Positioning

The active development of the XpressMusic line required the creation of various solutions, including those based on the S40 platform. The advantage of such devices could be size, longer battery life compared to smartphones based on S60. Sound quality is even a parameter that depends on additional chips, software capabilities, but is not directly related to the product platform.

Simultaneously with the appearance of "slim" models, for example, Nokia 6500 Classic, the company created an analogue of this device with a musical component and positioned it as a youth solution. The reason for this is obvious: with similar functionality, the devices would begin to compete directly, which was undesirable. It was very easy to breed them inside the line. On the one hand, a separate sound chip was added to the Nokia 5310, on the other hand, the design was made youthful and less strict. With the difference in cost at the level of 150-170 Euros, the models cannot be compared, the difference in price between them is too great.

The company made the Nokia 5310 the opening device of the XpressMusic line, even though the Nokia 5700 is still on the market. That is, the traditional candy bar form factor opens the product line, followed by the Nokia 5610 in the slider form factor, and then the Nokia 5710. For the first time in Nokia were able to form a complete lineup of musical devices, where everyone can choose a model to their liking. The delay in the announcement of the Nokia 5710 is solely due to the need to sell the remains of the Nokia 5700, the models coincide in form-factor, but differ in a number of parameters, for example, a 3.2 megapixel camera in the older model.

At the beginning of 2008, all three models form a complete family, and all of them will be comparable in sound quality, but the difference will be found in the bundle and functionality. Let's take a look at the table to understand the main differences and the logic behind creating the XpressMusic family. I'll make a reservation that the Nokia 5710 model is not officially presented at this moment, specifications are subject to change, but only slightly, and this is unlikely.

The ideology of the development of the line looks harmonious, all three solutions are the same in terms of sound, but differ functionally. The first thing that catches your eye is the acquisition of junior models not too quality headphones HS-45, they will have to be instantly replaced with your own in order to fully enjoy the sound. It's the same story with Nokia N81, in fact all three models, with the exception of Nokia 5710, will sound the same with standard “ears”. The Nokia N81 could have become a music offer if the Nokia 5710 does not exist. At the same price of 360-370 Euros, the Nokia 5710 is equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, which makes the device interesting. But, as in the case of Nokia 5310, the youthful design is intended to scare away the conservative part of the audience, this product is not for them. In my opinion, it would be of great interest to work on analyzing how changes in design can reduce or, conversely, increase the potential audience of products. For example, in our case we are dealing with Nokia 5710, Nokia N81 and one more unannounced smartphone from Nokia, they all actually cost the same. But differences in design and minor in functionality turn these products from competitors into models that peacefully coexist.

Having outlined the price range for musical solutions, the company actually opened the veil of secrecy over the first half of 2008. Unlike the Walkman line, in which budget solutions appear, there is no stake here. The main parameter is the sound quality, which the manufacturer is trying to focus on. It turns out that even taking into account the quarterly cost reductions, the younger XpressMusic model at the end of its life cycle will cost about 180-185 Euros. This is the lower price limit for Nokia's music phones.

At the same time, the upper bar is not limited by anything. Despite the fact that the backbone of XpressMusic is the three described models, in reality many Nseries solutions will appear with the same ideology. Taking the Nokia N81 as an example, it can be seen that the manufacturer does not emphasize the musical component, does not provide the best headphones in the bundle, and tries to sell other aspects of this device to the consumer. Music is used as an important supplement, but not the main reason for buying a smartphone. The approach is not stupid and gives the company room to maneuver.

The analysis of the price band for the XpressMusic family shows that the chosen price step between the models of 70 Euro is large. In the future, if it is reduced to 50 Euros and the corridor of model prices remains the same, the manufacturer will be able to get not 3, but 4 models in the family at once. In my opinion, the launch of a musical flagship that costs about 350-380 Euros with the most interesting delivery set and which has a prototype in Nseries looks justified. It will probably not be a model similar to Nokia 5700/5710, their form-factor is too peculiar. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, because there is still almost a year before autumn-winter 2008.

For the current XpressMusic family Nokia began to actively develop the creation of accessories, we will consider several of them in the same review. Since the time of Nokia 5200/5300 for XpressMusic, blue and red have become corporate colors, the company continues to use them (including various shades).

Design, dimensions, controls

The phone measures 103.8x44.7x9.9 mm and weighs 71 grams. The phone is thin and this makes an impression, it is quite comparable in size with Sony ericsson W880i. The device does not stick out in the pocket of the shirt or in the jeans, is practically lost. In terms of how to carry the phone, there are no questions. The answer is simple - whatever you want.

There are only two color solutions for the case, the original colors of the music line are blue and red. Moreover, these colors highlight the area around the screen, inserts from metal panels. On the back, the company name is also in the same color. The rest of the body is made of dark gray plastic, it is matte to the touch, the color resembles graphite.

The quality of the plastic is high, it is scratch resistant. The back cover has a pattern of dots, so they are subject to abrasion, which gives the impression of a worn case. It is interesting that the body itself does not wear out, but the disappeared dots break the pattern, the lid does not look so good.

On the left side there is a charger connector (2 mm jack). On the top there is an on / off button, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a microUSB jack covered with a plastic flap. The volume rocker is on the right side. A separate camera button is not provided, while the lens of the 2-megapixel camera is placed on the rear wall.

There is a strap attachment.

The light sensor, which controls the backlight of both the screen and the keyboard, was taken to an unusual place, it is located to the right of conversational dynamics... The microphone is located on the front panel, to the right of the keyboard.

Display

The display in Nokia 6500 does not have a protective glass, at the same time it is present in Nokia 5310. Due to the mirrored edge, the screen on the Nokia 6500 Classic looks subjectively larger, but they are completely identical. Moreover, both technically and in terms of image perception, the displays in these products do not differ in any way. Which brings up the question of why they abandoned the protective screen on the older model.

The screen has a diagonal of 2 inches, resolution - 240x320 pixels (31x41 mm), displays up to 16 million colors. The picture is bright, the colors are vivid. The model differs in that the display is very, very good, comparable to modern models from Sony Ericsson, for example, Sony Ericsson W580i.

The picture is visible in the sun (TFT), the protective glass helps, as it is tinted. Another thing is that sometimes it already starts to glare, then you have to look for a comfortable angle. Unfortunately, due to the relatively small screen diagonal, it is impossible to talk about maximum comfort outdoors, this is always a compromise. The same applies to all phones from other manufacturers with a diagonal of 2 inches.

The screen fits up to 9 lines of text and up to three service lines. The font size is comfortable in most situations, for a number of sections the user can choose the font size.

Keyboard

The numeric keypad is comfortable, the buttons are medium in size and fit snugly together. On the other hand, there are no erroneous keystrokes, the key travel is not bad. Even a small navigation button is not satisfactory. Comparing the keyboard with the Nokia 6500 Classic, we can confidently say that it is more comfortable in the Nokia 5310. The key illumination turns on automatically, it white, not too bright, but quite sufficient.

Battery

The device uses a new type of battery - BL-4C. This is a 860mAh Li-ion battery. According to the manufacturer, it is capable of providing up to 300 hours of standby time and up to 5.4 hours of talk time. In the conditions of Moscow networks, the device worked for about 3 days with 2 hours of listening to the player, up to 1.5 hours of calls, minimum quantity SMS. We can say that the device will work in the range of 2-3 days for most buyers. Maximum music playback time (native headphones, maximum volume) is equal to 18 hours 50 minutes (the radio part is not disabled). The total charging time for the phone is about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

The battery is strong point of this model, it provides a runtime that is quite comparable to modern "full-size" devices. This is a big plus.

The phone uses an original design of the SIM-card holder. The pressure contact locks the card when the battery is installed. That is, you cannot remove the card when the device is turned on.

Memory, memory cards

The phone has about 28 Mb of memory available to the user. Slot for microSD cards located under the battery cover, hot-swappable cards are supported. The volume of cards that can be used with the device is not limited, we tried to work with a 4 GB card, there were no problems.

Performance

Maximum size JAR file - 1 Mb, heap size - up to 2 Mb. The performance of this phone is typical for the platform as a whole, there are no major changes here.

USB, Bluetooth

USB... The Nokia 5310 uses a microUSB connector located at the top of the device. This connector is used to connect both a data cable and a headset or charger. Moreover, when the cable is connected, the battery is charged.

The manufacturer claims that the device supports the USB 2.0 standard; indeed, in the USB Mass Storage mode the phone shows an average data transfer rate of 500-600 Kb / s. This is less than the data transfer rate of the Motorola RAZR2 V8, which is also equipped with a microUSB connector.

When connected, you can select USB mode Mass Storage, PC Studio or modem mode. There is no support for MTP mode, music compositions must be uploaded yourself. The choice of folders in which the music will be visible is limited by a number of preset ones, whether this limitation will be in commercial version- unknown.

Bluetooth... Version 2.0 with EDR is supported. The device has the following profiles:

  • Dial-Up Networking Profile
  • Generic Access Profile
  • Generic Object Exchange Profile
  • Object Push Profile
  • Serial Port Profile
  • Handsfree Profile
  • Headset Profile
  • Synchronization Profile
  • Basic Image Profile
  • File Transfer Profile
  • HID (host) Profile
  • Stereo Advanced Audio Distribution Profile
  • Advanced Audio / Video Remote Conference Profile

The Bluetooth implementation is good, there are no problems, everything works well. The operation of the stereo headset also raises no questions. Unlike Nokia 6500 Classic, the data transfer rate via Bluetooth does not exceed 78 Kb / s, while on the older model it is about 170-180 Kb / s.

Camera

The device is equipped with a 2-megapixel camera (CMOS), which is not that much by modern standards, but quite enough for a middle-class model. In this model, they decided not to rely on the photographic component, the camera became optional. Due to this, the camera module was chosen one of the most inexpensive, which ensures average quality.

The following picture resolutions are supported:

  • 1600x1200
  • 1280x1024
  • 1280x960
  • 800x600
  • 640x480
  • 320x240
  • 160x120.

Two minimum resolutions added to create photos as screen wallpaper. Three types of JPEG compression are supported: basic, normal, high. Considering that the quality does not shine anyway, you can safely set the maximum, it will not be worse.

You can turn off the shutter sound during shooting, there is a digital zoom x8, you should not use it. The pleasant moments include the ability to save photos both in the device's memory and on the card.

The effects in the device can be applied to the already obtained photographs, whether it is worth using them initially is up to you. Effects such as False Colors, Greyscale, Sepia, Negative, Solarize are available.

For fans of fast shooting, there is a corresponding mode: the camera takes up to 3 frames at a time, all settings remain the same as those selected for a single shot, including the resolution. There is a self-timer for taking pictures of yourself.

Video... The device allows recording video in 3GP format, video resolution - 128x96 pixels or 176x144 pixels. The recording quality also varies in three ways. You can limit the duration of the recording, but it can be maximum as long as the memory of the card or the device is enough. Effects can be applied to videos in the same way as to photos, their number is the same.

Themes, applications, games

The device has a number of themes that greatly diversify its look, the themes are well thought out, in harmony with the phone's appearance.

Several games are preinstalled in the phone, these are City Bloxx (a wonderful casual game), Snake III, Music Guess.

In addition to its wide range of features, the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic features a concept design with a sleek aluminum finish. At just 9.9mm thin and weighing less than 71 grams, the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic fits easily into your pocket or wallet. The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic has up to 18 hours of music playback, can store up to 3,000 songs on an optional 4GB microSD card, and has dedicated music keys. The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic has a built-in 2-megapixel camera and a bright 2-inch QVGA display.

The 5310 is one of the thinnest Nokia phones, its dimensions are 104x45x10 mm, its weight is 71 grams, it fits perfectly in the hand, it is practically not felt in the pocket. All corners of the case are rounded, moreover, the edges of the front panel are sloping, which visually gives the case an even thinner look. The quality of the materials is at a good level, the assembly is excellent, nothing plays or creaks. The sloping flanks on the sides of the display are metal inserts with multimedia keys, they are blue (Warrior Blue) or red (Sakura Red). The plastic is pleasant to the touch, dark gray in color, the back cover is decorated with an ornament of dots and the inscription NOKIA, the color of which matches the color of the metal inserts.

The display area is covered protective glass, it forms a glossy insert with a slot for the earpiece and light sensor. The TFT display is exactly the same as in the 6300 and 6500 Classic models - the physical size is 31x41 mm, the diagonal is 2 inches, it has a resolution of 240x320 pixels, and is capable of displaying up to 16 million colors. The picture is quite bright and saturated, the viewing angles are great, the display also behaves very well in the sun - it fades a little, but remains readable.

The keypad is represented by a navigation key, medium in size, but nevertheless quite comfortable, two soft keys and two buttons for accepting and rejecting a call. The number keys are small, but they are located close to each other, the key travel is noticeable, erroneous keystrokes are rare. White backlighting is evenly distributed over the keys and is sufficient for comfortable work in any lighting conditions.

On the left side there is a thin connector for connecting a charger. On the right side are a silver volume rocker and a strap holder. Due to its rather small size, the phone can be safely worn around the neck. The bottom end is free of any elements, and on the top there is a standard 3.5 mm mini-jack, a microUSB connector covered with a plastic flap, and an on / off button for the device.

On the back side, in the upper part, there is a 2 megapixel camera lens, in the lower part there are three slots for polyphonic speakers, and despite the fact that there are three slots, there are two speakers themselves, but there is no real presence of a stereo effect, since the speakers are located too close to each other. friend. Under the cover there is a BL-4CT battery with a capacity of 860 mAh, a SIM card slot and on the side under the SIM card there is a MicroSD memory card slot, hot swapping of cards is supported.

Nokia 5310 :: Review :: Series40 5th Edition Platform Features

The device is built on the new S40 5th platform, its differences from S40 3rd are small and affected only the interface of the music player and radio, the message service (a line for quick attachment of multimedia appeared at the bottom), and also the Adobe Flash Lite Player was updated to version 2.1, support for the MIDP profile (from version 2.0 to 2.1), JSR-248 and a number of other specifications. These updates are important primarily for software developers, but they will also be useful for the end user, for example, with the help of MIDP 2.1, multimedia buttons used only in a music player will become available for Java applications, with support for JSR-234 it will become 3D sound is available in Java applications, etc. In the future, Features Packs will appear with new updates to the S40 5th, as was the case with the third edition of the Series40 platform.

Nokia 5310 :: Review :: Active standby

The customizability of the standby mode is the highest to date and surpasses many of the company's smartphones. Literally everything that is possible is configured. First, you can configure 2 soft keys and 4 joystick deflections. There is nothing special about this, except that now you can display an icon on the screen that reminds you exactly which deviation is being triggered. It is very reminiscent of the implementation of a similar idea in Motorola phones.

Secondly, you can configure the active standby mode. The settings for this mode are very pleasing. You can take out a line for quick access to 5 applications (if you want more or less links, then this is also configurable), while the user chooses which applications he himself. Then you can display information about 3 more applications. By default, these are audio applications (mp3 player and radio show what exactly they are playing, clicking on them leads to the transition to the selected application), a calendar and a note. The calendar displays all events and to-do's for the current day. You can navigate the calendar without leaving the standby mode using the navigation key (left / right), while all information from the calendar that is available with that date will also be displayed. A note is a plain text that you can enter as a reminder that will always be on the screen in standby mode. Information about their work can also be displayed on the screen in the standby mode with a timer, general indicators and applications "my presence". The order of the displayed lines can also be changed, and their number can be reduced. In short, you can customize absolutely everything, from a completely blank screen to a super informative screen in standby mode. Thirdly, the "Active" menu and font color changes have not gone anywhere. The latter is useful if you use your own picture as a background. The font size when dialing a number is large enough.

It should be noted that for music models Nokia has provided "musical" interface themes, for models in blue, they are blue-black, for a red model - red-black.

Nokia 5310 :: Overview :: Main menu

Nokia 5310 has four main menu display types: list, icons, icons and signatures, tabs. The display of some internal menus can also be changed. The font size in the whole phone is adjustable only for 3 applications - "Messages", "Contacts" and "Internet". In addition, there is Fast passage using digital navigation and voice control (with pronunciation training).

To top it off, it should be noted that menu items can be moved (submenu items cannot be), depending on how you want. In combination with the active standby and menu settings, almost everything in the phone can be accessed with just a few clicks, because deviations of the navigation key and active standby can work together (in this case, there are 3 deviations of the key for launching applications, one is reserved for active standby mode).

Nokia 5310 :: Review :: Call service, contact book

As in previous models, there is no normal and understandable meter of free / used memory, only a percentage display. The check showed that the capacity of the phone book is 1000 contacts (6 phones and a full address field). A contact can be assigned up to five numbers of five different types(general, cell, home, work, fax), address (street, city, region, postal code, country), RTT address, address Email, presence service identifier, note, image and video. I was very pleased with the possibility of assigning a ringtone to each subscriber - not a group, but individually to subscribers.

The phone book has 3 ways to display contacts - "Names list", "Name and number" and "Name and picture". The size of the picture is large enough. In addition, there is a VideoID function - if a video is assigned to a subscriber in the contact book, then it will be played on the screen during a call, we can say that this is a very interesting function. If both a picture and a video are installed, then the priority remains with the video.

The user can create his own groups (up to 25), there are no preset groups. Collisions are allowed, that is, the same contact can be in different groups. If a call melody is assigned to a user, which is different from the melody assigned to the group, then the user melody will work, this is quite logical. Groups are displayed right in the contact list, which is also difficult to call unreasonable. There is a Quick Dial function, the user can access keys from the 2nd to the 9th.

The call log is standard: there is a general list of all calls, as well as separate lists of incoming, outgoing and missed calls.

Nokia 5310 :: Review :: Messages

The 5310 messaging service includes SMS, MMS, E-mail, audio messaging and so-called "quick messaging". Almost nothing has changed drastically in SMS; a line has appeared at the bottom of the editor for quickly adding multimedia files to a message. By adding a file, the SMS message automatically becomes an MMS message. You can still insert numbers and contact names, emoticons. The T9 dictionary is configured for predictive input, which is essentially a selection of words as you write the text, it works mainly on long words... Another important improvement is the ability to copy / paste text. Access to this function is possible through the context menu, because there is no dedicated key for working with text (like in smartphones based on S60), which is certainly not so convenient, but it is still a big plus of the phone.

Messages up to 300Kb in size are supported, there is an automatic conversion of images if their size exceeds these same 300Kb. Audio messages are a kind of MMS service, when "writing" it, a dictaphone opens automatically, and all that remains is to turn it on and record. When the voice recorder is turned off, an MMS message is automatically generated, and the user only needs to select a recipient.

The e-mail client has a convenient setting wizard similar to the Setting Wizard used in Nokia smartphones. With this wizard, you can easily configure mailbox, the settings of the most popular e-mail providers are available, there is also a choice by region. Russia is not bad at all, there are all basic free mail servers... In the settings, you can choose to download only headers, the maximum message size, the type of secure input, the default encoding. The built-in e-mail client supports POP3 / IMAP4 / SMTP / APOP protocols. There is support for attachments that are understood by the device itself. The main problem, as it was, remains the same - in some cases, the support for Russian encodings does not work correctly. Letters are understood in both KOI-8 and win-1251. However, if the letter in the header does not contain an indication of its encoding in the header, then problems begin.

Nokia 5310 :: Review :: Multimedia capabilities

The music player interface is already familiar to users from the S40 3rd FP2, it is the same intuitive view with the navigation key control buttons, you can judge it from the screenshots below. Supported Album Art - Album cover image. Added support for music player and radio themes. The software capabilities of the player of the musical model 5310 remained the same as in non-musical devices.

The software capabilities of the player of the musical model 5310 remained the same as in non-musical devices. The equalizer is 5-band, it has two user settings, its appearance is slightly changed, so you can see the tuning strips in the upper part, and a list of all equalizers in the lower part. Everything is also configurable for the playback mode, repeat tracks and playback in split. There is an extended stereo base mode, its activation does not radically affect the sound quality, it seems that this functionality is present "for show".

A music library is available, there is a division by artist, album, genre, etc. The sound quality is average, the 5310 is comparable to modern music models from SonyEricsson, in particular, to its rival W880i. The included HS-45 headset with 3.5 Jack AD57 adapter is quite good in quality, however, if you connect good headphones, you can achieve better sound quality.

The radio interface is designed in the same style as the music player. Nothing special can be said about the radio, memory for 20 radio stations, support for RDS, visual service (not supported in Russia), entering the frequency or name of the radio station manually. To work, you need to connect a headset, which acts as an antenna. As already noted, both the radio and the player are able to display information about their work on the screen in standby mode, and work in the background.

Nokia 5310 :: Review :: Gallery

The gallery is essentially file manager, here you can view the contents of the phone memory. There are 3 types of displaying the contents of folders, you can customize to your taste and color. It is possible to view the contents of a specific folder in a slideshow mode.

Nokia 5310 :: Review :: Organizer

The organizer consists of a set of applications such as Calendar, Tasks, Notes, Timer, Stopwatch. The calendar supports display by months and weeks, while in the latter case there is a breakdown of the day by hours. 5 types of events (meeting, call, birthday, note, reminder), flexible settings for repeating events, automatic deletion old events (configurable).

To-do list is a very familiar application for such tasks, there are priorities, time limits for completing tasks. With notes, everything is easier, you can enter arbitrary text, its length is limited to 3000 characters. The alarm clock is configured both for a single actuation and for the days of the week. Any arbitrary melody or turning on the radio (the headset must be connected) is set to the alarm signal.

Nokia 5310 :: Review :: Applications, memory

Initially, the phone has five preinstalled applications: Calculator, Converter, World clock, Download !, Opera Mini, Installer, Sensor, Wallpaper Creator, Yahoo! Go. The calculator combines as many as three: an ordinary adding machine, a scientific calculator, and a loan calculator that allows you to calculate any parameter based on the data of the remaining fields.

The converter allows you to convert units of length, volume, mass, temperature, etc., World clock displays the clocks of four default cities on one screen.

It is also worth noting the presence of applications Opera Mini, an alternative Internet browser, and Yahoo! Go, which is a standard search engine of the company of the same name. The presence of a search engine is certainly nice, but for a Russian user, Yahoo is not the best choice, it would be more appropriate to offer the user, for example, the same Google. Wallpaper Creator is a utility that allows you to create wallpaper for the screen by changing the color spectrum. The picture turns out to be abstract and rather poisonous in color))

Until a certain point, the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has been focused on providing multimedia capabilities of devices. This fact is most clearly seen by citing as an example a line of musical devices, which were positioned by the manufacturer as youth solutions.

Introduction

A prerequisite for the creation of multimedia lineup for the company was the opening of a store called "Nokia Music Store". There, for a small fee, the user could purchase the songs he liked. A little later, a service called "Nokia Internet Radio" began to operate. Thus, the company needed to “wind up” the popularity of the above platforms. And how could this be done? Is that only due to the maximum filling of the mobile phone market segments with special musical devices. And now "Nokia 5310" has become just the same one of such devices. The model hit the mainstream segment at the very beginning of sales. The interesting thing is that it happened just then.

Design

"Nokia Express Music 5310" was recognized by international experts as a very thin device, which not all models of the Finnish manufacturer could boast of. With a height of 104 and a width of 45 millimeters, the thickness was only 10. The weight of the device is 71 grams.

Reliability

"Nokia Express Music 5310" lies in the hand comfortably, without causing discomfort. It should be noted that the phone is securely in the palm of your hand, does not try to slip out. The device is practically not felt in the pocket, which makes it convenient to transport it.

Frame

The corners of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic are rounded. On the front panel, the edges are sloping. Thus, the device looks visually thinner than it actually is.

Materials and assembly

To find fault with the quality of materials produced by "Nokia 5310 XpressMusic" will not work. The phone is assembled quite well. No backlashes were found during the tests, nothing squeaks or makes noise.

Colors

Flanks on the sides of the screen are made in a sloping shape. In fact, they are nothing more than inserts made of metallic materials. Special multimedia keys are built into the flanks, which have become a feature of the corresponding model range. If we talk about colors, then they are made in blue or red. The plastic is quite pleasant to the touch. It is dark gray in color. The back panel of the phone is decorated with a special ornament consisting of dots. You can also notice the proprietary inscription "Nokia", which is made in the same color as the metal inserts on the sides of the screen.

Screen protection

"Nokia 5310", the display of which is covered with a protective glass, has a matrix made using TFT technology. A glossy insert is formed at the junction. There, in turn, a slot is located, which is necessary for the successful use of the earpiece speaker. There is also a light sensor that allows the device to assess the level of illumination at a given moment in time and change it automatically.

The diagonal of the screen is two inches. I remember that the 6300 and 6500 models were equipped with similar components. They are also quite good phones, but they were positioned precisely as beautiful design solutions. At the same time, the devices did not have any special functionality at all, what can we say about multimedia parameters. On this issue, it is the Nokia Express Music product line that specializes more, one of the devices of which we are considering today.

So, with a screen diagonal of two inches, the resolution is 240 by 320 pixels. Color rendition - up to 16 million shades, everything is normal with it. The picture on the screen is displayed in good quality, complaining about the brightness and saturation in the room is unlikely to work. It should be further noted that the viewing angles are good thanks to the TFT matrix. The situation is slightly worse in natural light. In the sun, the picture in some way burns out, but if it becomes more difficult to read the text from the screen, then it is only a little. In general, there is something to praise the engineers of the company for, that's for sure.

Keyboard

The Nokia 5310 phone is equipped with a keypad, which consists of a navigation key and four more buttons. Two of them are soft keys for which shortcuts can be assigned to the corresponding functions, from notebook before the alarm. Two more keys correspond to the functions of accepting and rejecting a voice call. The navigation button is average in size, downright golden mean. At the same time, the main unit is represented by small number keys, located quite tightly. They are located end-to-end. The buttons are clearly visible. It is possible to make mistakes when typing, but, as a rule, this happens quite rarely. There is a standard white backlight. It is distributed evenly throughout the keyboard block. The backlight works well in any light. It doesn't hurt your eyes.

Left and right faces

Here we have a small-sized connector to which you can connect a charger. On the opposite side, you can find a special rocker key for adjusting the volume level. With its help on the phone, you can turn off the sound altogether, as well as “wind up” it to the maximum. On the right side there is a special mount, into which a strap can be threaded for additional reliability. It will be worn on the arm or around the neck (depending on the type of the strap itself).

Bottom and top ends

At the bottom, we will not notice any elements and connectors. Interesting solution, after all, it was customary for the Finnish manufacturer to “decorate” their devices from below with a charging port. It looks like the company has decided to make an exception, and now we have exactly what we have. As for the rest, it should be noted that there is a standard connector on the top end intended for a wired stereo headset of 3.5 mm standard. There is also a MicroUSB port, to which a cable is connected for synchronization with personal computer or laptop. It also allows you to charge the device. The connector is covered with a special protective cap made of plastic materials.

Rear panel

On the back is the camera lens. It is located on top, and the module itself has a resolution of 2 megapixels. At the bottom of the device, we have special slots made to receive sound from polyphonic audio speakers. There are three of them here. At the same time, there are one fewer speakers. However, they are located quite close to each other, so there is clearly no need to talk about playing music with stereo sound effects. If we take off back cover, then we will find a battery under it, the capacity of which is 860 milliamps per hour. There is also a slot for installing a SIM card. There is a slot on the side that the user can embed external storage microSD format.

Conclusion and feedback

So, what verdict can you make on the phone based on the owners' feedback? Let's try to summarize and give an overall assessment of the device. The call is reproduced in 64-tones quality, with an average volume. In most situations, the volume is really not enough, the device turned out to be somehow quiet. On the street, the device is heard very, very badly, especially in conditions with increased background noise.

In the room, it will also be possible to miss an incoming call if the phone is located, for example, in a pocket. Moreover, it will not be difficult. Probably, such features can be immediately written down as disadvantages of the phone, but this will be the most significant disadvantage. If we talk about the quality of communication, then there are no complaints about the device in this regard. Cellular network works stably, does not abruptly disappear anywhere at the most inopportune moment. Which, in principle, is typical for devices of the corresponding generation.

The vibration alert is also average in intensity. In 50 percent of cases, it is not very well heard, but this way it shows itself pretty well. The device has become a good musical solution for wide audience... The device looks quite attractive, its dimensions are also satisfied. a large number of potential buyers. No wonder the devices of the line were presented as youth solutions, because for her it is a phone with a good set functional features... Nokia 5310 firmware can be found on the official website of the Finnish manufacturer.

In general, we can say that if you want increased functionality musically, then you should move on without getting hung up on this model. However, if the user needs exactly basic level, the "Nokia 5310", the characteristics of which were presented in this article, can really be the best purchase option.

Has won thousands of fans since the very announcement. Featuring a 16 million color QVGA display, dedicated music keys, stereo Bluetooth and FM radio, and a sleek, slim design, this compact phone has been praised by a huge number of users. In addition, the XpressMusic logo served as another reason to draw attention, especially from the music lovers. In other words, the Nokia XpressMusic 5310 is an amazingly thin and light phone with a lot of sound power.

It seems that Nokia has done decisively more than ever to conquer the market compact smartphones... The release of 5310 right after the 6500 Classic looks like an attempt to prove that making phones less than 10mm thick is not a problem for Finns. In addition, the Nokia XpressMusic 5310 seems to be trying to win the hearts of music lovers, which are many among the users of modern gadgets.

Thinking about its position in the mobile phone market, we can confidently say that the Nokia 5310 will face competition from the Ericsson W880 and Sony W890. Other potential rivals are ultra-thin Samsung phones with high quality sound.

Equipment

There is a fairly large number of bonuses offered in the bundle with Nokia XpressMusic 5310. In some cases, you may find a 2 GB MicroSD memory card in the package, but this strictly depends on the country of import, so it will not always be present.

Other things the user may find in a medium-sized box are a DC charger and a two-piece speakerphone (remote remote control with a 3.5mm audio jack and a pair of headphones). In addition, there is a MicroUSB cable.

A CD with the necessary software (drivers for Nokia 5310 XpressMusic) and the User's Guide round out the contents of the Nokia 5310 package.

Appearance

As already noted, Nokia 5310 is another slim device from a well-known Finnish manufacturer. It is only 9.9mm thick. Of course, this cannot be called a world record, but it is certainly a great achievement. The gadget fits perfectly into almost any pocket, and its other dimensions (height and width 103.8 and 44.7 mm, respectively) are also very compact. Plus, the weight - just 71 grams - ensures that it doesn't weigh down your pockets.

Mobile phone Nokia 5310 comes in two color options - red and blue, both of which look very stylish. As follows from user reviews, the blue version looks more solid.

However, regardless of the color version, the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic case includes aluminum panels on the front of the device, one of which contains the controls music player... The headphone jack and light sensor are located in the center of the top of the front panel. Below them is a 2-inch display.

Management and connections

To the left of the display are individual music keys used to control the music player or FM radio. As you can see from user reviews, they are both highly functional and easy to use.

The D-Pad can be seen at the bottom of the front of the phone. It is surrounded by two buttons - select and call, as well as a call end button. All of these controls are large and handy enough. The keyboard is also in the front and deserves special attention... A lever on the right side of the keyboard completes the list of phone controls on the front.

On the left side of the Nokia XpressMusic 5310, it's easy to see the charger plug, while the right side contains the volume buttons and a strap hole (to wear the gadget on your hand or around your neck).

The bottom of the phone is completely smooth and does not contain any operating elements. At the top of the device, in the left corner, is the power button. A standard 3.5mm audio jack is located on the opposite side, while a MicroUSB port is in between.

The only elements located on the back of the Nokia 5310 are a 2MP camera and three acoustic speakers. Unfortunately, there is no flash, which means that night photography is impossible.

Nokia 5310 XpressMusic: Battery and Memory Specifications

Opening the battery cover reveals the BL-4CT battery and SIM card slot. The 860 mAh battery allows the smartphone to work 300 hours of standby time or 5 hours and 20 minutes of talk time. Of course, these figures cannot be called record, but with them you will not be forced to carry a charger with you everywhere.

At first it may seem like the SIM card can be inserted / removed without removing the battery, but this is actually not possible due to the lock of the SIM holder.

Another place hidden under the battery cover is the memory card slot. Reviews claim that this is not very convenient because you will have to remove the cover every time you want to access your memory card.

Keyboard

The keypad of Nokia 5310 has wide buttons. This makes it easy to find keys on different lines, but it's almost impossible to do the same thing within the same line. This causes some orientation problems if you rely solely on touch. Nonetheless, the size of the keys really helps with a quick, error-free typing experience.

The backlighting is very uneven, but it works quite well. In the dark, the device will not cause any problems to use, but other gadgets look much more attractive in this regard.

The Nokia 5310's 2-inch QVGA display is capable of displaying up to 16 million colors. It pleasantly surprises with image quality and legibility in direct sunlight. On the other hand, according to user reviews, its small size can be called a significant drawback.

In addition, neither backlighting nor contrast is user-configurable. In the menu, you can only set the behavior of the phone in the power saving mode. Animated screensavers can be set by converting the screen saver to a displayed digital clock, the current date, and an icon indicating missed events, if any.

All of these readings are quite legible in any light. In the menu, you will also find a sleep mode option, with which the display turns off completely.

Telephony

As you might guess, the signal reception and call quality in the Nokia 5310 are of high quality. When speaking, audibility remains loud and clear at both ends. The vibration of the phone is moderate.

Interface

Uses Series 40 5th Edition. As it became known, Nokia developers decided to skip the 4th edition and went straight to the 5th from the 3rd. But as the user reviews say, navigation and phone control are almost the same as in the previous edition and are identical. The mobile phone offers a huge number of customizable options, but this is doable due to the complicated menu structure and navigation.

When the display is idle, by default it will render the pre-selected wallpaper plus signal strength, battery status and time (in the top bar). The operator's logo and date are located under the top panel. The lower bar is intended to describe the functions assigned to the central navigation and two context keys. The center navigation button opens the main menu, and the soft keys can be assigned a function of your choice. The font on the main display can be any color.

Active standby mode is activated if necessary. It consists of several elements that can be edited or moved according to the user's preference. By default, the top area is reserved for quick access to frequently used functions, indicated by the corresponding icons. The central square provides instant access to the music player. At the very bottom, events from the calendar for the current day are displayed.

The main menu of Nokia 5310 XpressMusic (factory firmware) can be visualized in one of four different ways: a grid of icons with or without captions, a list of items and tabs. While each has its own pros and cons, user reviews overwhelmingly recommend a typical grid layout with captions.

Multimedia

Without a doubt, the music player is one of the most important applications in the Nokia 5310. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that Nokia's developers have gone to great lengths to make it very good. The presented version does not have any major improvements in functionality, but some of the innovations are very nice and fit well with the overall design of the phone.

Dedicated music keys are also enhanced. They are used to control the music player and FM radio.

In addition, the control contains the typical functions of a music player, and also sorts songs by artist, album and genre. The player works with formats MP3, MIDI, WMA. Naturally, the A2DP profile is also supported, allowing you to listen to music over Bluetooth using wireless headphones.

If you don't like the headset that comes in its original packaging, you can easily replace it with a different one - the standard 3.5mm jack is present on both the phone and the remote.

According to reviews, Nokia smartphone 5310 XpressMusic, the price of which is about 3000 rubles today, is suitable for undemanding users who do not need modern features and "bells and whistles". As a device for communication and a compact player, this gadget has proven itself excellent.
