Channel mixer translation in Photoshop. Using the 'Channel Mixer' command in Photoshop. Select - Selection

What is the purpose of the Channel Mixer and how does it work? (channel mixer) in Photoshop? As the name suggests, this tool mixes channels. Let me explain what this means with an example.

Select "Channel Mixer" from the menu (Figure 1).

(Figure 1) Photoshop CS5 Menu

The following window appears:

(Figure 2) "channel mixer" dialog for three channels

Figure 2 shows that by default each channel contains 100% of itself and 0% of other channels.

Now about how the Channel Mixer tool works. As the Output Channel, select Red, which means that the actions that we will perform will be reflected in the Red channel. Further, by moving the sliders, we either add another channel to the selected channel, or subtract. For example, we leave the Red channel engine at 100%, move Green by +10%, Blue by -20%. This means that we added 10% of the Green channel to the original Red channel and subtracted 20% of the Blue channel, and we got a new Red channel.

Here's a more illustrative example:
Output Channel Red - make Red (-100%) Green (+ 100%)
Output Channel Green - make Red (+ 100%) Green (-100%)
thus we swapped the two channels Red and Green.

And what is it for?

How can you use the Channel Mixer in practice?

Here are a couple of thoughts.

You can use the Channel Mixer. Or, for example, we have a CMYK photo with people, on which the flesh tones are a little reddish, using the Channel Mixer, you can weaken the Magenta channel a little and subtract a little from the Yellow channel from it, and, on the contrary, add a little Magenta channel to the Yellow channel, as a result of the flesh tone becomes yellower.

In general, these are just theoretical examples, the main thing is to understand the principle of the Channel Mixer tool, and then look at the situation, how it can be applied.

Using the Channel Mixer command in Photoshop

Team Channel Mixer(Channel Mixer) in Photoshop gives you a unique mixture of RGB or CMYK channels that is very difficult to achieve with other commands. To learn how to use this command to convert an image from color mode to grayscale, or to tone a grayscale image, see Chapter 9 of the Photoshop tutorial, section "Turning a layer to grayscale using the Channel Mixer command."

When moving the source channel slider to the left Black(Black) The amount of black in the channel decreases, while to the right it increases.

Remember the ratio of 6 basic color components: from cyan(Blue) to Red(Red), from Magenta(Magenta) to Green(Green) and from Yellow(Yellow) to Blue(Blue). Reducing the amount of cyan, for example, will cause an increase in the red tint in the channel, and vice versa. If you have forgotten these ratios, open the dialog box color balance(Color balance).

Move the slider Constant(Constant) to the right to add the color of the current output channel as a thin layer to the entire image. Move it to the left to remove that color and add its associated colors to the entire layer.

  1. Click the button OK.

At first there was an idea to just post gif-animations showing the work of the sliders Channel Mixer on the example of curves, but it turned out, in my opinion, not very clearly, I had to add small comments to the illustrations.

Let me remind you Channel Mixer- a tool for mixing channels, redistributing brightness by setting the recipe from the percentage of the original image channels. By default, output channels ( output channels) are obtained only at the expense of the brightnesses of the source channels corresponding to them, that is, a freshly added adjustment layer Channel Mixer does not change the image in any way:

In terms of curves, shifting the slider of any of the source channels is, in fact, moving the white point up or down on the curve, which can be clearly seen in the example for one of the channels:

If it is difficult to mentally imagine negative exposure values, then everything is intuitively clear with positive ones: 100% - normal exposure, over 100% - overexposure, less than 100% - underexposure with a complete lack of channel exposure of 0%.

Here it would be appropriate to draw an analogy with blending modes: a pair of antipodes color dodge and Multiply, which in a sense also change the exposure, have a similar effect on the white point.

It is obvious that the actual correction will be that part of the curve that fell into the main (light) window. The sections of the curve above or below the bright field fall into the cutoff, that is, they degenerate, respectively, to 255 or 0. But while we are in the interface Channel Mixer, we still have the opportunity to show these "latent" areas of the image that have fallen outside the window Curves, in particular, this can be done using the slider Constant:

In terms of curves slider Constant it's just a parallel shift of the curve up or down, that is, changing the brightness of each point of the selected channel by some fixed value (constant). The analogy from the blend modes for this slider is Linear Burn and Linear Dodge (Add) .

In the case when in the tab output channel moved several sliders at once, the new output channel will be the sum ( Add) brightness of all original channels, after each of them has been applied the correction corresponding to the position of the slider.

If in all tabs output channel If you need to set the same mixing recipe, then to facilitate the work, you can use the checkbox monochrome, it will link all channel tabs into one ( Gray). This checkbox is often used when it is necessary to transfer the contents of one of the channels to all or when creating a simple black and white image with channels averaged in different proportions.

Principle of operation Channel Mixer was considered for RGB, but in CMYK the essence does not change. If in relation to RGB we talked about the addition of brightnesses, then for CMYK on the contrary, pigments will form, that is, darkening.

:) Finally, a small question for self-examination of the learned material: how to invert a channel using the Channel Mixer? (Answer under spoiler)

Answer: we shift the channel slider that requires inversion by -100%, thereby obtaining negative brightness values. By setting Constant +100 we return the curve to the visible part of the window. Ready.
