Lumiya 2520. Different sensors perform different quantitative measurements and convert physical indicators into signals that can be recognized by a mobile device.

There have been rumors about this tablet for a long time, and after information that Nokia will soon become part of Microsoft, the exit this device was questionable. We have repeatedly recalled the first Nokia tablet in the video blog, wondered if it really will be released and whether it will work on Windows 8 RT, which only the lazy has not abandoned. Now that the tablet has visited us, I'm ready to tell you what it is.

Nokia unveiled its first tablet at Nokia World 2013 in Abu Dhabi. At that time, the announcement was more or less obvious, but Windows RT still haunted me. Obviously, the development of the device began a long time ago and it was impossible to change something radically, which is why we saw this OS in the device. However, as it turned out, everything is not so sad. But I'll start with the look.

Like all Nokia devices, the 2520 is sold in the original blue packaging. This box is of high quality, it is pleasant to unpack the tablet. But the most pleasant thing is to take out the tablet itself - it is here that you realize how high-quality the piece is in your hands! Tablets, especially those with a display diagonal of 10 inches or more, often feel fragile and flimsy, only a few can be called truly monolithic. Immediately we got practically perfect build and very attractive design, designed in a common style with other models Nokia Lumia... The case is plastic, several colors are available, I got the red one. Are there many multi-colored tablets on the market today? Basically, they are all restrained, although some, like the new Nexus 7, would really go red, yellow, green colors... In the case of the 2520, you can choose from red, blue, white or black. As is the case with other Nokia models, depending on the color, the plastic will be either glossy or matte. For example, black is matte, and red, like mine, is glossy.

In general, in my opinion, there is already enough dullness in life, bright gadgets at least slightly dilute this fact. By the way, recently I got a yellow case for iPhone - I wanted a bright one. In this, everyone is pleased with the fact that Nokia devices do not resemble any other, they are completely unique.

The case not only feels solid and monolithic, it is. Not back cover, side edging, ribbons and any other nonsense - only one part, into which all the insides are inserted, walled up under a 10.1 ″ screen. I like this design, I see no reason to make tablet cases from different parts, if the case remains non-separable.

The volume and lock keys are located on the upper edge, the MicroUSB and Micro HDMI connectors are on the right, on the lower edge there is a connector for connecting a docking keyboard, and on the left are connectors for a headset and for charger... On the top there are also slots for a memory card and a SIM card. By the way, LTE is supported, it works in Russia. Unfortunately, charging is carried out only through the Nokiev port, despite the fact that MicroUSB is present. It's understandable why this was done: through a non-standard connector, the tablet is charged by 80% in just an hour, it was impossible to achieve this via MicroUSB. But why not leave at least the ability to charge slowly through the universal port?

But let's think about the feasibility of such a device. Obviously Nokia is not positioning it as mobile computer, 2520 is exactly a tablet. Only if desired, its functionality can be expanded with a separately sold keyboard, which costs $ 150 in the United States. This accessory will turn Nokia Lumia 2520 into a kind of laptop - it will become possible to type more conveniently, the cursor can be controlled using a touchpad, and something else can be connected to USB 2.0, for example, a USB flash drive. In addition, the docking keyboard will also recharge the tablet, adding 5 more hours to its 11 hours of operation. The cost of the Nokia Lumia 2520 in the states is $ 500, excluding taxes. And excluding the keyboard. Our price tag is much higher - about $ 700. And that's a lot! For example, it will cost only $ 470, officially and already with us! At the same time, already with a keyboard. Yes, keyboard without battery, but with USB 3.0. ASUS has significant advantages in the form of cost, mentioned USB 3.0 in the bundled keyboard and, most importantly, full-fledged Windows 8.1, which significantly expands the number of stands. On the other hand, Nokia is prettier, with a better display, the best camera and lives longer on a single charge. What do you think, is it worth such an overpayment?

Display

It is made using ClearBlack technology and has Full HD resolution. The pixel density at 10.1 "diagonal is 218 ppi. With 650 nits of brightness, the display should remain readable in direct sunlight. At Nokia World, they generally said that it has the brightest screen among tablets. In fact, the 2520 is easy to operate in sunlight while the display remains informative. Screen covered protective glass Gorill Glass 2. Maximum viewing angles.

Camera

What you shouldn't expect from Nokia is a bad camera in the flagship device. Even if it's a tablet. The main camera in the tablet has Carl Ceiss optics and a 6.7 MP sensor. This is a tablet's strong point, if the camera can be thought of as a place in a tablet at all. However, I myself have seen people taking pictures with tablets. When there is nothing at hand, and you need to shoot a more or less high-quality picture or video, you will be grateful to the developers. The camera application, as is already common in Nokia devices, is advanced. Front-camera- 1.2 MP.

Software and specifications

My opinion, it would be better to have a modified 2520 Windows version Phone, with full support for applications from the mobile OS. Nevertheless, Windows RT is not the most popular solution, developers are unlikely to write software for this OS, and for WP even normal games have begun to appear, there is GTA San andreas even came out. And here both the percentages and the graphics are cool, but why use them? Snapdragon 800, Adreno 330, 2 GB of RAM - everything as it should be for a modern flagship device, but why? For growth? No graphic editors there are no strong nor demanding games for Windows RT, or there are, but very deep, where I did not find them. In fairness, after rummaging around in the app store a little longer, I found there a Trainz train simulator (by the way, it turned out to be a rare UG), a farm simulator and even the Riptide GP of the first and second versions (the latter looks really cool). But, in fact, this is the only game that is more or less demanding on the hardware, but the processor of the previous generation would be enough for it. Designed exclusively for Nokia game Dragons Adventure is also not demanding on hardware, for FullHD video this performance is also not needed.

  • Dimensions: 267 x 168 x 8.9mm.
  • Weight: 615 g.
  • Operating system: Windows 8.1 RT.
  • Processor: Quad-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974), 2.2 GHz.
  • Graphics: Adreno 330.

  • Interface connectors: 3.5mm headphone jack, Micro USB, Micro HDMI.
  • Battery: Li-Pol battery 8120 mAh.

What you can't take away - the tablet works quickly. The main complaints about Surface tablet from Microsoft, which also ran on Windows RT, had a low autonomy and a completely useless work speed. The Lumia 2520 has neither one nor the other problem. Basically, there are basic applications for the OS that I need: Evernote, Dropbox, and a few others. However, the absence Chrome browser upset me Internet Explorer for touchscreens really good (no kidding), but I have been using another ecosystem for a long time, where everything is tied to each other - the Google ecosystem. If you're ready to start from scratch and use Microsoft services, the 2520 can easily suit you.

Conclusion

In the end, I liked the tablet. More precisely, he left behind a pleasant impression. It is of high quality, beautiful and fast. It is as if they came to Nokia and said, "Take Windows RT and make something good out of this," and Nokia did a great job. Made the best of what was. In principle, if you do not find fault, I am sure that such a device could replace a laptop for many: here you have an office and popular applications such as Evernote, but you would have to look for an alternative to Google services. Although you don't have to look far for them - everything can be found at Microsoft. The only question is how much such a device should cost, in view of the presence on the market of such players as ASUS, producing tablets on the full-fledged Windows 8.1 at a much more affordable price. On the other side, good tablet with 3G and 32GB of expandable memory for $ 500 (in the states) - not bad at all. What do you think?

Video review Nokia Lumia 2520

Operating system tablet - sensational Windows RT 8.1... This Windows version for ARM architecture, on which the vast majority of processors for mobile devices are built. Due to the difference between it and the traditional x86 architecture on which processors for laptops and desktops are made (and now, through the efforts of Intel, and for some tablets / smartphones), normal Windows applications will not work here. If you want a tablet with full Windows 8, don't worry - since the new ones are released Intel processors Atom of the Bay Trail family there are enough of them on the market.

Owners of the Lumia 2520 and other Windows RT devices will have to limit themselves to the existing software for the platform. Since most mobile OS app developers prefer to release software for iOS, Android, or as a last resort Windows Phone, the emergence of the fourth (Blackberry and other trifles with an insignificant market share do not count, including Symbian, which ordered to live long) OS didn't make them happy. So that much less software than Android or iPhone / iPad, and its number is unlikely to increase much in the near future, especially given the emergence of x86 tablets on Windows. This situation resembles the exit of one of the last Nokia smartphones on Symbian, N8 - despite new version Symbian, many buyers refused to buy a smartphone, rightly believing that it is unreasonable to invest in a smartphone with an OS that is about to end support. Unfortunately, that's how it turned out - Symbian was completely supplanted by Android, and Nokia itself, at the suggestion of Microsoft, switched to Windows Phone. And here we have another Nokia device running on an OS that is not particularly interesting to developers. Should you buy it?

If you are usually happy with the software pre-installed on new gadgets and rarely look into the app store, then most likely the Lumia 2520 will suit you. Here pre-installed some useful applications (e.g. a touch-optimized version Microsoft Office) , and some programs popular on Android and iOS have a version for Windows RT. It is worth mentioning separately Skype: he is not only here, but they also very nice to use thanks to the excellent microphone and speakers of the tablet. Pre-installed apps from Nokia such as Storyteller, MixRadio(which is free on the Lumia 2520), VideoDirector, and Here Maps... All this is familiar from Nokia smartphones and works as well as possible, but the Camera application made us angry: it often crashed, restarting the device did not help, and as a result, the program had to be reinstalled.

All common tasks- video calling, killing time in in social networks watching movies and listening to music, working with documents, playing games for mobile devices - the tablet is quite capable... Only users who regularly shovel Google play or App Store in search of exotic applications and accustomed to constant updates of existing software and the release of new. We don't expect this from Windows RT.

Note, however, that the overwhelming majority of viruses for "normal" Windows, due to architectural differences (x86 and ARM), simply will not work here - this does not mean that you can forget about all caution and go to any suspicious sites, but any that accidentally penetrated the device dirty tricks like keyloggers and download blockers may simply not start, and this is good news. At the same time, the developers of the similar " software"are not eager to waste time on potentially unnecessary OS, so it is unlikely that in the future the number of viruses for the RT-version of Windows will reach even a quarter of the existing ones for the usual one.

The Lumia 2520 is Nokia's first tablet to feature a 10.1-inch HD display. The gadget runs on Windows RT 8.1. The tablet will ship with Microsoft Office. From the software solutions of the tablet, the cartographic package draws attention Nokia HERE capable of working offline. The tablet works with LTE networks and, traditionally, Wi-Fi. The device is equipped with two cameras (rear with a resolution of 6.7 MP, front by 2 MP). An optional Nokia Power Keyboard with touchpad, five-hour battery backup and two USB ports will be available for the tablet.

New Nokia products presented in Abu Dhabi

Nokia has been on the market for almost twenty years mobile communications, which does not prevent her from still surprising with interesting novelties. Very soon, sales of new Nokia devices will begin in Russia - three models of Asha smartphones, two models of Lumia smartphones with large displays - 1320 and 1520, and Lumia 2520 - the first tablet manufactured by the Finnish company. The announcement of these devices was made in October at the Nokia World conference in Abu Dhabi, specially assembled in such an exotic place to present new developments. Among the devices presented, each buyer can look for the most suitable option for himself: there are both premium-segment devices and budget models.

Lumia 2520- first Windows tablet from Nokia may easily be the last one. When Nokia is ready with the design of the next model, the Finnish company may already become part of Microsoft.
However, now, the Lumia 2520 begins to be sold worldwide under the Nokia brand, and will be a direct competitor Surface 2- the only competitor on the platform Windows RT... Just like the Surface, this is a flagship device with a 1080p screen and a top-end Snapdragon 800 processor.

But while Microsoft sees the Surface as a laptop tablet, the 2520 is a simple tablet. The 2520 doesn't have a kickstand or full-size USB ports (unless you buy an extra cover with an integrated keyboard).
But Nokia has installed the same great camera on the 2520 as on Lumia 720(for tablets this is unprecedented). And also, there is one more thing that the Surface 2-LTE does not have. In fact, you won't even be able to buy the 2520 in the WiFi only version. It looks good enough on paper, but what about in reality? Not bad, it turns out.

Equipment

While the Surface 2 is made of magnesium alloy, the 2520 is made of colored polycarbonate plastic, just like the others. Lumia... Where the Surface 2 has beveled edges and blunt lines, the 2520 is edged except for a few surprisingly sharp corners.

Interestingly, the Surface 2 looks thicker than the Lumia 2520 due to its box shape, but in fact, both of these devices are 0.35 inches thick, at least that's what it says in technical characteristics devices.

Despite the optical illusion, the 2520 is easier to use in tablet mode, at least in most cases. Of course it helps that the 2520 is lighter (1.36 pounds versus 1.49).
At the same time, the minimalistic design of the tablet doesn't do it well. Although the edged corners are rounded, they are too sharp and gnaw into the palm of your hand. Also, the same design trick is used here as in the Lumia 1520 - the sides of the device are sharp and do not give a normal grip.
The back is also more slippery, and even the Surface 2, which is smoother, feels more friction than the 2520.

Now, I would like to clarify which color you should choose, the 2520 has two types of finishes: either glossy (red, white) or matte (white and blue models). I tested the red version and found it to be more slippery than the matte models. Fingerprints adhere very well to such a coating. I'd love to try both, but considering my previous review of the 1520, the matte finish seems to be easier to clean and more comfortable to hold.

Optional keyboard

I had the chance to test out the keyboard, which is sold separately for $ 149.

A few words about the design: it is made of black, soft-touch material, a nice contrast to the plastic of the tablet. Although the plastic is soft to the touch, there are no fingerprints on it.
What I like the most is how firmly the pad is magnetically attached to the base of the tablet.
When they are connected, you will have to exert enough force to unhook the tablet from the keyboard, and when you cover the screen with the lid, it also magnetises nicely to the base of the tablet.

Also, a nice design feature is that all sides of the tablet remain open, so you won't have problems connecting headphones or other wires. The USB ports are located at the back, at the base of the stand, not the most convenient place, but you can hide the cables.

Well, how is text typed on the keyboard? Better than without her. With the exception of the large keys (enter, backspace), all buttons are small, square in shape. It is very rare to make a typo.
It is certainly inconvenient to type "War and Peace" on it, but for replies to emails and search queries quite enough.

The problem with the keyboard pad is that it can be difficult to hold the tablet in your lap. The weight is unevenly distributed, and the entire structure can easily screw back.

Also, the screen is fixed in one position, the device, of course, has good viewing angles, but even with them, the design does not look very good.
Sadly, Nokia made the same mistake Microsoft did with its first Surface.

Design-wise, the 2520 is simple big phone Lumia.
It has a 1,920 x 1,080 IPS display (just like the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2), but the screen is slightly smaller (10.1 versus 10.6 inches) with a higher pixel density (218 PPI).

Of course, density is not the main thing, the main thing is how the picture looks. Here the screen just shines, the brightness and color accuracy are amazing. It is 265nitt brighter than the Surface 2's screen (665 versus 400), and Nokia itself, dubbed the screen “5 percent reflector,” should be perfect for indoor and outdoor use.

In addition, the screen uses technology ClearBlack which makes blacks deep and whites bright. The colors are also very colorful, but not oversaturated. If you put the 2520 next to the Surface 2, the difference is huge, even striking. Before meeting with 2502, I did not know that Surface 2 has a faded screen, now I do not want to return to it.

As for durability, Nokia covered the screen of its device Gorilla Glass 2... And to be honest, when I put the tablet in my bag with other things on the display, I could not find a single scratch, but a few marks appeared on the plastic.

Software

In addition to all the new apps included with Windows RT 8.1 (Bing Food & Drink, Reading List and so on), Nokia has also added a couple of its apps.
Here you will find: Nokia Camera(description will be below), Nokia Storyteller(heaped up album with photos), Nokia Music app(yes it is called that way, although it was renamed to Mix Radio), as well as Nokia Video Director, which allows you to select clips from your device and substitute music for them. This is certainly not Final Cut Pro, but the application is very easy to use, which is what you need for a device with a touchscreen.

At the bottom of the list: Here Maps- downloadable offline maps and My Nokia where you can register your device, sync files and use live chat.

Camera

The 2520 has a 6.7 megapixel BSI sensor, a Carl Zeiss lens with an f / 1.9 aperture.
After you release the shutter, you have to wait a second while the photo is processed, this can be a problem if you are photographing a moving subject.
On the other hand, the camera is excellent in macro shots, which is rare for tablets.
Colors are also reasonably accurate in natural light and also in fluorescent light.

In the dark, I had to use manual focus from touch, but after my prompting, the camera quickly adjusted the sharpness. Despite all this, the photos are sharp enough without the flash.

By the way, about photo applications, it should be noted the differences between the standard app from Microsoft and from Nokia applications... Although the Finnish program does not have a panoramic mode, I would advise using it because of the focus on touch, also remember that Microsoft's application allows you to take a picture by touching the screen, and in Nokia's application you have to press the shutter button.

However, there are not so many settings in Nokia Camera. You can change the aspect ratio from 16: 9 to 4: 3 and that's pretty much it.
In other words, you won't be able to enjoy the ISO, exposure and white balance settings in the Microsoft app, so the camera experience is different from the Lumia 720.
However, the application works well in auto mode, which means that you can easily get great shots without any settings.

The video mode does not look very good, as it does at 720. The 720p / 30fps test clip showed balanced colors, but the image often loses sharpness due to loss of focus. There is no image stabilization and the picture shakes noticeably. The sound is also not very good, in part due to the fact that it does not remove the noise of the wind.

Like new Lumia 1520, 2520 works on the latest processor from Qualcomm - a quad-core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 dual with a quad-core Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM.
Until recently, 800 was installed only on Android devices The Lumia 1520 was the first Windows phone with this processor inside. Accordingly, 2520 is the first not Android tablet with such a processor inside. Which serves as proof that 800 can move Android and Windows RT and Windows Phone without any problems.

Programs start quickly and navigation is smooth and laggy. Sometimes, when I poked an object with one finger, the tablet did not respond, but this is an exception to the rule and in the vast majority of cases there is no such problem.

When used outdoors, the GPS instantly found me and placed me on the map exactly where I was standing.

I have not had any problems with the Internet signal, but if you are near several tall buildings, the signal level may drop noticeably. Web pages will load, but with more pause between links.

When surfing the web, the 2520 performed slightly worse than the Surface 2, with the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark hitting 508.4ms (less is better). But this is still a good result.

Don't believe Nokia's battery stories, although an 8,000mAh battery is prescribed for 8 to 10 hours of use, the 2520 lasted 13.5 hours in the video test (on WiFi connection and 50% screen brightness). That's one hour less than the Surface 2 (which has a less bright screen), but isn't 13.5 hours short? No, this is more than enough and one hour is not very powerful. Once you run out of energy, the tablet will charge up to 80% in an hour. Also, it should be noted that a separate battery for five hours is also built into the lid.

Price and equipment

Funnily enough, Nokia has no plans to release WiFi-only version 2520 yet. This means that if you want to buy it, you buy the LTE version. The tablet is priced at $ 499 with 32GB of onboard storage, which for the price puts it well below 32GB. iPad Air with LTE ($ 729).
However, WiFi-only would not be a bad thing, given that the keyboard cover costs an additional $ 149.

Competitors

  • The Surface 2 is cheaper ($ 449 for 32GB), but you're losing LTE, which you get with the 2520 anyway.
  • Surface 2 is slightly heavier, but slightly more comfortable. Like the Surface 2 laptop wins with its comfortable and large keyboard and the dual-mount kickstand.
  • Battery life is more or less the same, and the 2520's ClearBlack screen easily beats the Surface 2.
The choice is tricky, both tablets are great products. If you are going to frequently type on your tablet, then you should go towards Surface 2, in any other, take the 2520.

Conclusion

Considering that the Lumia 2520 is Nokia's first Windows tablet, the company has launched a very strong product.
The tablet is very light and comfortable enough, and the 665-nit display gives an incredible picture. Add long uptime, quality camera, good price and you will know that Nokia has done a great job.

However, not everything is perfect: a cheaper WiFi-only version would have come in handy.
The polycarbonate lid, while beautiful, leaves marks too easily.

The worst of all is with typing. While the extra keyboard cover is nice, it is not at all comfortable to work on your lap, if you're looking for a tablet for the occasional laptop replacement, you'll be much more comfortable with the Surface 2.
But if you're going to use the 2520 as a tablet, it's a great choice.

Attention! It is a translation

The device is impressive right from the start. The tablet looks very interesting out of the box, and its body convinces that we are holding just another Nokia Lumia.

After the launch of Nokia Lumia 2520 - the tablet pleases. The screen makes a good impression - Nokia used a 10.1-inch ClearBlack display with a 16: 9 aspect ratio and a Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. The manufacturer has given it a very good backlighting of the screen, the brightness is 650 nits, which affects the high definition of the image, also when working outdoors, in good sunlight.

Frame

The body is made of a single piece of plastic, and resembles those used in smartphones of the Lumia family. Back element made of red plastic. With the red color of the tablet body, various black elements are very well combined. On the back is the camera and a small microphone hole. Also a black emblem with the manufacturer's logo. There is an NFC sensor on the back panel.

Holding the tablet in horizontal position, there are several elements on the top. On the left side there is a drawer for micro-sim and micro SD cards. On the right side of the top edge there are buttons for locking the screen and adjusting the volume.

There are two connectors on the right side of the case. Above is a typical headphone jack, and at the bottom there is a place for connecting a power supply, the power supply itself is quite large, and the type of connector used looks like an author's decision of the manufacturer.

On the left side, in a thin black frame, there are HDMI D (micro) and Micro-USB-AB connectors.

On the lower edge, in the middle, there are two rows of circular contacts. They are used to connect the tablet to a physical keyboard, which also acts as a case and an additional battery, and can extend the operating time by 50% - the tablet battery has a capacity of 8120 mAh.
We connect the keyboard by placing the Lumii 2520 in the socket and plastic fasteners, a flexible holder. Thus, we expand the tablet for comfortable work with a full-featured keyboard with touchpad, and we also get two USB ports (on the back) and a battery that will give an additional 5 hours of operation.

The keyboard, which is both an additional battery and a case for the tablet, is very comfortable and functional.

Operating system

Windows RT is a great tablet system that has a very intuitive and easy to use touch interface. The apps available in the store are also touch-friendly.

As a disadvantage in the Nokia Lumii 2520, the desktop mode is noted, which appears, for example, when you start Outlook or other items from Office suite... This is because Microsoft has not prepared a touch version of Office for Windows 8 devices.

Microsoft Office?

The desktop offers us programs like Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Onenote. It doesn't look very good, because the desktop interface is designed taking into account traditional computers, which, as a rule, have large screens than 10.1-inch tablets. On the Nokia Lumia 2520, the desktop interface is very small. In addition, most of the applications available on the Nokia Lumia 2520 are conveniently operated with a touch, and in the case of Office, computer mouse, is a necessary accessory.

So full version Office, which should make this tablet stand out, unfortunately falls short of expectations.

But while Office on the Lumii 2520 doesn’t look the way we would like it, it works quite efficiently. Quickly configurable, documents are stored locally and can be sent directly to the cloud.

Outcome

The Nokia Lumia 2520 works great and looks even better. A good case, which simultaneously acts as a keyboard and a battery, intelligently complements the tablet itself.

The Nokia Lumia 2520 is a great Windows tablet.
