Last year Samsung presented to the public new design a clamshell phone aimed at the mass market segment. The experiment was successful, and the SGH-X460 - a pilot product in a new package - became quite popular. Most of the fans of the new design belong to the female audience.
Acting in its own style, Samsung further began to introduce models in the same design, but differing in detail of functionality and aimed at different market segments. The first was the SGH-E330 with a built-in camera and two color screens, positioned in the middle segment, and in the new generation of phones Samsung decided to present models in the X460 case and in the lowest price range for its clamshells. To save money, these models were made single-screen, of which the X480 has no additional equipment, and the X640, which we are examining today, is equipped with a built-in VGA camera.
Equipping a single-screen "clamshell" with a camera, which increases its cost, while this increase could be spent on installing an external display, looks illogical - from the point of view of a pragmatic user, the ability to find out who is calling without opening the case is much more useful than the ability take pictures with a cheap phone. However, Samsung, releasing the X640, was guided not by pragmatism, but by a simple desire to diversify its line (there is already a two-screen clamshell without a camera, a one-screen without a camera - too, a two-screen with a camera - too, only a one-screen with a camera is missing). The company has relied on fashion for camera phones: it is assumed that the presence of a camera itself should attract “fashion” users, that is, those focused on fashion, rather than functionality or optimal equipment.
In fact, the X640 is actually an exact copy of the E800 (almost the entire set of functions, structure and design of the menu is identical), placed in the body of the X460 (the dimensions, design, shape are the same, only the design and equipment of the front panel are different).
Design and construction
Samsung SGH-X640 is a compact folding phone. The device is slightly larger than the smallest Samsung clamshells (A800, S300, E600), but not much, we can assume that it is the same in size, and the presence of an internal antenna makes it noticeably smaller in overall height, and noticeably ennobles the design due to the lack of a disproportionately long antenna rod, which severely spoils the appearance of the S300 and E600. 
The exterior of the X640 is noble, Samsung applies a classic design to mainstream phones and it turns out to be right over and over again - consumers like it. It's nice that the quality of the plastic and the finish is just as high as in the top models, the assembly is very thorough, with almost invisible grooves, there is no need to even talk about backlashes or creaks in the hinge. Additional design benefits are provided by a rubber pad where the lid and base unit come into contact in the open position. It softens deployment and increases the durability of the hinge by eliminating hard impacts.
Unlike the X460, the new model has a traditional keyboard shape, with trapezoidal keys that are large enough and widely spaced to provide the best user experience. The control group of keys is organized in a traditional way for Samsung. As with all phones on previous version Suwon platform, button i the built-in joystick does not perform the confirmation operation, unlike newer Samsung products (D500, E720, etc.).
The rocker key on the left side, which controls the volume, is traditionally made convex and very comfortable. In addition to it, the body houses only the hands-free headset jack of the traditional type, closed with a plastic cap on the nylon axle - this system has replaced the traditional rubber cap and seems to be much more durable. V bottom end the base unit has a socket for a charger and a data cable with a "narrow" type of plug.
On the front panel there is no familiar external screen, there is only a glossy cover plate - in our sample it is black. Closer to the hinge is the lens of the built-in camera - this is an ordinary "bird's eye", but with the help of decorative rings the visible size of the lens is increased, it looks solid and gives the impression of the importance of the camera in the phone. There is a self-portrait mirror under the lens, and even lower - led indicator. 
The main screen of the X640 is a 128 × 160 UFB matrix displaying 65,536 colors, the same as that of the X460. The picture on the screen is quite bright and contrasting, it has an average graininess, the level of readability in direct sunlight is below average.
Battery design and SIM card slot are typical Samsung. Li-ion battery, the capacity of which is not indicated, is made in the form of one piece with a battery compartment cover, is attached with hooks in the lower part and a latch button - in the upper part. There are no backlashes or creaks in the design, the battery sits absolutely motionless. The SIM card is fixed in the slot with a pair of fixed metal retaining bars on the sides.
Menus and functions
Samsung SGH-X640 in terms of software "filling" almost completely repeats the E800 model, the similarity is perhaps even greater than that of many others Samsung models based on the same platform. Only one icon in the main menu has been redrawn, which depicts the phone - now there is a model reminiscent of the X640. 
The main menu has the form of a two-dimensional array of icons (three columns, three rows), this type of menu is considered today the unspoken industry standard. Submenus are one-dimensional, text-based. All menu items are numbered, quick navigation using numeric keys works. The organization of the main menu in the form of a matrix has an additional advantage: the arrangement of the icons repeats the layout of the keys, so it is intuitively clear which button to press during quick navigation to open the desired item. In the nested menus, all items are numbered, and orientation is also not a problem.
Samsung SGH-X640 is equipped with extended address book, designed for 1000 records, each of which can store 4 phone numbers, fax number, e-mail address and text note. In addition, for each contact in the phone book, you can set group membership, picture, individual ringtone. Access to the address book is carried out only with the right soft-key; there is no way to exit to records from the main menu. The address book has its own menu, made in the traditional Suwon platform style. It is two-dimensional, with horizontal scrolling of items on the top level and vertical scrolling of the bottom. Entries from the cells of the SIM card and the built-in memory of the phone are displayed in a single list, the only difference between them is that the functions of the extended address book and even distribution into groups are naturally not available for entries on the SIM card.
Let's go to the main menu of the phone. The first item is reserved for SIM menu, if such is recorded by the operator on the SIM card. If the card does not support this function, the item remains unavailable.
On the menu Call Log there is a standard set of functions for working with call memory and their cost, if these functions are supported by the operator.
Using the menu Network services You can manage GSM network functions such as call forwarding, call restriction and waiting, etc.
Paragraph Network services allows you to customize the sounds. This applies not only to ringtones, but also to the soundtrack of almost all events taking place in the phone. Vibration alert is also controlled in the Sound settings menu. The phone does not have such type of notification as vibration simultaneously with a sound signal. This is typical for Samsung products; instead of this mode, it is suggested to use melodies in which the vibration signal works in time with the music, it is controlled by one of the SMAF polyphony tracks. However, the selection of such tunes is limited.
Next in the main menu follows Posts- work with messages. The phone supports MMS, including multi-page ones. By default, one page is provided, however, with the command from context menu you can add more; the transition between the pages is done with horizontal arrows. On each page, you can insert a picture or photo and a sound file, for which the menu provides commands for direct transition to the corresponding folders; besides this there are subject fields and text message... The phone provides for the input of Cyrillic letters for MMS, SMS and text data in the phone's memory. From the menu Posts voicemail is also accessed.
Menu WAP and games contains a set of "entertainment" functions - traditionally for Samsung, it combines the Openwave WAP-browser, which supports WAP 2.0, programs for viewing photos, pictures and sounds stored in the phone's memory. The next item is Games- allows you to run and manage Java MIDlets. From the games, SnowBallFight (an arcade snowball game with a tournament system and the purchase of additional equipment) and a Bubble Smile puzzle are preinstalled. In total, 3072 KB of memory are allocated for Java midlets. 
On the menu Organizer collected utilities for business purposes. Paragraph New reminder- the first in the list - it is intended so that the user can start working with the organizer by adding a new event, this is not a text notebook, as it might seem, judging by the name. This option allows you to first make a note, determine the essence of the event, and only then indicate its type (event, task, challenge, anniversary) and refer to the corresponding date in the calendar. This is convenient when operational work, there is no need to try to remember the information until the corresponding menu is called up and all service data is entered, or to delay the interlocutor.
The calendar has only a monthly display mode, it has a convenient indicator of the total number of active events - they are displayed right under the date array in the form of numbers next to four icons corresponding to the four main types of events. Unfortunately, the organizer's memory is limited to 25 events of each type, which may not be enough in terms of both total number and ratio. So you may need to remember not 25, but 30 anniversaries, without using, say, a to-do list. If there is a general limit on the number of objects, this can be easily done, but here the limit will not allow you to enter 5 additional annual reminders.
Further in the organizer there are: a list of tasks, a world clock and an alarm clock. The latter is worth dwelling on especially, since it allows you to program three different recurring reminders, for each of which the time is set and the days on which the reminder is triggered are selected. If desired, for any signal, you can set a single actuation. For most people, this should be enough. The list of utilities for business purposes is completed by a calculator, a powerful converter of values (currency, length, weight, volume, area, temperature), a countdown timer and a stopwatch. 
Unlike the E800, the X640 has a voice recorder - this function is gradually appearing even in models on older platforms, as it becomes possible to support it in hardware. In the X640, the voice recorder allows you to make recordings of arbitrary length, limited only by the amount of free memory. The voice recorder does not work during a call.
Built-in camera accessible from the menu Camera, either by tilting the joystick up, or using a special key on the right side of the case. It allows you to take photos with a resolution of 128 × 120, 128 × 160, 320 × 240 and 640 × 480 pixels. In this case, you can choose one of four levels of JPEG compression, from "economical" to the highest quality.
The camera has a rich set of settings. A number of shooting programs are available - regular shot, series of shots, night mode... An artistic frame is automatically added to the photo, if necessary. A number of filters can be applied to the frame - black and white, negative, sepia, relief or imitation of a hand drawing. Image rotation, mirroring, and timer photography are also available.
To quickly adjust the most common options, use "hot keys" - the side scroller controls the flip of the image, horizontal deflection of the joystick adjusts the brightness of the picture, vertical - digital zoom.
However, with such a wealth of choice, it cannot be said that the camera shoots with a quality sufficient for viewing images on a PC screen. As before, photos look good only when viewed on screen. mobile phone... Typical shooting problems are noise and insufficient color saturation in indoor and lower light conditions.

Impressions and conclusions
The performance of the Samsung SGH-X640 is no different from those of the prototype E800 and X460 models. This means normal communication quality, up to four days autonomous work, high quality and polyphony volume, average perceptibility of vibrating alert.
The model is purely assortment, it is quite obvious. We are very restrained in the idea of a clamshell with one screen and a camera, however, a mass buyer may have a different opinion on this matter: a rather successful design of the model and a general interest in cameraphones can play a role, and the X640 will be on sale, albeit not in large volumes, but quite acceptable for Samsung. notice, that similar models appear at some other firms, for example, this is Panasonic X400.
Nevertheless, the X640 is technically quite well executed, looks attractive, which means it deserves a good mark.
They are "books", are in great demand. They are especially loved, of course, by the ladies. However, a representative of the stronger sex, armed with a folding form factor phone, is far from uncommon. The acquisition of such a device is, perhaps, the simplest and surest way to emphasize social status, to beat the image, and simply, excuse me, to show off. And this is probably why: As practice shows, real "books" can only be made in Eastern countries - there is an international division of labor. And more than others succeeded in this, of course, Samsung, whose models, perhaps, can be taken for reference. At least in terms of approach and physical performance. The package contents of the new Korean device are very laconic: in the box you can find only a charger and a little printing. Neither the beloved branded "suspension" headset, nor a spare battery was included in the kit; it's a pity. Thus, we immediately set ourselves up that this is a phone of the initial price category. The approach of Samsung designers to the design of their new pipes is quite interesting: artists do not like radical experiments and maintain a strict corporate identity for several years now. This is the color scheme, the layout of the main functional units, the shape and arrangement of the keys. Looking, for example, at the X600 released a year ago, many were surprised to note that it rather strongly resembles the old R210. Nevertheless, before blaming the vendor for the lack of imagination and lazy designers engaged in self-plagiarism, two interesting facts should be remembered. Exactly Samsung phones won awards at the international design forum IF in their nomination, it was them that were put to the president of Nokia by Jorma Olilla as an example by the management of the Finnish concern at the recent shareholders' meeting. So, there is something to think about. Still, realizing that even the most crystal-clear corporate identity tends to become outdated over time, Samsung artists carefully add fresh touches to the design of new models. They are introduced gradually, looking closely from all sides and checking the sales ratings. This is approximately how they manage, on the one hand, to keep up with life, and on the other, to avoid the results of failed experiments. No matter how similar Korean clamshells are to each other, each has a characteristic flavor and remains quite recognizable against the background of others. It's nice. This is the design of the X640: stylish and original enough to be noticeable and, at the same time, not a half of the case protrudes from the slender rows of the classic clamshells from Samsung. The device is round, outlined very gracefully, well-arranged and, most importantly, ergonomically. Perhaps the last word is the key - the body of the phone seems to fit in the palm of your hand, you just don't want to put it in your pocket. The designer rounded off all possible corners, removed irregularities and roughness, and at the end he received an excellent product in terms of physical performance. The picture is complemented by very small dimensions - only 87.4 x 47 x 23 with a weight of 85 g. The dimensions of the device cannot be called too miniature, the epithet "optimal" asks for them. This is objective: a man's palm of a relatively large size will not experience any discomfort, for a woman's palm it will also be quite comfortable. The model is rid of the annoying external antenna, which is a plus. It is a pleasure to hold this phone in your hand, this is largely due to the branded "Samsung" plastic of excellent quality. It is smooth, silvery, very pleasant to the touch. The assembly of the case, as always, did not cause any complaints, but a slight horizontal backlash in the area of the bearing hinge constantly reminds that a clamshell is inherently an unreliable design. It is likely that this backlash will increase to annoying proportions over time. The surface of the polymer from which the phone is made withstood a rather serious test: for a week I dangled in my pockets in a company with foreign bodies like a lighter and a flash drive, and after that not a single scratch remained on it - we write it down to the absolute pluses of the model.
The front panel of the device, with an impressive knowledge of the laws of optical deception, has been reduced by an eye-catching black insert. It is such a final touch to the individuality of this tube and clearly distinguishes it from its neighbors in the line. However, the stylistic center of the face is the built-in VGA sensor lens. It is taken in an impressive plastic edging, on which the manufacturer did not even hesitate to write the focal length. A little lower there is a self-portrait mirror and an LED that will signal the device's activity with all the colors of the rainbow.
On the back panel there is a battery cover fastening latch, which is habitually combined with the battery. The design of the metal slide of the SIM-slot was also not surprising, but the sound with which the SIM card entered the slot conjured up a clear picture of how the gold plating is removed from the contact pad of my long-suffering card with generous shavings.

On the left, there is a swing key, pleasantly planted right under the thumb. There is also a plastic cover for the headset jack. It is shrewdly fixed and the risk of losing it is small.
But the plastic "fake" covering the interface connector can be taken out completely freely from below: an absent-minded person will definitely forget it on the table, taking the phone off the charge and, in the end, will lose it. Not a big problem - but unpleasant.
The platform, on which the upper part of the front panel of the device is laid when open, is carefully lined with a rubber gasket - Samsung always pays close attention to details. In addition to this nice little thing, there is an eyelet for a lace on the top end.
Let's open the device. Between the shutters you can see the classic korean keyboard, display and speaker.
The key unit is comfortable and ergonomic: the buttons are embossed and spaced at an optimal distance. In the manufacture of the display, the manufacturer used a 65K UFB-matrix with a color resolution of 128 x 160. The X640 screen cannot be called exemplary: with a solid margin of brightness and rich color reproduction, its contrast leaves much to be desired; in addition, the image is completely inverted already at 120 "tilting to the side (with a vertical viewing angle, oddly enough, everything is in order.) tones), he has a habit of extremely unpleasant wheezing at high frequencies.
The opening angle of the flaps is usually small: at first it can cause some discomfort. The device does not shine with ease of opening either, although only a person familiar with the automatic finishing mechanism will pay attention to this, for example, in Samsung P510 and Panasonic X400. The vibrator is strong enough to draw attention from a jeans pocket, but you might not notice it from a purse.
