Samsung Galaxy S5 Active vs Galaxy S5: which should you buy? Samsung Galaxy S5 Active - Specifications Mobile phone samsung galaxy s5 active

Samsung this year never ceases to delight fans of rugged smartphones. In spite of a large number of rumors and all kinds of "leaks" of information, after the release, certified according to the IP67 standard, many were sure that the manufacturer would abandon the "active" series. But no, Samsung Galaxy The S5 Active has already gone on sale in the US.

In addition, it is encouraging that the South Koreans have abandoned the old tradition and equipped the "active" model with an advanced flagship "stuffing". As a result, users can purchase, perhaps, the most powerful smartphone compliant with military MIL-STD-810G standard and civilian IP67. Among the main shortcomings of the S5 Active - it is sold so far only for customers of the American operator AT & T, and the prospect of global sales has not yet been announced.

Complete set and design

Package Included:

  • Battery with a capacity of 2800 mAh;
  • Charger;
  • USB cable;
  • Stereo headset;
  • User manual and other documentation.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is, of course, very similar to, but, at the same time, quite original. The smartphone is made in a traditional candy bar form factor with slightly rounded corners. But thanks to the rubber pads, the device is no longer very reminiscent of ordinary civilian models.

Although its design absolutely does not exclude the possibility of using it as an everyday smartphone in an urban environment.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is, of course, very similar to the flagship S5, but, at the same time, quite original

The Galaxy S5 Active is slightly larger and heavier than the regular S5 (3 millimeters longer, 1 millimeter thicker, 25 grams heavier), almost equal to, for example, or. True, the smartphone remains surprisingly thin, surpassing even the thinnest protected model in this indicator.

Traditionally, Active received three mechanical control buttons, in theory, allowing you to use the device with wet hands. They were about the same. In addition, the Galaxy S5 Active has a separate button for working with applications from the "travel kit", or rather the Activity Zone (center of activities).

Samsung's new "active" model comes in three color options - titanium gray, camouflage green and ruby red.

As already mentioned, Samsung has broken the established tradition and the new Active has such an advanced "stuffing" as flagship Galaxy S5. The phone uses a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8974AC (Snapdragon 801) 2.5GHz chipset - the fastest Qualcomm chipset on this moment... Plus 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of permanent memory, expandable by 128 GB. And, if in the flagship, these characteristics, frankly, are not very striking, but for the "active" series the indicators are very impressive. Most of the protected models are inferior to the S5 Active, although some of them can compete (, or).

As already mentioned, Samsung has broken the established tradition and the new Active has the same advanced "stuffing" as the flagship Galaxy S5.

The device can operate in 2G (GSM / GPRS / EDGE), 3G (WCDMA 850/2100), 4G (LTE 700/850/1700/1800/1900/2100/2600) networks on Micro-SIM. Support for two SIM-cards is not provided.

The smartphone is equipped with a 2800 mAh lithium-polymer battery - not bad, but lower than most modern rugged models. The same or a 3000 mAh battery, and a 4200 mAh battery. The S5 manufacturer promises about 6-7 hours of Internet use, 10 hours of talks on 3G networks and about 260 of waiting time. Not bad too, but not the highest rates.

Among other things, the S5 Active also received a flagship display - it is not only large (5.1 inches - only larger), but also has a high resolution 1920x1080 pixels with a density of 432 ppi. The image quality is very high, which can only be competed with.

Protection level

Many expected that with the S5 Active Samsung would step over the new frontier and certify the smartphone to the IP68 standard, but the expectation did not come true. Like the flagship, the "active" model complies with IP67 - the smartphone can not only successfully resist the ingress of dust and moisture, but also withstand a half-hour immersion to a meter depth. In addition, the device also meets the military standard MIL-STD 810G - it is not afraid of shocks and drops, extreme changes in temperature and pressure, vibration and exposure to chemicals. Thanks to this, the smartphone caught up with such leaders as, or.

S5 Active is made of impact-resistant plastic, porous in appearance. Unlike the usual model, it has rubber pads located on the top and bottom edges and partially covering the sides of the device. The side edges have a nice grooved finish, which should provide a secure grip when using the phone with wet hands. Thanks to this solution, the device is very similar to one of the most stylish rugged smartphones.

The battery cover is very thin and bends very easily. Plastic latches are used to fix it. The joints between the lid and the body are hidden by part of the rubber pads that protrude onto the rear panel. The rubber cap covers only the microUSB port, the headphone jack is traditionally not covered, which, according to the manufacturer, does not affect the overall level of tightness. True, this, over time, can lead to oxidation of the contacts.

Samsung officially announces that the S5 Active is equipped with 3rd generation Gorilla Glass, which not only provides greater protection against scratches and chips, but also minimally impacts conductivity and thus usability.

Overall, the S5 Active is the first truly "active" (protected) model in the series. Galaxy latest years. The same one was only moisture / dust resistant, but no more.

Software and interface

Galaxy S5 Active runs on the platform latest version Android 4.4. The menus and interface are simple and intuitive, like other devices on this operating system.

To implement wireless communications smartphone has bluetooth modules and Wi-Fi, as well as a newfangled Near Field Communication (NFC) module. In addition, the device provides access to 3G and 4G Internet.

Unlike the flagship S5, the model does not have a fingerprint sensor, but it has got useful "travel" applications for a protected smartphone - a barometer, a pedometer and others.

Navigation

The device is equipped with an autonomous GPS-module with support for A-GPS technology, which significantly reduces the start-up time after a long break. The large 5.1-inch display makes the smartphone an excellent car navigator.

Camera

The camera of the S5 Active also remains the flagship - the main one with a resolution of 16 megapixels on the ISOCELL matrix allows you to take pictures at 3456x4608 pixels (which, by the way, is for some reason lower than that of the regular S5) and shoot Ultra HD videos (4K at 30 frames / s) and Full HD (1080p @ 60fps). In addition, the "active" model claims the ability to shoot underwater.

Front-camera has a more familiar resolution of 2 megapixels - the average among protected smartphones.

Pros:

  • High level of security;
  • Powerful processor;
  • Large amount of RAM;
  • Large bright display;
  • Powerful camera;
  • NFC module.

Minuses:

  • Very high cost;
  • Micro-SIM;
  • No support for two SIM cards;
  • Not the highest autonomy;
  • Not for sale in the CIS;
  • A bit boring design.

Who is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active phone for?

This year Samsung is changing the established traditions - not only is the company's flagship certified according to the IP67 standard, but also the Active models have received no less advanced "stuffing". As a result, users received the first truly protected Samsung smartphone which, among other things, has impressive technical specifications, a large bright display and a powerful camera. However, the device has several drawbacks. Firstly, in an attempt to preserve the mass-dimensional characteristics that are optimal for the average buyer, the manufacturer abandoned thicker plastic and rubber pads, and this, in turn, somewhat reduces the real shock resistance of the device. In addition, the new Galaxy S5 Active not only has a rather high cost, but is not yet sold outside the United States.

Not being an ardent fan Samsung, today, however, is ready to confess to her, albeit short-term, but love. If I'm not mistaken, Samsung is the only rugged smartphone manufacturer whose technical specifications are often equal to flagship ones or are so. Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the other big names I know stuff their shockproof and waterproof gadgets with more than budget stuffing. I do not take into account the mass of Chinese super-duper unkillable phones. Kyocera and Casio come to mind with their Kyocera Brigadier and Casio G "zOne CA201L. Today, as you already understood, in my Samsung review Galaxy Active, this time with the S6 index.

Koreans decided to make S6 Active available only in the North American market, offering it exclusively to subscribers cellular operator AT&T. Galaxy S6 Active was presented immediately after the release of the company's flagship, Samsung models Galaxy S6.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active Docomo SC-02G

It should be noted that Samsung has no plans for the release of this model in other markets yet. Well, or, let's say, I personally do not know anything about them. What is the reason for this approach to the choice of the distribution area of a really interesting phone, I do not understand. Take the same Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, which in its time, in addition to the USA, was also released in Japan by the NTT Docomo operator. The model received the Docomo SC-02G index.

Today's review will be more exploratory than exploratory. I will not test the phone for shock resistance or floodability. Let someone else do it for me. For me, as a person who rarely holds Samsung smartphones in my hands, it was interesting to know what, in principle, a modern shock-resistant flagship is, of which there are not so many around. In some places, I will somehow compare it with Japanese smartphones, which in my life take the first place in my life.

The SGS6 Active has three color options: Camo Blue, Camo White and Gray. I have just an option in a neutral gray case, which in fact is closer to black, but not the essence.

Specifications

Those who follow Samsung's activities are probably aware that when creating an anti-vandal Galaxy S Active series, Koreans take their flagship models... 99% of the S6 Active received the internal equipment of its older brother Galaxy S6, not forgetting about the corresponding indestructible component:

  • Operating System: Android 5.0.2 Lollipop
  • Standards support: 4G / 4G-LTE / 3G / EDGE / GPRS / GSM
  • Processor: 4 * 2.1 Ghz / 4 * 1.5 Ghz, eight-core, Samsung Exynos 7420, 64-bit
  • RAM: 3 Gb
  • ROM: 32 Gb, UFS 2.0
  • Display: 5.1 ", Quad HD, 2560x1440 pix, Super AMOLED, 577ppi, 16 million colors, Corning Gorilla Glass 4
  • Main camera: 16 Mpix, CMOS, 4K video recording, autofocus, up to 120 fps, LED flash
  • Front camera: 5 Mpix, CMOS
  • Support for memory cards: microSDXC up to 256 Gb
  • GPS / GLONASS
  • Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac, 5Ghz
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • IR port
  • Headphone jack 3.5 mm
  • HDMI connector (via MHL adapter)
  • Protection in accordance with the US military standard MIL-STD-810G, IP68
  • Battery: Li-Ion, 3500 mAh, non-removable
  • Size: 146.9x73.6x8.8 mm
  • Weight: 150 g

Today, we can say with confidence that Koreans dictate fashion to the whole world, without ceasing to compete with their competitors. But this is a completely different topic.

Equipment

Here's a good example of how Korean marketing differs from Japanese marketing. Unlike stingy Japanese manufacturers, which in 100 cases out of 100 do not complete their phones with a charger, in the box with the Galaxy S6 Active, in addition to short instructions, promo materials and AT&T SIM cards can be found USB cable and AC adapter. Accessories from the "must have" category.

The Japanese are sure that you already use your smartphone. Therefore to your new phone will fit charging from the previous device. Why multiply the same cables? There is undoubtedly a share of practicality in this. However, in general, this approach to sales is not clear to our layman.

First impressions. Design

The first feeling that I experienced when I took the phone in my hand was unusually large dimensions: 147x73 mm. Visually, the presence of a heap of plastic around the 5.1-inch display makes the phone massive. However, it is this plastic with its protruding bumpers at the corners that is designed to protect the phone from negative consequences during a fall. I will compare the Galaxy S6 Active with my main smartphone at the moment Sharp aquos Zeta Docomo SH-01G. The relatively frameless design of Aquos Zeta, which even received a special brand name EDGEST, has long taught me that a phone with big screen(5.5 ") can be relatively comfortable when used with one hand. Even after more than three days of testing, I still could not get used to the dimensions of Samsung. It was unusual to reach the top of the screen with my thumb. third party applications allowing you to shrink the screen to its optimal size, but out of the box the S6 Active offered a minimum level of convenience in day-to-day use. I think a 4.5-4.7-inch screen would be ideal here.

It is comfortable to hold the phone in your hand. The plastic of the sides is not glossy, which allows the fingers to cling confidently to the case. The thickness was pleasantly surprised - only 8.8 millimeters. At the same time, it is installed inside non-removable battery 3500 mAh, which is 700 mAh more than the same S5 Active. The cruising time of the smartphone personally did not exceed two and a half days. I, of course, take into account the fact that the phone was new.

Externally, the Galaxy S6 Active reminded me of the same S5 Active. V new version somewhere they sawed off something, somewhere they replaced something or changed places. In general, they did not substantially comb their hair. Name the S6 design Active new I would not. Rather, there is face and backlifting. However, you must admit that one does not dare to call such an exterior boring either.

The proprietary Super Amoled display is protected by the current version of Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The picture with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels pleases the eye with its clarity for the first minutes. Then, in everyday life, you simply do not pay attention to this marketing ploy. We have already seen this with Fujitsu Arrows NX Docomo F-02G. The race for the number of pixels in display resolution after fullHD, in my personal opinion, has already lost its relevance.

Thanks to Super Amoled technology, the image looks very attractive. However, the discrepancy between the real picture and what the owner of modern Samsung sees on the phone screen (out of the box) can later be a little upsetting. This is especially noticeable when you look at the results of the camera. However, Samsung traditionally offers a choice of several color display modes.

The SGS6 Active interface is not much different from the classic Galaxy S6. Added only branded applications AT&T. The device can be completely Russified by the corresponding flashing. Fortunately, Samsung is a better known and, accordingly, more often hacked brand.

The Galaxy S6 Active also lets you update your system outside of your home network.

Traditionally, Samsung has paid Special attention the topic of health and active pastime.

AT&T apps are collected in separate folder so as not to mix with the general assortment of preinstalled programs.

The device is capable of working in Russian 4G networks. When you turn on the phone with installed SIM card any Russian operator settings mobile internet and MMS are loaded automatically. There is no need to manually create access points (APNs), as is the case with Japanese smartphones.

By default, the phone is tied to the AT&T carrier network. You can unlock Samsung Galaxy S6 Active by requesting a code from the operator or using paid third-party services, of which there are plenty on the network. After installing a third-party SIM card in the phone, the system will ask you to enter this code when you first turn it on, after which the phone will pick up the signal cellular network and only then will it be ready for full-fledged work.

Let's go back to the display. Indoors or at night, the image on the screen is beyond praise. But in direct sunlight from the former brightness remains zilch. Well, at least I expected to see better results.

It is useless to describe the location of the main functional elements on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. In most cases, everything is standard here, like any other. modern smartphone... On the back there is only a heart rate sensor. He, for sure, will be interesting only at the initial stage of acquaintance, as well as lovers of an active lifestyle or athletes.

I will add a few comments from myself. Surprisingly, Galaxy case The S6 Active is made entirely of plastic. Its anti-vandal properties have already been tested many times, as evidenced by numerous tests on the same Youtube. In real life, functional protrusions on the side parts of the body (bumpers), for example, after impact tests, receive significant visual damage. Nevertheless, the device withstands all falls from a height, diving and freezing with dignity. In other words, you can safely take it with you on hikes without fear of the consequences, because these are the goals that those who choose anti-vandal smartphones pursue.

The presence of grooved hardware buttons helps a lot in the rain or when using the phone underwater.

The tray for nanoSIM-pkata is equipped with a silicone seal.

Most of the back cover surface has a corrugated texture. It looks cute and the fingers are nice.

The external speaker of the Galaxy S6 Active is more than loud. Watch the video with his tests at the beginning of the review.

Camera

I must admit that I have always liked the quality of the camera in modern Samsung. The Galaxy S6 Active has the same optics and software as the Galaxy S6. Their tandem produces images and videos of quite decent quality. For comparison, I will give examples of photos from the camera of my Sharp Docomo SH-01G. Feel the difference, as they say.

The maximum photo resolution is 5312x2988 pixels. The maximum video resolution is 3840x2160p. Videos are recorded in MP4 format with stereo sound at a bit rate of 258 kbps.
