What’s much sadder is that Xiaomi chose a hopelessly outdated standard. For example, Meizu POP comes with a more practical USB Type-C. I have no doubt that Xiaomi fans will go berserk at these words and say that I got to the bottom of it from scratch: the connector format does not affect the sound and convenience of the headphones. I won’t argue, it’s just strange, especially since many new Xiaomi smartphones this year we received Type-C. And in general, if you look at the market, Type-C is finally becoming a standard.

I'll put it on and listen

The headphones are quite large, not small, but not very healthy either. In size they are comparable to the same Meizu POP, but I liked the Meizu headphones better in shape. They are somehow more elegant, perhaps, more interesting looking. The design of Xiaomi AirDots did not evoke any emotions for me, they are ordinary headphones, but some people did not like them at all, especially girls. First of all, the sizes are confusing - they are noticeable in the ear and look so-so. But this is completely subjective, I think. When you listen to music, the design of the headphones is the tenth thing, much more important is how they sit in the ear and how they feel.

Xiaomi AirDots are good with all this: they are light, almost weightless, fit tightly and do not fall out when you actively twist and turn your head or just run along the path.

Control

The controls are simple: you can pause it either by touching the headphone body, or switch tracks and change the volume on the screen of your phone, or whatever you connected the AirDots to.

The gestures are simple: one touch pauses, two touches go to a new track, three touches go back a step. Also in standby mode, double tapping launches the voice assistant, and you can also answer calls by touching the headphones. Or cancel an incoming call with two taps. However, you won’t be able to change the volume if you don’t have a phone in your hands. It’s the same with switching tracks, it’s inconvenient.

Music

AirDots can’t pause music when you take the earphone out of your ear; these aren’t AirPods. Therefore, you have to touch the earphone with your finger to pause playback. Alternatively, you can control it from your phone, because pointing your finger into the earphone is not always convenient. For example, when you just want to adjust the earphone, you can accidentally touch the case and pause the song.

I didn’t particularly like the sound, because I’m used to my Sony SBH90C, which play much more interestingly. But they also cost significantly more, about three to four times.

In reality, these are very inexpensive headphones, and it’s difficult to find something with better audio for that kind of money. I would even say it is impossible. Xiaomi AirDots have a large volume reserve, they play neutrally: if the composition has a lot of bass, you will feel it. And if it’s not there, then you’ll have to add lows with an equalizer. The headphones are loud, they play “hoarsely”, I want to make the sound clearer, but here it is “muffled”. In general, it’s difficult to criticize headphones for this kind of money. If they cost 100–150 dollars, one could find fault with the sound, but these are very cheap and sound normal.

Connection

To connect headphones you need to do the following. You put the headphones in the case, then take them out of it, start searching for a new Bluetooth device on your phone, find AirDots and connect. In principle, the procedure is not much different from the process of searching for any other headphones. But these are not AirPods, which connect easier and faster, as if by waving a magic wand. Here the headphones are connected to each other, you get such a pair, and then it establishes a connection with the phone. But AirPods work differently: each earphone communicates independently.

AirDots keep a good connection, although there are periodic glitches: when you listen to music, switch to the next track, and the headphones start stuttering out of the blue. Then you can simply switch to the next song.

If you watch videos on YouTube, there is also desynchronization of sound, a periodic phenomenon for Bluetooth headphones. How to overcome it? You can try resetting the headphones, but this doesn’t always help, so it’s easier to get used to it and not pay attention to it.

Working hours

The charging case is small in size and surprisingly lightweight. If together with AirPods we get a small but weighty object, and this automatically gives the feeling of a solid, high-quality thing, then with Xiaomi the situation is different. It's simple and inexpensive plastic, the lid opens and closes without a pleasant click, and there's a minimum of attention to detail. Moreover, in the case of the already mentioned Meizu POP, the situation is different, because the headphones of the main competitor come with a better-quality case.

The case has a built-in battery with a capacity of 350 mAh - this is enough for three full recharges of the headphones with a reserve. Each earphone contains a tiny 40 mAh battery. AirDots work for about 3–3.5 hours if you listen to music at 70% maximum volume. I won’t say that it’s a lot, by the standards of wireless headphones of this format this is the usual result, but 5 or 6 hours of work is already the ceiling for small devices.

Charging the case takes almost two hours, surprisingly long for a battery with such a small capacity. The headphones themselves charge in about 40 minutes, fast enough to keep you connected to music throughout the day.

How much do Xiaomi AirDots cost?

The headphones themselves are quite cheap - at the time of the announcement, the price of Xiaomi AirDots was $30. At the same time, it is extremely difficult to buy them for this money now, at the end of 2018.

In Moscow, headphones are resold for 4.5–5 thousand rubles, the little thing is in high demand and, as usual, sells out with a bang.

And what else?

There are a lot of wireless headphones on sale, but there are very few inexpensive wireless ones, the choice is very meager. This is why Xiaomi AirDots are flying apart. There are no problems with conversations. The interlocutors hear the voice clearly. There is a noise reduction system. The volume is good. You can also listen to music in the Xiaomi Mi Bluetooth headset, but due to the lack of a pair, there will be no stereo and you will hear everything that is happening around.

It feels like I bought some “Super Bass Boost” headphones from the transition for 2 kopecks. You can’t pick them up and not hear a crunch, a squeak, or some other damn thing. The few reviews and reviews on YouTube are either silent about this, or I was just unlucky. Weighs 235 grams. Dimensions: 199 * 82 * 255 mm.

To extend the headband, a mechanism with a steel plate at the base and eight positions, including the original one, is used. It extends until it clicks, but the necessary fixation in the desired position is not ensured. You just need to remove the headphones from your head a little faster than usual, and the position on one side will shift.

On the outside of the cups there is the same perforated pattern as on Mi Comfort.


On the right “ear” the only interesting thing is an additional microphone for noise reduction.


All controls are located on the left cup.


Half of them are hidden behind a carelessly pasted piece of paper with operating instructions. The panel is not touch sensitive. The decorative insert presses on the button hidden inside the cup. The pressure-sensitive zone starts from the center of this insert and reaches the very bottom, where it works better than anything else.

The entire inside of the earcup is movable, so, in theory, the headphones should fit comfortably on heads of different sizes and shapes.



The ear pads are soft and removable. I have not noticed any special memory effect yet. Just minor creases.

The “case” is made of PU leather.


And the filler is something like ordinary foam rubber.


The ear pads can be removed and put on without any problems. The speaker is covered with a sandwich made of mesh fabric and foam rubber. L/R marks are present. By the way, it is not necessary to follow the recommendations.




The filling of the cups is held in place by four small screws. It was not possible to get to the board without ripping out the case.




There is a volume rocker at the bottom of the left cup.


And on the right there is a microUSB port for charging and the main microphone. Xiaomi installed Type C in their razor, and a microUSB headset in BT. L - logic. There is also no 3.5 mm mini jack. If something happens, there will be no wired backup option. I only took it for home use, so it doesn't matter to me.


Convenience during prolonged use was perhaps the main criterion, because from my wired ones Marshall Major 2 there was no longer any living space left on my head. Since the design of the subject is a copy of Comfort's, and in all reviews their main advantage was called convenience, I was sure in advance that I would not go wrong. And I did not go wrong. They sit very comfortably on the head. They do not put pressure either on top or in the ears. It fits well too . When turning sharply, my ears do not fall off. My ears are hidden in the ear pads by about 80 percent. After 2 hours of continuous use in a cool room, my ears did not sweat. I did not wear them outside, because the headphones stick out on the sides by ~4.2. cm.

Sound, autonomy

The headphones are equipped with a CSR8645 audio module with aptX support and 40 mm dynamic drivers. Bluetooth version 4.1. Supported BT profiles: HFP, HSP, A2DP, AVRCP. Defined as Mi Bluetooth Headphones. Each switching on, switching off, unlinking and linking to the source will be accompanied by an annoying set of words in Chinese. It is possible to connect to two sources simultaneously.


Microphone. There are no problems at all with talking through the subject. It's a pleasure to use as a headset for some Skype. Extraneous noise No. The interlocutor and I can hear the interlocutor without problems. There is no need to ask again. Perhaps on a noisy street the picture will be different.
Latency when watching videos. On the PC & Orico BTA-403 with BT 4.1, on the PC & BlitzWolf BW-BR4 with BT 5.0 and on the OnePlus 6 also with BT 5.0 there is no out of sync.
Signal quality. Up to 10 meters stated. In an apartment of 50 m², no matter how many walls you go into, there are no stutters, breaks or other interruptions. When you cover the cups with your palms, the playback does not pause either. The location of the source also does not affect anything in my case.
Noise insulation. There is no need to talk about complete sound insulation in these headphones, but minimal amount eliminates unnecessary minor sounds. Those around you can hear the music you listen to a little.
Sound. It’s worth noting right away that if your playlist includes recordings with a bitrate below 320kbps and you listen at a volume above average on a source without aptX support, your ears will start bleeding with these headphones. In all other cases, not everything is so bad. On high-quality recordings, the difference between “with aptX” and “without aptX” is not amazing, but it makes the sound somewhat more detailed, more voluminous and slightly adds expressiveness to the low frequencies. In complex compositions with many different instruments at maximum volume, the sound becomes harsh, high and mid frequencies mix into a mess. In this case, you cannot do without edits in the equalizer. The most acceptable volume level for me, at which some frequency balance is still maintained, is around 85%, which is quite enough. But the emphasis is still on the high ones. By moderating their ardor, a more balanced picture emerges. Low frequencies by default, they are not expressive enough and do not reveal their full potential. By using any available “improvers,” a completely different, noticeable and rich bass appears. Doesn't work on other frequencies. The most profitable genres for these headphones are electronic, pop and maybe hip-hop. Light rock will also be overcooked, but something like Five Finger Death Punch - Sham Pain sounds dirty and no adjustments can fix it. In short, with heavy music you cannot get clarity and detail on Mi Bluetooth Headphones. The above-mentioned Marshalls, for example, reproduce the same song without any roughness at all.
Autonomy. Stores indicate in the description that the subject has a 400 mAh battery installed, but there is not a word about this on the packaging itself or in the instructions. But there is a note about charging time - 2.5 hours. The current supply (up to 0.2A) stopped after 1:19 at ~260 mAh, but the LED went out after ~1:47. The “poured” amount did not increase during this half hour. It is not clear what causes this difference in charging time. The stated standby time is 200 hours. As they say, it’s a strong statement, of course I won’t check it. My copy, with continuous music playback at maximum volume, lasted 9 hours 45 minutes, which is 15 minutes less than promised. At 50% volume, the headphones showed excellent results - 19 hours and 50 minutes.

Conclusion

What can I say in the end? The build quality was disappointing. Some of the cheapest plastic Philips, which I bought about 15 years ago, were free of such problems. If the reviews on the Internet really don’t deceive, then it’s just my copy that was unsuccessful. I’m not particularly aware of the favorites in terms of autonomy among similar headphones, but I consider 10 hours at maximum volume and 20 at medium volume a very decent indicator. I am also pleased with the ergonomics, high-quality microphone and aptX support. As for the sound, it costs about 40 bucks, and for $65-70 there are better options.

Design, construction

I had the opportunity to get acquainted with one of these things. This is Xiaomi Mi Bluetooth Headset, wireless headset. A segment that is now half-forgotten, where nothing will surprise anyone, and manufacturers are now competing more on price than on functionality - the new products of 2015 are very similar to the new products of 2010. Yes, now you can listen to stereo in one ear, the operating time has increased slightly, but otherwise the products have not changed. There is no such significant difference as, say, Samsung phone 2010 model and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Only five years, but the difference in opportunities is colossal. I’m saying all this to mean that Xiaomi could have safely not made such a product as a headset at all – but they did. They did it because they could. Let's see what happened.

The packaging is good, the box is made of white plastic, the headset is snow-white, matte, fingerprints are invisible. On the front there is a microUSB connector, on the back there is a single button, it is responsible for accepting and rejecting calls, and dialing the last number. When you turn on the device for the first time, it automatically goes into pairing mode, for once you have to see iPhone settings hieroglyphs. There were no problems with the connection. There is a miniature indicator light on the front of the headset, it would be better to move it to the back.

Interestingly, the multifunction button also starts playing a track and works with any programs on the iPhone - both starts and pauses. The A2DP profile is supported, the sound quality is good, you can easily listen to music or podcasts in one ear. Additional features include connecting two smartphones simultaneously.

The headset uses the CSR 8610 chip, brief characteristics are as follows:

You can be heard quite well, but it’s as if you are holding the phone a little farther from your mouth. This is all due to the design, the microphone is located far from the lips. In a quiet room you can communicate without raising your voice, but as soon as there is noise, you need to switch to your smartphone.

The stated operating time is 5 hours of talk time; while charging, the device is disconnected from the smartphone.

In terms of our money, the headset costs about 800 rubles, which is not bad. The advantages of the device include good design, A2DP support, miniature size and weight. Voice quality is average. And now you look, there seem to be a lot of competitors, but it’s either completely noname, or old Nokia, or no A2DP and generally some kind of ancient horror. Therefore (oddly enough) for the money the product is quite good.
