the antivirus itself (scanner and monitor), a browser protection function and a password manager. Yes, there is an Avast product Internet Security... There is also protection against phishing, firewall, protection against spam, but only a 30-day version is available for free, and a license for one year will cost 900 rubles for 1 PC or 2350 rubles for 3 years. The same can be said for Avira - if needed additional features then you need to buy either Antivirus Pro (23.95 euros) or Internet Security Suite (30.95 euros). Most full version- Internet Security Suite, it combines all the features of Antivirus Pro plus features for system optimization and file encryption. Separately, the "supplement" will cost 16.95 euros (product of System Speedup). Note that 360 Total Security has all of these features available for free.

So, completely free of charge, 360 Total Security offers cloud protection, firewall, vulnerability fixing (patch-up), system optimization and cleaning, as well as a number of minor nice "gadgets".

Installation process overview

The installation process is so simple that any housewife can handle it. You need to download and run the installer (which, by the way, takes only 29.4 MB - this is a complete set for offline installation), then you can either immediately click the button Installation, or press the button Settings to select the folder for installing the antivirus. No other settings (other than language selection) are offered.

Rice. 1. Installer 360 Total Security

The antivirus includes several antivirus engines, as noted earlier:

  • Avira engine is a powerful engine developed by a German company. Disabled by default.
  • Bitdefender engine is another supported engine developed by Romanian programmers. Disabled by default.
  • Cloud Scanner 360 Cloud- its own cloud-based antivirus engine using information about checksums files. Always on, not separately disabled.
  • QVM AI- our own proactive defense system using cloud technologies. Allows you to protect your system from threats unknown to the antivirus. Always enabled and not disabled separately.
Individual engines can be turned on and off in the program settings, but first these engines need to be downloaded and installed. Fortunately, this process is completely automated. The user only needs to go to the section Antivirus and press the button corresponding to the desired engine. The download and installation process for the Avira AntiVir engine is shown below. You can disable a temporarily unnecessary engine either in the program settings, or using the slider that appears when you move the mouse pointer over the engine button.

Rice. 2. Installing the Avira AntiVir engine

Rice. 3. Slider to enable / disable the anti-virus engine

This is very convenient in practice. In one "bottle" the user receives several antiviruses that can be turned on / off at any convenient time.

Full system scan

In fig. 4 shows the result of a full system scan. The program found two problems - 4 threats related to system optimization and a lot of temporary files (1.4 GB). Then the user can click the button To correct to fix threats, and then click Recheck to re-check. As you can see, the program interface is quite simple and informative.

Rice. 4. Result of a complete system check

A complete system scan includes a search for problems related to system optimization, a search for "garbage", as well as a search for viruses and other malicious programs. The Wi-Fi security check module could not be checked, since the router model I use is for some reason not supported by the program.

Anti-virus scan

If you wish, you can carry out all these checks separately. So, in the section Antivirus(see Fig. 2 and 3) you can perform a quick, complete and custom (for example, check files on a USB flash drive) system checks. The rest of this overview will show you antivirus protection in action. As the saying goes, "don't switch."

Optimizing and cleaning the system

The system optimization module found as many as 22 optimization points in the test freshly installed Windows 10 (Fig. 5). The module offers to disable some scheduled tasks (usually unnecessary such as a software quality improvement program), some unnecessary services (who needs a font buffering service?), And also optimize the network connection. To fix all found problems, click the button Optimize.

Rice. 5. Optimization module

Rice. 6. System optimization completed

The system cleaning module allows you to remove various garbage such as temporary files, browser cache files, system junk, etc. (fig. 7).

Rice. 7. System cleaning module

After cleaning is complete, the program will offer to free up additional disk space using System Backup Cleaner (Fig. 8). If the automatic update of your system is not turned off, this tool can be quite useful, as it allows you to delete unused system update backup files that take up quite a lot of space (Figure 9).

Additional tools

360 Total Security includes the following additional tools:
  • 360 Connect- if you need to remotely configure your grandmother's computer, then this tool will help you. Details in this review it is not considered, but everyone can get acquainted with.
  • Instant installation- allows you to install various popular programs (ICQ, Skype, etc.) with one click
  • Browser protection- allows you to protect the browser from unauthorized changes to the search engine and / or start page (Fig. 12). Unlike the competition, there are no secure browsing or user tracking blocking features.
  • Firewall- The stock Windows firewall is pretty good and will satisfy the needs of most users. If it is not enough, then 360 Total Security offers to install (completely free) GlassWire Firewall. Actually, after starting the tool Firewall you will see a window with a button Install... After installing the firewall, this button will start it.
  • Sandbox- allows you to run dangerous programs, all changes to the system configuration made in the sandbox will not affect the real system in any way. Highly useful function if you are unsure about the app.
  • Vulnerabilities- A useful system vulnerability scanner that allows you to check for security updates and various patches. It is also possible to install / uninstall this or that security update (patch).
  • Cleaning up system backups- this tool has already been demonstrated earlier.
  • Compressing a disk- allows you to free up disk space by compressing system files. On the test machine, the tool suggested compressing 4.7 GB. Remember that shrinking system files is likely to degrade performance, so this should only be used as a last resort (when free space is more important than performance).

Rice. 10. Additional tools

Rice. 11. Instant installation of programs

Rice. 12. Browser protection

Rice. 13. Sandbox

Rice. 14. Security updates

Rice. 15. Compression of system files. You can free up 4.7 GB.

Antivirus performance

Three processes "hang" in the memory, which quite modestly consume both processor time and RAM. Screenshot 16 was taken on a test machine, and on a working laptop on which these lines are written, Firefox browser occupies 530 MB of "RAM", so against its background the total memory consumption of up to 50 MB seems like a drop in the ocean.

Rice. 16. System resources

The test machine is pretty weak - 3GB of RAM and a dual-core mobile Intel 1000M about 1.8 GHz. The operating system is 64-bit Windows 10, as it is planned to upgrade the memory to 8 GB. But even with this configuration, the presence of antivirus does not affect the performance of the system. Special brakes are not felt, and if they are, they are invisible to the user.

A noticeable slowdown is possible only when the antivirus is running in scanner mode and a computer scan is running. But it is unlikely that a user who suspects that his PC is infected (why else then run full scan?) will calmly continue to work at this moment - it will wait for the system check, and close all applications for the duration of the check itself. Even if such a user wants to work, then after starting the scan, you need to wait a little - the consumption of system resources is significantly reduced (Fig. 18).

Rice. 17. Consumption of system resources when scanning a PC at the time of starting the scan

Rice. 18. The check is in full swing. Only 35.1% of CPU time is used, the hard disk is also not overloaded

In some reviews, 360 Total Security is criticized for being quite demanding on system resources antivirus update mechanism. But nothing of the kind was seen on the test machine. In fig. Figure 19 shows that the antivirus update process took only 5.5% of the CPU time.

Rice. 19. Antivirus update process

Real test

Now is the time for the most interesting part of this review - the real test. I have at my disposal a good selection of infected files (both exe and Word documents). Each file from this collection is infected, in total there are 142 files in the collection. Let's see how many viruses 360 Total Security finds. All viruses are detected by other antiviruses like Dr. Web, Kaspersky, etc. For greater fairness, additional engines will be disabled, only standard protection measures will be used.

In order not to infect the system, everything was checked like this: the archive was copied (with a password), then it was unpacked. Immediately after unpacking, the antivirus began to react. The result of its work is shown in Fig. 20 - 92 infected files were found and removed. Then the antivirus recommended running a quick scan, since many malicious programs were found at once (Fig. 21).

Rice. 20. Antivirus results

Rice. 21. Run a quick check?

Let's give the antivirus a second chance. Let's try to check the folder into which the infected files were unpacked by the scanner. The anti-virus found only one more file (a total of 93 files out of 142 were recognized as dangerous).

Rice. 22. Another virus has been found

Now let's turn on both additional engines - Avira and Bitdefender and try again to scan the folder with viruses. Logically, there are still 49 infected files in it. Voila. The antivirus found the remaining 49 viruses (Fig. 23).

Rice. 23. Not a single virus went unnoticed

From this we can conclude that maximum protection is guaranteed when all available engines are enabled. Maybe it will have a slight impact on performance, but there is never enough security. What you need - either fast and not very reliable - or a little slower, but safe - it's up to you.

Rice. 24. “Balance” has been successfully liquidated

Program settings overview

At the end of this review, consider some useful settings programs. Among the main settings of the program, the user can enable / disable active protection at system startup, enable / disable self-protection, and enable / disable automatic update(fig. 25). For security reasons, it is best to leave all of these options enabled. The only parameter that you can disable if you get tired of it is displaying the system boot time after rebooting.

Rice. 25. Basic program settings

The very same active protection settings are stored in the section of the same name. For performance reasons, only executable files and documents are scanned by default, not all files in a row. Therefore, if you copy an archive with viruses into the system (even without a password), the antivirus will not react to it in any way. As it turned out in the section Antivirus(fig. 27), by default the program does not react at all to compressed files... If you want archives to be scanned too, enable the Scan compressed files during full disk check.

Rice. 26. By default, only documents and executable files are scanned

Rice. 27. Antivirus parameters

In the tab Confidentiality you can select the webcam protection mode - in strict mode, the antivirus will inform you about every attempt to access it (Fig. 28).

Rice. 28. Webcam access control

conclusions

360 Total Security is not bad :), and most importantly, a completely free antivirus that provides many additional useful tools. Maximum protection is carried out with the connection of additional antivirus engines Avira and Bitdefender.

Thank you for your attention, I am interested in your opinion in the comments.

Which antivirus to choose - paid or free? Can a free antivirus guarantee a high level of security?

Is there Android support platforms? Not sure which antivirus to choose?

In today's article, we will talk about 360 Total Security Free Antivirus.

Every third Chinese uses Qihoo 360 developments

The developer of the free antivirus 360 Total Security is Qihoo 360, an unknown company for the average user of the Russian Internet, but quite popular in China.

Qihoo 360 was founded in 2005 and, having exchanged the first ten years, was able to emerge and confidently stay in the top suppliers of antivirus products in the Chinese market.

In addition to the antivirus itself, the company has developed its own browser and search engine, which are no less popular among the inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom.

Note! Let's look at the numbers, so at the end of June last year the company's products were used by about 500 (!) Million PC users and 650 million users mobile devices... For comparison, the entire population of the CIS today is 280 million.

The positioning of the antivirus is carried out under the slogan - "Simple but powerful."

In its work, the program uses signature, proactive and cloud technologies, which, together with an innovative approach based on the use of 5 engines - BitDefender, QVM II, cloud and recovery engine 360 Cloud and System Repair, provide online protection for your computer.

Important! 360 Total Security allows you to protect not only data, but also monitor for illegal control and use third party applications computer peripherals: keyboards or webcams.

Antivirus is available in two flavors of Lightweight 360 Total Security Essential and Full 360 Total Security.

Both applications are similar in their ability to detect and prevent viruses.

The differences lie in several basic functions that the 360 Total Security package has: checking the security of a Wi-Fi connection, cleaning temporary files, optimizing the system (working with the Startup menu, application services and system services).

Download, install and first launch

To download the program, you must visit the official Web site (menu "Products" and select the version you want product).

In addition to supporting Windows (in Win XP - Windows 10) and Andorid platforms, the antivirus can be installed on Mac OS X (OS X 10.7 - OS X 10.10).

The antivirus is available for download in two versions - a complete package for offline installation and a small, starter installer like the one used in Skype.

Note! Before installing any antivirus, incl. and 360 Total Security, you should make sure that no other antivirus software is installed on your computer. If two or more antiviruses are installed, the operating system may become unstable.

Installation is trivial - choose a language, get acquainted and agree to the terms of the license agreement and privacy policy.

Whether or not they join the "Software Quality Improvement Program" is up to everyone (we will not), you can also change the standard installation directory by going to the "Settings" item.

After installation, the main menu of the program will open with a proposal to perform a full scan of the computer.

Overview of the main functions

The user can choose from 3 scan modes - selective, full or fast ("Antivirus" menu).

Also being in this menu, you can view / add / remove programs that are in quarantine and whitelist.

Everything is standard here, like most antiviruses. But in addition to these features, the menu contains interesting opportunity- inclusion of two antivirus engines Avira and BitDefender.

To connect, click on the icon the desired antivirus and turn it on with the switch.

With this use, the enabled anti-virus engines will be activated on demand when performing a scan.

In order for them to be used and for active protection, you must click on the shield icon "Protection: on." located in the upper left corner of the program menu, then go to the "Custom" protection mode and enable the desired engine in the "System protection" section.

To check a suspicious program, directory or file, there is no need to go to the antivirus menu and do a random scan - it takes too long.

Use the appropriate item context menu which is available after clicking right click mouse on the desired object.

To do this, go to the "Settings" menu, the "Active protection" submenu, the "Internet" tab, set the "Protection against web threats 360" and select from the list the browsers that are installed on the computer.

It is also useful to mention such interesting features as Sandbox and Vulnerabilities.

The Sandbox feature provides the ability to run programs or applications in an isolated environment to prevent unwanted programs from being installed and then changing system settings.

This function is disabled by default, and after it is enabled in the "Tools" menu, this item will automatically appear in the context menu.

The Vulnerabilities feature allows you to scan your operating system for known vulnerabilities and update to fix them.

This antivirus left behind, perhaps, only positive impressions.

The presence of several engines, a high level of proactive protection, incl. and from viruses-encryptors, minimal load on the operating system, convenient, intuitive interface and absolute free antivirus - these are the factors that keep 360 Total Security in the top antivirus software.
