Add and remove programs on Windows Mobile- a fairly simple operation, however, sometimes, for people who have not previously used communicators with this operating system there are difficulties with installing new and removing unnecessary software.
In this article (with pictures!) We will look at the process of installing and removing programs on a communicator with Windows Mobile 6.0. The operating system of the computer is Windows XP.
Before installing the program, you need to download it. We go to the Trashbox and download the application of interest to us, for example. 
Downloaded. Files of programs and games for Windows Mobile must have the extension .cab
In case the extension y zip file, rar or 7z - you should first unpack the archive, it should contain a cab file. Some programs do not need to be installed, they already have the extension .exe
Now you need to go to the phone. We will use standard way- across windows explorer... It assumes ActiveSync is already installed. Open "My Computer" and find "Mobile Device"
In fact, now the file can be thrown anywhere on the device. If you have a memory card, you should see a "Storage Card" folder. I usually copy programs there. After copying, turn off your phone and find your file in the explorer.
Click on it to start the installation. In most cases, this message will pop up. Ignore it and click Yes.
Next, the installer will ask where to put the program, showing the free space as well. 
If all is well, then the installation will be successful, you only need to confirm the completion. 
The program will now be available in the list of programs (Start - Programs)
Today I updated the firmware on my Toshiba Portege G900 on Windows Mobile 6.5.3-28205 and didn’t get my phone down, the feeling of being slow and unfinished disappeared.
Let's go in order. I would like to do something like an overview of the changes that have occurred from Windows mobile 6.5 to version 6.5.3. I would like to emphasize that these changes are not final and may be something else.

This is the initial screen, the first thing that made me happy is that it appeared faster than I expected. On a subjective assessment of 20 percent. Everything moves without brakes and freezes, at least for now. The bottom panel became translucent.

Having connected to the network and downloaded MyPhone, I restored my contacts and decided to add programs, at the same time check if the Marketplace works, I also had to download and install it, it was installed in two stages and checks for updates every time it starts.
There it turned out to be available for download Mobile Office 2010 beta, which was installed. At the same time, I installed Bing - search, maps, routes and places, which can recognize speech, though he refused to understand Russian.
The office was installed, asked to reboot, now there is also SharePoint Workspace Mobile 2010 (beta) and the ability to use docx and xlsx, the latter, although it refused to open correctly, citing an error.
Back to the operating system itself, SMS correspondence began to display a little more beautifully, underwent changes and contacts, now information about each began to be displayed larger, each type of number has its own icon, the contact editing was a little surprised - a strange gray cell in the background suggests an imperfection, the only one actually noticed, by the way now it became possible to create mail groups and message groups.
These are all the changes I have discovered so far.
Let me summarize: new firmware I was satisfied, everything is working (so far) and quickly enough, it's nice that the office now supports the new format, I'm very glad that the Marketplace has started working, the interface of the program, by the way, is Russian. there would be more programs there, but this, I think, is a matter of time. It seemed to me that the cell phone's operating time decreased slightly, maybe because I was using it very actively ...

Windows Mobile 6.5 beta - first impressions
As you know, the Windows Mobile operating system, which is used on PDAs and communicators, is far from perfect. She was far from perfect when the world did not yet know about the iPhone and the fact that even portable devices can be easily operated with your fingers, and not with a sharpened stick, and when the iPhone appeared, it became clear that Microsoft you still have to raise the bottom to bring your operating system, if not to the top, then at least to the top league. Therefore, I took with interest the news that Microsoft is preparing to release a new version of Windows Mobile, which has the number 6.5, and when I was asked to familiarize myself with it, I did not think for a long time. It is, of course, understandable that this is not a major version change (we haven't heard anything about WM 7 yet), but there was a hope that in 6.5 Microsoft will at least correct those elements that caused criticism in previous versions. The beta version that was tested was adapted for RoverPC communicators (in fact, there were no versions for other manufacturers at that time), and I installed it on the RoverPC Pro G7 model.

First, we'll talk about what's new there - avoiding any emotions as much as possible - and then we'll swear, analyze the innovations and give our assessment. So ... The old trouble with Windows Mobile is the desktop. This wretched piece of work lasts with Windows CE 3.0 Pocket PC Edition, so practically no changes are made. Unless new links appear there like "blocking" or "getting started", and that's all. However, in new version Microsoft finally (hopefully sounded sarcastic enough) suggested for the desktop mobile devices interesting innovation under Windows name Defaults. Just don't fall out of your chair when you admire this ingenious invention. Here it is in all its glory!

A well-known element of the iPhone interface is the rotating wheels, which are so convenient to turn back and forth with your finger. Here, too, you see, the idea was to twist these elements with your finger, and when you hit the corresponding menu item, a panel should open, on which you can also click with your finger.

So that's it. Without touching yet appearance of all this disgrace and ideas as such, I must say that it is absolutely impossible to control such a novelty with your fingers. Finger scrolling is not really done, no matter how hard you try. The maximum that is possible is to poke (often more than once) a specific menu item, and when the panel appears, also persistently poke your finger into it. All this works from the third - fifth time, so you will be just some kind of woodpecker. It is clear that the communicator's screen is not technologically the same as that of the iPhone, but SPB Software somehow manages to make applications that can really be operated with a finger. In this case, it's better to forget about the fingers - this desktop thing can only be controlled by the style. Yes, and they do not do very well, because initially the idea is stupid: it is sharpened for the fingers, so it is not particularly convenient to control the style. But with the help of your fingers it is generally impossible to control, so you have to use the stylus. Which in this case is inconvenient to control, because it is sharpened under the fingers. GREAT! After that, go to the "Today" screen settings, remove this stupid Windows Default, set the usual, albeit no less stupid, set of elements.

Apart from Windows Default, nothing has been added to the "Today" settings. (In my version, however, there was also the SmartToday program from Rover, but, firstly, it is not included in the operating system, and secondly, it is rather poor, so we will not talk about it at all.) notifications have a memory icon (which is not needed there either), but there is no task manager icon, which is desperately needed there. In the very concept of the operating system, which in this form has been going on since Windows CE, nothing has changed: clicking on the cross does not close the program, but minimizes it (as if communicators have megatons of RAM). You can close the program only through the task manager. Which in this case is called only through the "Start" button and is kindly located in the list at the very bottom. Let's see what other innovations are. The Start button has completely changed - it now looks like this.

Well, in general, at least here is a more or less correct approach. The old "Start" button gave out the usual menu, as in an operating system for large computers, and except for the style it was impossible to operate with it - therefore, almost no one used it. Less than a hundred years later, Microsoft decided to fix this anachronism and turned the Start menu into a set of large icons that you can operate with your fingers. Hurray, hurray, we approve entirely! But here, unfortunately, everything is not very thankful to God. Large icons, which are really convenient to press with your finger, are placed on the newfangled "honeycomb" grid. However, having given themselves a Kashpirovsky installation that users will now all work together with their fingers with devices that were not originally intended for this, Microsoft forgot to make a vertical scroller for this cell. In principle, you can scroll all this with a style, but with your fingers - the hell with two! Impossible by definition - well, perhaps on devices with a large screen such as HTC Max 4G (HTC HD). The icons from the bottom can be dragged up, but somehow crookedly - not to the desired position, but just holding the style on the icon appears the inscription "Drag Up". It is also interesting that when you return from the application selected by the "Start" button, you are thrown to the "Today" screen, and not to the list of applications by the "Start" button. That is, you are not going where you came from. For the old Start button, which was a menu, this was fine. For a new one - windows with icons - this is completely wrong. Well, a special "thank you" for the fact that with the new construction of "Start" as a class, the list of the last ones disappeared. running programs, and in fact it is very necessary! Then I started testing standard applications... The overwhelming majority of them have not changed in any way - that is, as they were sharpened only for working with the style, they have remained. But there are also changes that we will now look at. MSIE slightly changed - at least its main page.

At the bottom there are icons that allow you to work with your finger. However, the same favorites icon leads to the usual small list, with which you can work only with the style. Here are just the scaling icon made correctly - with its help it is convenient to change the scale of the displayed page.

Well, plus - in the parameters we finally made some kind of grouping of settings. Added some kind of Marketplace program. Apparently, it should lead here. But it does not lead anywhere, it gives a connection error. Appeared MSN Weather- when connected, it proudly gives an error. But, apparently, they will fix it for release. Appeared Microsoft My Phone- allows you to sync contacts, calendar, tasks, music, messages, photos and so on with account in this service. Only you cannot enter there: the service, as I understand it, is only being tested and it is impossible to register there right away (I tried it) - I was added to the wait list and promised to send the code. Have Calculator slightly changed the design. But fundamentally nothing has changed - the size of the buttons is the same as it was.

And the last - some search widget... As it turns out, this is just launching the pda version of Live Search. Windows Media Player has not changed at all, although when demonstrating WM 6.5 Ballmer showed an already updated version. So it probably just came across such a firmware. But in this version they made an absolutely gorgeous blocking! Previously, on the locked screen, there was simply an "Unblock" button that had to be pressed. And now such a charm appears ...

Brilliant, huh? Only it is not unlocked in any way. I already pressed on the button, and on the arrows, and on the screen - to no avail. It's good that I have an iPhone, and I suddenly realized that the developer of this disgrace also bought himself an iPhone. Because, like the iPhone, they did push-button unlocking. Only in the iPhone the button is shifted to the right (which is very clearly visible and understandable), but in the new Windows Mobile it needs to be shifted to the left or right, which is not a damn thing, because in the interface of this operating system there was no button shift class at all. But at least the guy bought himself an iPhone - he also figured out the time and date on the lock screen, not even five years have passed. However, upon closer examination, it turned out that the blocking window is a little more functional than it seemed at first. It at least knows how to show missed calls and SMS - something like that.

Moreover, if you move the phone or SMS button, respectively, you get into calls or SMS. Comfortable. Although SPB Software came up with this idea at least three or four years ago. It also shows current appointments from the calendar in the blocking window. Well, that's all, it seems. Of course, I tested the beta version, which, judging by the release announcements, lacked some improvements to the menus in certain programs (like they promised to make the menu larger in several applications), there was no new windows Media Player and an updated keyboard and phone section (sort of promised). But even if these elements, which I have never seen before, will be new, beautiful and functional (which is about 98% doubtful), I have the following simple questions for the developers: 1. Why was the "Today" screen as incredibly miserable as it remained? Already all and sundry make their own applications that turn "Today" into at least something more or less functional, well, buy something from good developments or try, since you yourself cannot do anything like that! 2. What alternatively gifted phenomenon has come up with this Windows Default, with its ugly TEXT menu items, which, moreover, are almost impossible to scroll with your fingers? Who could have thought of making such a wretched shell in the 21st century? Did you guys unfreeze some programmer who got frozen in 1985 for sabotaging the workplace? 3. Why is there still no at least some convenient task manager called by some icon from the main screen? (HTC did this a hundred years ago.) 4. Why you still can't set up close / hide running application by a certain press, as was done in SPB Pocket Plus exactly five years ago - in 2004? 5. Why is there still no normal convenient system of sound profiles? 6. Why did you think of the "Lock" screen to distract from the iPhone, but did not think to properly distort it from the excellent SPB Mobile Shell? 7. Why this new system"honeycomb", which is conceived for the control of fingers, is not really controlled by these fingers, and is it not very convenient to work with the stylus either? 8. Where are the widgets for the mobile operating system - why did Samsung come up with them, and they came up with them quite well, but you didn't? 9. Where are the normal desktop indicators - battery power, memory usage, and so on? 10. When will Windows Mobile be sharpened for finger operation and for new screen resolutions - the same HTC HD? There are no answers to these questions. And, apparently, it won't. This version shows that Microsoft does not want to improve their operating system, which they are very actively promoting in the communicator market. Attaching all sorts of fake tweeters to it, most of which do not squeak at all or squeak completely unmusically - yes, they are ready. And to bring to life the shortcomings that have been moving from version to version over the years and not a single developer will scratch his own head in the place with which he thinks to somehow fix it - alas, this is exactly the company's policy in the development of Windows Mobile. Guys, you’re going to play it out. Because it's one thing to sharpen your iPhone, which is initially incredibly beautiful and effective. And it's another matter - from year to year, with the help of third-party programs, remove the crookedness and jambs of your Windows Mobile. Even I was already tired of doing this - me, a person closely associated with Windows up and down. Even I chose to spit on this Windows Mobile and surrender to Apple - do you understand what a blow to Microsoft's reputation ?! In general, I am mortally disappointed. There is no longer any hope that Windows Mobile will become a decent operating system. Of course, a lot of things can be fixed by third-party developments, but if the operating system itself is initially poor, then, of course, there is not so much that can be done. Alas and alas ...

In order for these icons to be visible when assigned in the settings, you need to run windows file fexplore.exe, press Menu and select Show all files (a checkmark will appear). To watch Internet TV, you need access to a high-speed unlimited Internet (I watch via Wi-Fi). Be careful, or you can get money. Many icons in this interface do not have programs assigned to run and they are not included in the firmware. These icons serve to demonstrate the general concept of the interface. The weather display in this interface is rigidly tied to the position on the page (these are the first six icons on the third page). You cannot move these icons to another place (just six icons on the third page will be updated again). The weather is updated by clicking on the icon with the name of the city or through the My menu.
If you are not using the weather in Windows Phone 7, then the first six icons on the third page can be deleted. If you removed the icons and decided to turn on the weather update again, then before updating, create six empty icons at the top of the third page. If you do not create them, then when the weather is updated, the data will be written over the existing first six icons of the third page.

Dozens of beta versions of the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system are already flying in the air, being patched, improved and prepared thanks to the developers on the XDA Developers site, from where it was borrowed this instruction... Despite their unofficiality, these beta versions are very good - nice interface elements and a lot of fixed bugs allow you to install these versions on your communicator today.
I conducted an experiment on my GSM communicator HTC Touch Diamond... The installation process will differ slightly on other devices with support for 6.5, but in this manual I will focus mainly on the owners Touch devices Diamond and its keyboard brother Touch Pro ... Instructions for installing this OS on other communicators, such as the Touch HD, can be found on the XDA Developers forums.
Another important announcement: during the installation process you will have to dig deep into the bowels software your communicator, so the risk that the slightest mistake could have catastrophic consequences is indispensable. Therefore, you need to strictly follow all the instructions below, and everything will be fine with you, as well as with your phone.
What you need to install Windows Mobile 6.5:
- Communicator HTC Touch Diamond or Touch Pro (and only GSM);
- Free account on the XDA Developers website;
- Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM installer (choose: Diamond, HTC Pro);
- Operating room computer Windows system configured to sync with your phone;
- Bootloader (Diamond, Pro);

Before starting, you should probably copy your phone book and personal information. For example, you can use Microsoft's new online service called My Phone. You have to demolish all the software of your communicator, so it is better to save all the valuable information.
Installing the bootloader:
Most likely, many of you have already updated your devices, but from now on you used only official, registered utilities or from your cellular operator or from the phone manufacturer. Today we are going to install unofficial software, for which your phone is not yet ready. Thus, our first task is to install a new bootloader called HardSPL, which will allow your phone to download third-party applications, for example, the Windows Mobile ROM you need. Go:
1. Connect your phone to your computer and connect to your phone using. No special configuration is required - just make sure the connection is active.
2. Unzip the downloaded bootloader application and select a folder (you can find all the links above)
3. Go to this folder and run the exe file (usually called “ROMUpdateUtility.exe” or something like that)
4. Follow the instructions carefully. The app does a lot of checks to make sure you don't make any mistakes. You must have at least half the battery charge, the correct boot loader, and the computer that will not shut down and go into "sleep mode" at the most crucial moment. Carefully! Any oversight can have irreversible consequences!
5. We are waiting. You will see a data transfer bar on your phone and computer screens. This process will not take much time, because you are updating only a small part of the software.
6. Reboot your phone.
Installing a new receiver:
In reality, this is the most "technical" stage of the installation process, but I will try not to overload you with details. The bottom line is that your device has special software that is responsible for the various antennas that allow you to connect to cellular networks, GPS and so on. Reinstallation of the receiver will not practically change the operation of the device. However, this will allow you, or rather your new operating system, to manage all communication capabilities... Some receivers improve reception in certain networks and even allow you to connect to completely new mobile frequencies. For further information, I suggest you refer to the XDA Developers site again.
7. Reconnect the phone to the computer, as in step 1
8. Extract the downloaded receiver files and select a folder for them
9. If the application is equipped with its own bootloader, then go to step 12
10. If not, download the bootloader to a specific folder
11. Copy the extracted receiver file - it must have the extension .NBH - to the folder where you downloaded the bootloader
12. Run the bootloader as in step 3
13. Follow the instructions as in steps 4 and 5
14. The phone restarts. Not much will change, you may only need to adjust the network settings. Do not pay attention to this, because now you have to erase everything that is on your phone
Installing Windows Mobile 6.5
Now the fun begins - we proceed directly to installing a new Windows versions Mobile 6.5. this stage will take the most time and you need to concentrate as much as possible, because you are replacing the basic software of your communicator. Hopefully, since you've gotten to this stage, the rest of the installation will go smoothly. The process is essentially the same, only the .NBH file is changed. Forward and with the song!
15. We connect the phone to the computer (for the last time, I promise you)
16. Unpack the bootloader again, but into a different folder
17. Unpack the Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM file (a file with the .NBH extension, about 80-100 MB in size) into the same folder where the bootloader is located
18. Launch the bootloader and follow the instructions. Make sure that the connection between your computer and your phone is not interrupted.
19. We sit and wait. This process will take a little longer, about 15-20 minutes.
20. When the process is complete, your device will reboot and you will see the initial Windows screen Mobile 6.5. Then various initialization processes will start
21. WinMo should automatically detect your cellular operator and apply the appropriate network settings. If this does not happen, you can configure the network manually in the Settings panel at the top level of the new start menu.
Total:
Congratulations! Now you are the proud, semi-official owner of a communicator with Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system! It's hard to even imagine that you want to return to your old platform, but if this happens, then just repeat the process with another ROM file. You will find many installers for Windows Mobile 6.1 on the Internet, including official versions on the XDA Developers website.
