Kerio Connect is enterprise grade email. Kerio Connect is more than a mail server Kerio connect client login

Today, many companies are actively using email. And there is absolutely nothing surprising in this - this service allows you to quickly and cheaply exchange a wide variety of information. And therefore, it is used both for intracorporate communication of company employees and for their communication with the "outside world". However, a truly effective use of e-mail in a company is impossible without organizing its own mail system.

The key element of the corporate mail system is the mail server. It is this product that provides all the necessary functionality for the exchange of letters. There are many mail servers on the market today. However, we recommend that you pay attention to Kerio Connect, which has recently released a new, now the seventh version. Why is this product good? On the one hand, it has the richest features, and on the other hand, it is surprisingly easy to administer and use.

By the way, by calling Kerio Connect a mail server, we, frankly, have somewhat sinned against the truth. The point is, Kerio Connect is more than a mail server. Today its functionality is much wider. It allows you to organize not only a corporate mail system, but also to provide general access of company employees to the address book, calendars, task list, etc. That is, in fact, Kerio Connect can be considered a full-fledged replacement for Microsoft Exchange.

Configuring Kerio Connect

The core of the Kerio Connect product is a mail server. And therefore, setting it up, for the most part, comes down to just configuring the latter. Moreover, this process cannot be called particularly complicated. Any qualified system administrator can handle it without any difficulty.

The configuration process begins with setting up services that are responsible for working with various protocols (SMTP, POP3, IMAP, NNTP, etc.). After that, a list of enterprise domains is entered. Moreover, for each you can set your own parameters and restrictions on the use of e-mail. In particular, you can set the maximum size of outgoing messages, enable automatic deletion of old messages, set up forwarding, set up a user authorization system, etc. Particularly here we can note such a feature of the product in question as a distributed domain. What it is? A distributed domain is, in fact, a kind of cluster that unites several Kerio Connect servers. At the same time, a single information space is being created, which ensures collective work with the data of all remote branches of the company, regardless of their geographical location.

The next step is to configure the SMTP server, which is responsible for sending emails. It has two modes of operation. The first is direct, when Kerio Connect sends messages on its own, and the second is using relaying. When using it, letters are sent through an external SMTP server. In addition, you can enable or, conversely, disable user authentication, restrict relaying, define the parameters of the queue in which messages are placed, etc. After that, you need to set the parameters for connecting to the Internet. By default, the computer on which Kerio Connect is installed is considered to be permanently connected to the global network. However, if necessary, the administrator can change these settings, in particular, specify the RAS service and its startup parameters.

At the end of the system configuration, additional parameters can be set. So, for example, it is possible to enable the execution of certain actions according to a schedule, specify external mailboxes from which correspondence will be downloaded and distributed to corporate accounts, etc. The system has a large number of additional settings, a detailed description of which can be found in help system.

The final step in configuring the mail system is setting up the domain. This includes, first of all, user input. For each of them, you can set a list of mailboxes, set the rules for forwarding incoming mail to various addresses, set administration rights, set quotas for the volume of a mailbox and the number of objects in it. Additionally, you can set the rules for processing user messages. In particular, the administrator has the ability to allow sending and receiving mail only within his domain (to organize the internal mail system), limit the maximum size of outgoing messages, configure rules for deleting old letters, etc. For ease of configuration, all users can be distributed across separate groups, each of which has its own parameters.

If necessary, you can create mailings in Kerio Connect. Moreover, each mailing can be very fine-tuned. The administrator can set literally everything, starting with such "trifles" as the text of the welcome message sent to a new subscriber, and ending with such serious moments as the rights to self-subscribe to the newsletter and send letters to it, the appointment of moderators, etc.

Security in Kerio Connect

The term "security" as applied to a mail server is a complex concept with many different aspects. First, it is protection against external threats: spam and viruses. Secondly, protection from mail server spoofing. Third, preventing insider activities. And finally, fourthly - protection against loss of messages stored in the database as a result of various failures. All these aspects are extremely important, and they should not be neglected in any case. Fortunately, Kerio Connect has tools to protect against all of these threats.

To protect against spam, the product in question has a universal multi-component filter. When enabled, all messages (except for messages sent from trusted addresses) undergo several checks, during which they are assigned a digital score from 0 to 10. The higher it is, the more likely that the message being checked is spam. What kind of checks do the letters pass? First, there is a SpamAssassin filter based on a trainable Bayesian algorithm. Secondly, the system uses blacklists, and not only custom, but also public databases of spammers' IP addresses. Third, Kerio Connect implements a system of custom rules. With its help, you can set a number of conditions (some of the message fields are empty, non-empty, contains a certain substring, etc.), when fulfilled, the message will be considered or, conversely, not considered spam. In addition, the administrator can enable and configure a number of additional security tools, such as sender ID authentication, SPF flag, and SMTP greeting delay.

Kerio Connect uses the integrated Sophos subsystem to protect against viruses. Unless, of course, when purchasing a license, you chose the option with integrated antivirus (Kerio Connect can be sold without it). In addition to it, the administrator can connect one more of the anti-virus modules: Dr.Web, NOD32, etc. Naturally, this requires purchasing the appropriate product. In this case, checking of incoming correspondence can be carried out both by one subsystem, and by two at once (in turn). Additionally, the administrator can activate the attachment filter, which allows you to block messages with certain types of files or delete attachments and only then deliver the messages to the recipient.

Protection against spoofing of the mail server is carried out due to the ability to use secure communication protocols (secure POP3, SMTP, IMAP, etc.). Moreover, Kerio Connect implements the ability to create, export and import SSL certificates necessary for their work.

The product in question also has an archiving and backup system. Despite the similar names, these two operations are fundamentally different from each other. Archiving provides automatic saving of correspondence with the ability to view it in the future. It can be used to protect against insiders. If suspicions arise or in the course of investigating incidents, the manager or other responsible employee can view the letters sent and received by certain users. And backup means protection against loss of information. This operation creates backup copies of the message store and configuration of the entire system as a whole. As a result, if any failures occur, the administrator can quickly "reanimate" the mail system.

In addition, the product under review includes a number of additional security tools. Among them there are quite original, but certainly very useful features. So, for example, one cannot fail to note the Kerio Smart Wipe function. It allows you to wirelessly delete sensitive information from your mobile devices. This allows you to protect data from unauthorized access in case of loss or theft of a smartphone from a company employee.

Using the mail system

In terms of using corporate mail, Kerio Connect cannot but surprise with its versatility. The fact is that it can be used to build an absolutely cross-platform system. Firstly, this server can work with a large number of clients for different operating systems: Windows, Linux, Mac. Secondly, it implements the Kerio WebMail function. It allows you to organize access to mailboxes through a web interface. It is especially convenient for remote access for employees on a business trip. The web interface allows them to use corporate mail from anywhere in the world where there is internet.

Of course, one cannot fail to mention the support of the product in question for a large number of various smartphones running Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android, iOS and other mobile operating systems. This allows companies to organize mobile workstations, whose users can work with e-mail, receive information about new events in calendars, updates to address books, tasks, etc.

Summing up

After reviewing the process of configuring and using Kerio Connect, you can verify that its functionality truly meets the requirements of the most discerning corporate users. In addition, it is easy to implement and use. No highly specialized skills are required to install, configure and maintain the mail server. you can contact the partners of the 1Soft network.

Kerio Technologies, which has been on the market for over 15 years, has updated its line of Kerio software products this year. It recently released a new version of the Kerio Control firewall, and in May introduced a new version of the Kerio Connect mail server. Recall that Kerio Technologies produces several unique software solutions in the field of computer security that protect internal networks of companies from outside attacks, and also creates systems for electronic communications. Its products are aimed at medium and small businesses, but can also be used in large companies. The Kerio Connect mail server has been on the market for almost 15 years, and all this time it has invariably been in demand by many companies that want a flexible, convenient and at the same time secure system for exchanging mail messages. Over the long way, the Kerio Connect solution has been constantly updated, received many improvements and changes, which made it possible to speak of this product as a high-quality and at the same time affordable alternative to the Microsoft Exchange mail server. Since Kerio Connect was originally designed for small and medium-sized enterprises, it has very low hardware platform requirements, is easy to install, and fairly simple to administer. In this article we will look at its main functions and capabilities, but first we will briefly dwell on the cross-platform nature of this product.

Unlike Kerio Control, which is offered only as a version for virtualization systems or a version for installation on bare hardware, Kerio Connect mail server is also available as a Windows, Linux and Mac OS application. Due to the fact that it has a very convenient web interface, clients can connect to the server from almost any device that has access to the network. For virtualization systems based on VMware products, Kerio offers Kerio Connect as standard Virtual Appliance VMX and Virtual Appliance OVF packages. There is also a version for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems based on Debian and RPM packages (Red Hat, CentOS, SUSE, Debian, Ubuntu). All operating systems support both 32- and 64-bit architecture.

For virtualization systems, the SMP version is used with a standard set of functionality, but it has an operating system that does not require additional long-term configuration and maintenance. It can be easily installed on a dedicated virtual server without requiring an operating system to be installed. Note also that the OVF version of this software, in principle, can be installed on other virtualization systems. This approach allows a more flexible approach to the implementation of the company's network and abandon the use of solutions that often cannot be upgraded in hardware due to significant costs or extremely limited capabilities. In addition, the Kerio Connect mail server, using additional extensions, can be integrated with the Microsoft Active Directory and Apple Open Directory directory services, for which there are two additional applications: Kerio Open Directory Extension and Kerio Active Directory Extension. Thus, the administrator does not need to create new users in Kerio Connect, but can use the existing organization structure. Kerio Connect mail server can be integrated into most small and medium corporate networks, regardless of their structure.

It should be mentioned that in the new versions of Kerio Connect, it is possible to install the so-called Kerio Connect Multi-Server, which is necessary to create a distributed infrastructure based on Kerio Connect. With the release of the new version of Kerio Connect 8.5, Kerio Connect Multi-Server technology has become available for commercial use. It is now possible to upgrade from earlier versions of Kerio Connect. Users can share folders across all servers. Added monitoring using Zabbix server. It is now possible for servers to share the SpamAssassin database with my other. The Kerio Connect Multi-Server architecture allows load balancing across multiple servers, introducing additional security for mail server users, and combining multiple Kerio Connect servers into a single space for exchanging e-mail messages.

Kerio Connect Multi-Server includes services / servers such as:

  • Puppet master;
  • Directory server;
  • Back-end server;
  • Instant messaging server;
  • Front-end server;
  • Zabbix monitoring server.

Puppet master is responsible for storing the configuration of all services and servers, as well as updating them centrally in the future. Directory server is built on the basis of the open implementation of the LDAP directory access service - OpenLDAP and is responsible for storing the data of all servers in the infrastructure. The back-end server is a regular Kerio Connect mail server that will be included in the created infrastructure. Instant messaging server is required for instant messaging between clients using the XMPP protocol. Unlike other components, it is optional. The front-end server is responsible for handling all incoming client connections, distributing the load across multiple Back-end servers. Zabbix monitoring server is nothing more than a specially configured monitoring system for Kerio Connect servers based on the popular free software Zabbix. This component is also not required for creating the infrastructure, but in many cases it will be useful for the system administrator to collect operational information. You can read more about creating and configuring Kerio Connect Multi-Server on the Kerio website.

Improvements in Kerio Connect Client calendars

The new version of Kerio Connect 8.5 for Kerio Connect Client has added a calendar function "View agenda". Users can specify the time it takes to travel to attend a scheduled event. This is necessary to receive additional advance notice of an upcoming event. The ability to print the calendar in various views is now also available. In addition, the user can share events with other users, thereby providing a more coherent teamwork.

Pinning Kerio Connect Client to Windows taskbar

Internet Explorer browsers (version 9 and later) now have the ability to hard-pin the Kerio Connect Client tab to the taskbar for immediate access to its core capabilities. When receiving messages, the number of unread messages will be shown above this icon, which is very convenient when working.

Improved filtering and sorting of letters in Kerio Connect Client

The new version of Kerio Connect 8.5 has received updated rules for filtering and sorting letters, which have been changed in Kerio Connect Client for greater convenience.

Extended filtering by various parameters is now possible, as well as the function of creating rules using the Sieve filtering language.

Personalizing the login page in Kerio Connect Client

It cannot be overlooked that now administrators can create a custom login page for Kerio Connect Client by adding graphics, text and changing colors. For each mail domain, administrators can also customize a new logo for the Kerio Connect Client interface.

Exchange ActiveSync 14.1 and Microsoft Outlook 2013 support

Kerio Connect now supports Exchange ActiveSync version 14.1. This will allow users to sync their notes, use busy options when creating events, and see reply / forwarding marks for their messages. In addition, Kerio Connect now allows you to connect Exchange ActiveSync accounts in Microsoft Outlook 2013. However, this implementation has a number of limitations.

In conclusion, we note that in the new version of Kerio Connect 8.5, several important security improvements have been made. Thus, the OpenSSL library has been updated to version 1.0.1m. Server-side self-signed SSL certificates and certificate signing requests generated by the server are now signed with a signature generated using the SHA-256 algorithm. This is necessary to increase the confidence of some third-party Internet browsers when evaluating the security of an SSL certificate.

conclusions

Kerio Technologies continues to enhance its popular Kerio Connect mail server. The release of the next version always brings something new, and since the company follows modern market trends, almost all changes become in demand and useful for users and administrators. Overall, Kerio Connect is an excellent alternative to Microsoft Exchange that is widely recognized and well established in the market. Kerio Connect is low maintenance and meets the needs of small and midsize businesses with unrivaled deployment flexibility and support for a wide range of mobile devices.

Today, many companies are actively using email. And this is absolutely nothing surprising - it is software allows you to quickly and cheaply exchange a wide variety of information. And therefore, it is used both for intracorporate communication of company employees and for their communication with the "outside world". However, a truly effective use of e-mail in a company is impossible without organizing its own mail system.

The key element of the corporate mail system is mail server... It is this product that provides all the necessary functionality for the exchange of letters. There are many products on the market today mail servers... However, we recommend paying attention to the one that recently released a new, now the seventh version. Why is this product good? On the one hand, it has the richest features, and on the other hand, it is surprisingly easy to administer and use.

By the way, calling Kerio Connect Mail Server, frankly speaking, we have sinned somewhat against the truth. The point is that - more than mail server... Today its functionality is much wider. It allows you to organize not only corporate postal system, but also to provide general access of company employees to the address book, calendars, list of tasks, etc. That is, in fact, it can be considered a full-fledged replacement for Microsoft Exchange.

Configuring Kerio Connect

The basis of the product is mail server...

Moreover, for each, you can set your own parameters and restrictions on the use of e-mail. In particular, you can set the maximum size of outgoing messages, enable automatic deletion of old messages, set up forwarding, set up a user authorization system, etc. Particularly here we can note the possibility of the product in question as a distributed domain. What it is? A distributed domain is, in fact, a kind of cluster that unites several servers. At the same time, a single information space is being created, which ensures collective work with the data of all remote branches of the company, regardless of their geographical location.

The next step is to configure the SMTP server, which is responsible for sending emails. It has two modes of operation. The first one is direct, when it sends messages on its own, and the second one is using relaying. When using it, letters are sent through an external SMTP server. In addition, you can enable or, conversely, disable user authentication, restrict relaying, define the parameters of the queue in which messages are placed to send, etc. After that, you need to set the parameters for connecting to the Internet. By default, it is assumed that the computer on which it is installed is permanently connected to the global network. However, if necessary, the administrator can change these settings, in particular, specify the RAS service and its startup parameters.

At the end of the system configuration, additional parameters can be set. So, for example, it is possible to enable the execution of certain actions on a schedule, specify external mailboxes from which correspondence will be downloaded and distributed to corporate accounts, etc. The system implements a large number of additional settings, a detailed description of which can be found in the help system.

The final stage of configuration postal system is the domain setting. This includes, first of all, user input. For each of them, you can set a list of mailboxes, set the rules for forwarding incoming mail to various addresses, set administration rights, set quotas for the volume of a mailbox and the number of objects in it. Additionally, you can set the rules for processing user messages. In particular, the administrator has the ability to allow sending and receiving mail only within his domain (to organize the internal mail system), limit the maximum size of an outgoing message, configure rules for deleting old letters, etc. For ease of configuration, all users can be divided into separate groups, each of which has its own parameters.

If necessary, you can create mailings.

The term "security" in relation to mail server Is a complex concept consisting of many different aspects. First, it is protection against external threats: spam and viruses. Secondly, protection from mail server spoofing. Third, preventing insider activities. And finally, fourthly - protection against loss of messages stored in the database as a result of various failures. All these aspects are extremely important, and they should not be neglected in any case. Fortunately, there are tools to protect against all of these threats.

Thirdly, a system of custom rules is implemented. With its help, you can set a number of conditions (some of the message fields are empty, non-empty, contains a certain substring, etc.), when fulfilled, the message will be considered or, conversely, not considered spam. In addition, the administrator can enable and configure a number of additional security tools, for example, sender ID authentication, SPF flag, and SMTP greeting delay.

An integrated Sophos subsystem is used to protect against viruses. Unless, of course, when purchasing a license, you chose the option with integrated antivirus (it can be sold without it).

Protection against spoofing of the mail server is carried out due to the possibility of using secure communication protocols (secure POP3, SMTP, IMAP, etc.). Moreover, the ability to create, export and import the SSL certificates necessary for their work is implemented.

So, for example, one cannot fail to note the function Kerio Smart Wipe. It allows you to wirelessly delete sensitive information from your mobile devices. This allows you to protect data from unauthorized access in case of loss or theft of a smartphone from a company employee.

Using the mail system

In terms of using corporate e-mail, one cannot but surprise with its versatility. The fact is that it can be used to build an absolutely cross-platform system. Firstly, this server can work with a large number of clients for different operating systems: Windows, Linux, Mac. Secondly, it implements the function Kerio WebMail. It allows you to organize access to mailboxes through a web interface. It is especially convenient for remote access for employees on a business trip. The web interface allows them to use corporate mail from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection.

Summing up

After reviewing the process of setting up and using the product, you can ensure that its functionality really meets the requirements of the most discerning corporate users. Moreover, it is easy to implement and use. No highly specialized skills are required to install, configure and maintain the mail server. you can contact the partners of the 1Soft network.

IMAP configuration

To set up IMAP, follow these steps:

As an example, let's say your email address is [email protected]site, and your Kerio Connect server is located at mail.site
These values \u200b\u200bshould be replaced with your own email address and the location of your Kerio Connect server.

1.From the main screen, tap the "Tools" button and then tap the "Mail" icon.

2. Enter your entire email address (e.g. [email protected]website), and in the second field, enter the password associated with your email account.

3. Click the "Default Settings" button and select "IMAP".

Username - enter your email address (for example, [email protected]website ). If there is one mail domain on the server, then only the name before the “@” sign is sufficient - master.
Password. Enter the password associated with your email account.
IMAP server - enter the name of the incoming mail server: mail.site
Port. Port number: 993

4. On the Outgoing Server Settings screen, enter the following information in the fields:
SMTP Server - Enter the name of the outgoing mail server. We have the same server as for the incoming one: mail.site
Port. Port number: 465
