Wi-Fi does not turn on in the smartphone. Wifi not working on laptop. What to do? Turn off wifi on laptop how to turn it on

How many articles I have already written about solving various problems with a Wi-Fi network in Windows 10, and a few days ago I myself encountered such a problem. Now I'll tell you everything in detail. Perhaps someone will need my information. And maybe we will be able to collect new and working solutions in the comments.

I had a problem where I simply could not turn on the Wi-Fi network. The driver is installed, everything seems to be working, but the wireless network is disabled. How to turn it on is not clear. But I solved the problem. How exactly, I did not understand. In any case, I have something to tell you.

I bought an inexpensive Lenovo laptop for work. I installed Windows 10 on it. As usual, I went into the device manager and saw that there were a lot of unknown devices. The drivers were not installed automatically, including the Wi-Fi module. It's like normal.

I went to the official website, found a page with drivers for my laptop model. I downloaded the main drivers and started installing. Installed the WLAN driver (Wireless LAN, aka Wi-Fi). Everything installed without problems. The Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 appears in Device Manager. Great. Rebooted the laptop, and realized that the Wi-Fi was not working.

The problem is the following: the icon on the notification panel in the form of a wireless network with a red cross. I click on it, there is an inscription "Wireless - Disabled". The "Wi-Fi" button is active. I click on it and nothing happens.

I press a few more times - the button becomes inactive.

Good. I went into the settings, in the "Network and Internet" section. There is a Wi-Fi tab. The network is down there. I press the switch - it comes back! I press a couple more times - it freezes (as if turned on). But nothing happens.

I open the "Network Connections" folder, there, near the "Wireless Network" adapter, the status is "No connection".

I go into the device manager, but everything is in order there. There is a wireless adapter, and in the properties it says that it works fine.

Run Windows Network Diagnostics (by right-clicking on the connection icon in the notification bar) and I see the message: "Turn on wireless". With description:

To enable wireless communication on your computer, use the switch on the front or side of your computer, or use the function keys.

I click "Check if the problem is fixed" and I get the following result: Wireless is disabled - Not fixed (see details in the article).

Well, actually everything. Wi-Fi does not turn on, the laptop does not see available networks and nothing works.

Why can't I turn on Wi-Fi on my laptop and how to solve the problem?

It turns out that the problem is that Windows 10 for some reason "thinks" that the Wi-Fi module is disabled. This is reported after troubleshooting is completed. But it's on and working fine.

How I solved my problem: poked the F7 button. On a Lenovo laptop, it is responsible for enabling Airplane Mode. But it didn't work. Restarted the installation of the Wi-Fi adapter driver, replaced the driver from the list of already installed ones. I found three suitable drivers. Then I downloaded and installed some additional utility for my laptop model. I also installed the power management driver. All from the official website of the laptop manufacturer.

But Wi-Fi never worked. I decided to restart the laptop and after reboot everything worked. The laptop saw available Wi-Fi networks and connected to my home network without any problems. Therefore, it is difficult for me to say what exactly solved the problem. I think that the installation of a utility that seems to be responsible for the function keys helped. But maybe I'm wrong.

A few tips:

  • Reboot your laptop.
  • Check if the WLAN autoconfiguration service is running according to the instructions.
  • Try to restart the installation of the Wi-Fi adapter driver and reboot after installation.
  • See if your laptop has a separate Wi-Fi switch. On newer models, function keys are used for this task. For example, FN + F2, F7, etc. It all depends on the laptop. The function key should have an image of a wireless network, or an airplane (airplane mode).
  • Install all drivers for your laptop model from the official website. See also Utilities. Especially the utility that is responsible for the operation of the function keys. Something like Utility for Windows 10, System Interface Foundation for Windows 10, Energy Management, Hotkey Features Integration, ATKPackage.
  • Try to replace the driver according to the instructions.
  • Remove the Wi-Fi adapter from the device manager and restart the laptop.

Solution via Windows 10 Mobility Center

Update: Another solution was suggested in the comments. When I wrote about solving a similar problem in Windows 7, I described there a way in which you could start wireless communication through the Windows Mobility Center. To be honest, I thought that this mobility center was removed in Windows 10. But no. As it turned out, it can be found and run through the search.

We launch. There should be a "Wireless" setting. And the message: "Wireless is disabled". Just click on the "Enable..." button.

Everything must work. I checked everything on my computer. I have the mobility center, but there is no Wi-Fi setting. I don't know, maybe it depends on the update. In any case, this information will not be superfluous. Maybe someone will come in handy.

Be sure to write in the comments if you managed to turn on Wi-Fi. What helped and how did you solve this problem. You can also describe your case if it is somehow different from what I had.

The Wi-Fi network does not work on a laptop because:

  • Banal reasons (provider, food, distance)
  • Router not working or not configured
  • Problems with laptop WiFi module
  • Not installed or bad network card drivers
  • Numerous nuances with setting up Wi-Fi under Windows

This is what we will deal with in this article. Most problems can be solved on your own, and if you read to the end, you can fix 99% of the reasons 🙂 There I also recorded a video where some points are clearly visible.

Who is to blame: router or laptop?

In general, the source of the problem can be either a router or a laptop. The easiest way to find out is to connect to the Internet from another device, such as a smartphone, tablet or other laptop. If it doesn’t connect via Wi-Fi (), then everything is clear - we will dig in the direction of the router. If it works on the phone, but not on the laptop, then the reason is in the laptop, but there may simply be inappropriate router settings.

Simple reasons

No matter how clear it is to everyone, but in practice it turns out that not everyone thinks about banal reasons.

If suddenly stopped working due to a laptop

First of all, check if the Wi-Fi module is enabled. Many laptops have a special light with a wireless sign:

Accordingly, if the light is off or glows red, then look for the Wi-Fi module switch somewhere on the case:

It can be on the front or sidebar, but on modern devices it's just a keyboard shortcut, like this:

For reference, from the standard combinations are known:

  • Acer: Fn+F3
  • Asus, Dell or Gigabyte: Fn+F2
  • Fujitsu: Fn+F5
  • HP: Fn+F12

Well, it is, in general, since it depends on the model, just look for the same drawn icon on the keyboard.

From a simple one, it also helps to restart Windows or.

If Wi-Fi is not working due to a router

Check if the router is working. Maybe somewhere the traffic jams were knocked out or the light was turned off and it stupidly does not work. Or the power supply has moved away from the outlet (to smoke :)), the cat has touched it, it doesn’t matter. If it works, then: turn it off, wait 10 seconds and turn it on again. After 2-3 minutes, when the router boots up, check if WiFi is working on your computer / laptop.

If it worked after a reboot, but you have to do it several times a day, then most likely you need to look for a new router. Less often, the reason is in the provider or its settings. It is better to call first and ask why this is happening to you, name the router model. Maybe he will advise with which their network will work best.

Make sure that the services of the Internet provider are extended. You can simply call or try to enter your personal account on the supplier's website. If that's the only problem, then their site will load. Of course, you need to bookmark this address.

Wi-Fi will not work if you are far away from the router. 10 meters is enough for problems to start. That is if there are walls. And if not, then 15-20 meters can be decisive for most routers and laptops. The quality of wireless network reception can be assessed by the icon next to the watch:

The real reasons for not working WiFi on a laptop

WiFi does not want to work only on a laptop

We look at the network icon near the watch. If it's a red cross:

means the Wi-Fi module is disabled. Right-click on the icon and select "Network and Sharing Center"

We find the connection "Wireless network". It may be called differently, but the distinguishing feature of the wireless network icon is the signal strength bars. Turn on the connection with the right button:

WiFi network does not turn on

It may be that for some time the message "Obtaining an IP address" hangs and then the error "Windows could not connect to ...". Probably, the way to get the IP address is not specified correctly. Let's try the following:

Right click on connect Wireless -> IP version 4 (TCP/IPv4)»

If some numbers are written in the window, then it is better to rewrite them somewhere, they will suddenly come in handy, and put everything on automatic:

Try to reconnect. Still can't see wifi? Then we write the following settings:

We try 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.1.2 in the IP address, and 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway, respectively, should work in one of the options.

No wireless network at all

Most likely the Wi-Fi module driver is not installed. Need . In Windows 10, simply right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager. Here we are carefully looking for problematic devices:

If you observe a similar picture, i.e. many devices with exclamation marks, it means that you recently reinstalled Windows and did not install any drivers at all. So not only will Wi-Fi not work for you, but in general half of everything will not flicker.

All drivers need to be installed. If there is a driver disk from the seller, then insert it and agree with everything that the wizard offers. If not, then you need to read the article about automatic.

If the picture is simpler, with exclamation marks only "Network controller" and / or "Ethernet controller", then we go to the laptop manufacturer's website, section " Support -> Downloads -> Software & Drivers”, this is approximately, variations are possible. You need to find the model of your laptop, it is written on the back cover. Next, we climb into the driver download section, select our operating system and its bit depth ().

Among all the drivers you need to find something with the words "Wireless LAN"

Download and install. The most popular manufacturers of Wi-Fi chips: Broadcom, Intel, Realtek, Atheros. You can find drivers for several manufacturers for your laptop. It's just that different chips can be put into different revisions. How do you know which one you need? The easiest way is to try them one by one, but in general, using the AIDA64 program, you can see in the section " Network -> PCI / PnP Network":

The screenshot shows that the Wireless (wireless) network card is Broadcom, and under the cable (Ethernet) is Realtek.

For some Lenovo laptops

If you are a “happy” owner of one of Lenovo devices with Broadcom network installed, then I know that in Windows 8/10 you have serious problems with WiFi: the Internet works for a while, then the connection falls off, you have to reconnect and so on all the time. There is only one way out, but it is: install the version driver 5.100.245.200 .

To change the driver, go to the device manager, right-click on Broadcom -> Update driver:

In the next window, uncheck "Only compatible devices" and click "Install from disk"

But at this step, you need to specify the path to the folder with the unzipped file. We ignore warnings that the driver is not suitable, we agree with everything. If after the actions taken it only got worse, then just go to the Broadcom properties in the task manager and do " Driver -> Roll Back Driver...»

What if the network card is not in Device Manager

It may be that there is no network card even with an exclamation point in the list of devices. This means that the Wi-Fi module popped out of the connector or burned out. You can fix it if you disassemble the laptop a little. Here you can already see recommendations for a specific laptop, I recommend it on YouTube.

Everything works, but the list of networks is empty

In this case, the switch, which I wrote about at the very beginning of the article, can be turned off. But it can also easily be that someone forgot to connect the antenna to the wifi module. Maybe when it was cleaned of dust, or something was changed, in short, you need to disassemble and connect the antennas. Also try updating the driver to the latest one.

Disappears after waking up from sleep mode

In device manager, go to the properties of the wireless adapter on the "Power Management" tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Incomprehensible glitches, does not connect to Wi-Fi

Perhaps the network settings on the router have changed, and the created Wi-Fi profile is old. You need to delete it and re-find the network. On Windows 10:

Go to "Network Settings"

Click "Manage Known Networks"

To delete a profile "forget" the network

Then we connect to WiFi as for the first time. For any version of Windows, this method also helps to remove the profile:

  1. In the search menu "Start" type "cmd", run it with the right click "Run as administrator"
  2. On the command line (in a black window) we write:

netsh wlan delete profile name=”Profile name from list of networks”

Resetting the TCP/IP stack

The method can help if sites do not open well:

  1. On the command line we write:

netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.log

  1. We reboot the laptop.

Disable TCP/IP autoconfiguration in Windows 10

Innovations in the ten, designed to optimize the use of the network, in many cases leads to frequent Wi-Fi failures. Try to disable and reboot. To do this, on the command line, enter the following commands one by one:

netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled

After each command, you should see confirmation of the successful execution of "Ok". Reboot, check if everything works as it should.

What to do if the Wi-Fi module burned out or is constantly buggy

Sometimes nothing helps, even if you crack! In this case, the most correct decision is to buy a USB Wi-Fi module (“whistle”).

Changing the built-in network is more difficult and expensive. USB "whistles" work fine, almost at the same speeds. And for the notorious Broadcom in Lenovo, even the cheapest $4 Realtek RTL8188CU module works 1.5-2 times faster and more stable!

Problems with the router

There are two options here:

There is a connection, but no access to the Internet

This is when such a wifi icon:

This means that wifi is connected and working, but the network is only between the laptop and the router. Those. The router is not configured or does not have access to the Internet. Look at the front of the router, is the WAN light on/blinking? If not, then the problem is with the cable from the provider, you need to call them. If the light is on, then you need to go to the admin panel of the router and set up Internet access under the provider. How to enter the admin panel is in.

I’ll make a reservation right away that all Internet providers have their own ways of organizing access. Ideally, you need to find a contract in which everything is spelled out. Or call tech support.

The bottom line is this: in the admin panel, you need to go to the WAN section and make settings there from the leaf. On the example of a TP-Link router, it looks like this:

And since we are here, we will immediately solve problems when sites do not open, but Skype works and the Wi-Fi icon shows that everything, like, works. Check the box "Use These DNS Servers" and enter in the fields:

8.8.8.8

77.88.8.8

These are the public DNS servers of Google and Yandex, respectively. Or:

1.1.1.1

1.0.0.1

These will be the new faster DNS from CloudFlare. We do this because the DNS (name servers) of providers fail very often, as a result, the Internet seems to be there, but browsers do not understand site names and do not see them.

Also, if the sites are very slow, the download is intermittent, then in the WAN sections, look at the “MTU Size” parameter. If the connection type is "Dynamic IP" or "Static IP", then the value should be 1500. For L2TP: 1460, PPPoE: 1420. If you have a network via a 3G modem, then set MTU 1476. This is a fine network setting, and if the connection if it doesn’t get stable, then you need to call the provider and ask which MTU you need to use.

Another situation could arise if you were previously connected by cable directly, and then installed a router. Many ISPs record your MAC address the first time you connect, so that no one but you can use your internet. The computer and the router have their own unique poppy addresses. And it turns out that your router for the provider turns out to be a stranger.

You need to assign the same mac to the router as the network card of the computer. To do this, in the admin panel, we find the “Network -> MAC Clone” section and click the “Clone MAC Address” button, save, reboot.

Wi-Fi not working well, disconnecting

If everything worked, and then abruptly stopped, or everything is loaded for a very long time and with breaks, then it is very likely that the radio channel that the router uses is clogged. You need to go to the admin panel in the "Wireless" settings section and see what the channel costs:

Should be "Auto". If it does not help, then you can try to select any numbers from the drop-down list. A couple of attempts are enough to understand that this is not the case.

If it does not connect to Wi-Fi at all or writes “Status Limited”, then there you need to select the mixed mode of operation “11bgn mixed”. It can be called differently, the key here is the letter "bgn". This means three standards of wifi networks. "B" is the oldest and slowest, "G" - up to 54 Mbps, "N" - the most popular today. But you will have to go to the router from another device, because it does not work from a laptop. Or just reset it to default.

Also, poor and slow communication may be due to the power plan in Windows. With certain settings, the gentle mode of operation of the adapter can be turned on. You need to change here:

If nothing helped

What else, sometimes it helps to set the same time zone in the router settings as set in Windows:

Enabling "FIPS" compatibility mode may also help. To enable go to " Network and Sharing Center -> Wireless Network -> Wireless Network Properties -> Security -> Advanced Options»

And in the next window, turn on the checkbox for the compatibility mode with the FIPS standard.

It does not hurt to disable your antivirus, especially DrWeb, which can block the network.

Before you throw your laptop out the window, try using the built-in troubleshooting wizard in Windows, which offers its services for every error. Strange, but they say that sometimes it helps 🙂

The presence of Wi-Fi allows you to use the Internet in a variety of places. But before you can, comfortably sitting in a cafe or on a park bench, plunge into the world of the Internet, you need to deal with your laptop and find how and where to turn on the network on your laptop.

How to turn on the wireless network on a laptop?

There is nothing complicated about turning on wireless on a laptop. You just need to know the function keys to enable wireless communication on your brand laptop, because each manufacturer plays key combinations in its own way. For those trying to understand:

  • how to turn on wireless on an Asus laptop, you just need to press Fn and F2;
  • the wireless button on an HP laptop is a combination of Fn and F12 or a touch button with an antenna pattern on models where it is available;
  • on Lenovo, press Fn and F5 or a special switch, which is indicated in the instructions;
  • Acer and Packard bell turn on the network with a combination of Fn and F3;
  • on different Samsung models, this is either Fn and F9 or Fn and F12.

If the standard combinations are not suitable (another one may be introduced in new models), then attention should be paid to the instructions from the manufacturer, which must indicate all the necessary information related to the functionality of the laptop. In any case, it should be the Fn button, and in its absence, a special button with an antenna pattern or a switch is pressed.

Enabling wireless communication on a laptop in other ways

If a switch is not marked on the keyboard, it can be placed on the side panel or the bottom of the laptop. The buttons located on the bottom are made inconspicuous, so you need to pay special attention to find it there. If neither the combination nor the switch could turn on the wireless network, then most likely the Wi-Fi is simply not configured, and it's time to do it.

How to enable the wireless network adapter?

Any setup begins with checking for the presence of the necessary drivers, which are connected if they are, but not connected, and are first downloaded and installed, and then connected if they are not in the laptop. You can check the drivers through the "Control Panel", the menu item "Device Manager". If this subsection is not immediately visible, then it may be located in the Hardware and Sound section.

From the "Dispatcher" you need to go to "Network Adapters" and find the Wireless section there, which is what you need. It may be that there is no inscription, or it is marked with an exclamation mark. This is direct evidence of problems with drivers that will have to be installed first. They must be present on the disk that came with the laptop. If the disk is lost or for some reason the installation fails, you can search for them on the manufacturer's website.

If there are drivers, but marked with an exclamation mark, then you need to right-click on this icon and select the appropriate item in the menu that appears. Usually it is the phrase "Engage". You may need to turn it on additionally if the adapter is connected to the power saving mode.

You can eliminate the savings factor in the Windows 7 menu in the "Properties" section, where there should be a "Power Management" subsection. It has a checkmark on the item "Allow shutdown to save."

After unchecking the box, the drivers will work, and the connection can be made by standard keystrokes. If the above manipulations did not bring results, the laptop should be shown to a specialist - it may be damaged.

Owners of mobile phones and tablets may encounter a situation where, without any action on their part, wireless Internet access is activated. If Wi-Fi on Android turned on itself, this can lead to a quick discharge of the phone. However, many users do not want to constantly see a notification that Wi-Fi networks were not found. In order to solve such a problem, it is necessary to identify its causes. We recommend that you configure the Wi-Fi settings on Android so that it is active only when it is required by the user of the mobile device. For example, you can set the settings to search for access points automatically at a set time. It is worth noting that there may be several reasons for spontaneous switching on - from gadget settings to Android malfunctions. In some cases, the error may occur in certain phone models. In any case, it requires elimination, only then the operation of the mobile device will be stable and debugged.

If the device automatically activates the wireless network, then you need to look for the reasons for these actions

Troubleshooting

If Wi-Fi turns on automatically, you can check the status of the power saving mode. If it is active, then the wireless connection on Android can turn on and off without the owner's intervention, so try deactivating the mode and watch how the smartphone or tablet "behaves". If this does not help and Wi-Fi continues to turn on by itself, then try turning off and on your mobile device again. Sometimes this helps solve the problem.

It must be understood that the wireless Internet connection module is turned on by the commands of certain programs, that is, the applications themselves can activate it. It is necessary to analyze from what moment a similar problem began to arise on your Android gadget. You may have installed an application that automatically launches the wireless module. In this case, we recommend uninstalling it. Unfortunately, not all programs found in the Google Play store are safe for smartphones and tablets.

You can install a high-quality and effective antivirus, and check the operating system. If this also did not help, then you should do a hard reset, that is, restoring the factory settings of the phone or tablet. There are several ways to perform a Hard Reset - through Recovery mode, Android settings, or using operating system service codes. Before doing this, we recommend that you save only contacts and media files. The rest of the information may contain program code that causes the permanent activation of wireless access.

If the described methods did not help and Wi-Fi constantly turns on by itself, then it is better to contact a service center where qualified specialists will determine the exact cause of such an error. It is advisable to find a certified service that repairs phones and tablets of your brand.

WiFi management app

You can find and install the Smart WiFi Toggler app for free on the Google Play Store. It will allow you to set up wireless Internet access. The bottom line is that the program remembers access points and automatically activates them at a convenient moment. When the user leaves the access point, the mobile Internet is turned on, provided that the user has set such parameters. You can set up home and work access points. Of course, Smart WiFi Toggler turns off the wireless connection when the mobile device is outside the range of configured access points. You can also set up auto-connection and set individual parameters that will provide longer battery life.

The problem in which Wi-Fi on Android turns on by itself is quite common. It can be solved by uninstalling some applications, installing an antivirus on a mobile device, or returning the gadget to factory settings. In addition to solving the main problem, such actions can fix many other errors and free up memory. As a result, the autonomy of a smartphone or tablet based on the Android operating system will improve.
