Positioning

There are no changes in this model in terms of market positioning, in comparison with its prototype represented by Sony ericsson W580 has not been. The company expects an audience between the ages of 15 and 24. At the same time, it is emphasized that the social component of the phone for such young people is more important than experiments in the field of design, the device should be calm. Based on this positioning, it becomes clear why the kit included headphones with a second connector for an additional headset. You've probably seen young people in public transport when they listen to one player and share one pair of headphones. Each has one earpiece. There is no quality, but the joint listening to music, read the social role, is fulfilled. I will leave out of the brackets the reasoning that often the second pair of headphones will not be available, and the presence of the second connector is an opportunity to rarely give a chance to enjoy the same music at the same time. For example, a couple in love on a trip. Good decision, you can only praise for it.

In the segment of music sliders, the situation has changed dramatically over the past year. While there were no direct competitors for Sony Ericsson W580, for the current model it is Nokia 5610 XpressMusic, which is positioned exactly for the same segment. The model came out earlier and has already managed to drop somewhat in value, which makes it attractive. Below we will compare these solutions, but for now we note that the presence of such a competitor makes the positions of Sony Ericsson W595 weaker. Playing in a small market niche, the company does not give an excessive advantage in something to defeat a competitor, and the size of the niche due to the presence of two models does not increase significantly. Rather, we can talk about direct competition between these devices. As a result, the success of one means less sales for the other. There is a simple principle here: "Whoever got up first, that and the slippers." This is exactly the way Nokia played, although there are a number of undeniable advantages on the side of the Sony Ericsson product that can persuade young buyers in its favor.

Design, dimensions, controls

The model initially appears on the market in Active Blue, later other colors will be available, for example, Cosmopolitan White, Jungle Gray, Ruby Black, Lava Black.

Especially for the Orange operator, the company releases a modification of this model with the s index - W595s. The device differs in color scheme, speaker grilles, front panel. The menu view, preset themes are also more in line with the operator. There are no other major differences in the models.

The phone measures 100x47x14.1 mm and weighs 104 grams. Average dimensions for the market, but the device feels pleasantly heavy, the plastic is not that light, which was present in Sony Ericsson W580, we can say that the device is more solid. The combination of materials is very ambiguous. Front panel made of matte plastic, inexpensive. The sides and back of the device are velvety (soft touch). The chrome-plated rims are pleasant, how good they will be in use - it is unknown, they are resistant to small items and carrying in a pocket with other items. The device is tightly knocked down, the automatic adjustment mechanism is a little taut. The opening sound is not too melodic, the halves disperse with a rustle.

The interface connector was placed on the left side of the device, on the right side there is a volume rocker and a Walkman button. Speaker grids are visible at the ends. The camera is located on the back surface. There is a light indicator above the display. The strap hole is on the back of the device, which is somewhat unusual.

The location of the microphone is unusual; when opened, you can see it to the right of the keyboard. On the right side there is a channel for talking on the phone when closed. My advice is to open the device in the street, otherwise your interlocutor will not always hear you well.

Display

The display shows up to 262K colors at a resolution of 240x320 pixels (diagonal 2.2 inches, 34x46 mm, TFT). This allows showing on the screen up to 9 lines of text and up to three service lines for most modes; for viewing Internet resources, when working with e-mail, with messages, it is possible to display a larger number of lines due to a smaller font size. The quality of the screen is excellent, the colors are vivid, bright, it behaves well in the sun. In terms of the screen, this model is quite comparable with modern solutions, there are no drawbacks.

Keyboard

The main problem with the W580 was the keys that break apart and the company used the wrong type of solvent. The numeric keypad in W595 is similar to the previous one, these are thin plates on a substrate, they are figuratively cut. There will be problems with them or not - only time will tell. Now it is impossible to judge this without real use by various users, how lucky you are.

The travel of the keys is small, they are tight. Typing is not very pleasant, the short stroke of pressing affects. The backlighting is white, it is uneven, the left row is better illuminated.

The block of function keys also does not have a good stroke when pressed, the buttons here do not make a very pleasant impression to the touch, cheap plastic spoils the perception of the device. This is the most controversial point in the design. Saved on a penny, but the impression is spoiled.

Battery

The back cover has no backlash and is easy to open. Inside is a lithium-polymer battery, its capacity is 950 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the phone can work in standby mode up to 385 hours, talk time - up to 9 hours. In the conditions of Moscow networks the device worked on average for two and a half days under moderate load (up to an hour of talks, about 30 minutes of games, 20 minutes of using the browser). A heavy load means that you have to recharge the device daily. At the same time, a very small number of calls means that the phone can work up to 3-4 days, but this is an unlikely scenario. In European networks, the operating time will be at least twice as high in all modes, due to better network coverage. Music playing time is up to 24 hours.

Data transfer

With a USB connection, you are compulsory must choose whether to access the files on the memory card, this is the data transfer mode, or continue to work with the phone, or turn on the Print mode (printing photos). In the first case, the phone turns off, you see the memory card and phone memory. Despite the declared support for USB 2.0, the data transfer rate does not exceed 500 Kb / s. In the second case, there are various USB settings for accessing the network, the phone acts as a modem.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth in this model is version 2 and supports EDR, in the menu you can set the increased power saving mode. The A2DP profile is also supported, which allows the use of wireless stereo headphones. The model supports the following profiles:

  • Basic Imaging Profile
  • Basic Printing Profile
  • Dial-Up Networking Profile
  • File Transfer Profile
  • Generic Access Profile
  • Generic Object Exchange Profile
  • Handsfree Profile
  • Headset Profile
  • JSR-82 Java API
  • Object Push Profile
  • Personal Area Network Profile
  • Serial Port Profile
  • Service Discovery Application Profile
  • Synchronization Profile
  • SyncML OBEX binding

Memory, memory cards

The phone has about 40 MB of memory available to the user, the set also includes a 2 GB M2 card. Hot swap of memory cards is supported, the maximum card capacity is 16 GB.

Performance

Typical performance for the latest generation of the company's devices, positively differs from most models on the market. There are no restrictions on the size of the JAR file, the size of the HEAP is from 512 KB to 1.5 MB.

Camera

The phone has a 3.2-megapixel camera with a CMOS matrix. No autofocus. The device supports four possible resolutions - 2048x1536, 1632x1224, 1280x960, 640x480 pixels. There are two types of image compression - Normal, Fine. Most of the photos in the examples are in Fine quality. The camera interface is horizontal, there is no side key, the OK button is used as it.

The camera settings look like this:

  • Shutter sound... Choice of one of four shutter sounds, you can turn off the sound.
  • White balance... Choose between automatic mode, as well as Incandescent, Fluorescent, Daylight, Cloudy.
  • Effects... Several effects can be applied to pictures, namely: Negative, Sepia, Black & White.
  • Timer- activated on certain time to take pictures of yourself.
  • Night mode designed for shooting at night or in low light conditions. The noise in the photos increases, the shutter speed increases (you cannot move the camera, otherwise you will get a blurry picture).
  • Shooting mode... Normal mode is taking normal photographs. Burst mode (Burst 4) - taking 4 pictures at once, a series. Panorama - taking panoramic pictures, a very interesting mode that allows you to take unusual photos. The last mode - taking pictures using frames, the photo resolution is automatically reduced.

In shooting mode, the phone's screen plays the role of a viewfinder, the movement of the picture on the screen is smooth, everything is seen very well. Using the numeric keys, you can quickly switch between various functions and shooting parameters, which greatly speeds up the operation of the camera.

New camera functions include adding a position, that is, information about the place where the photo was taken. This function can be disabled from the camera menu. In the absence of a built-in GPS-receiver, this function is not so pleasant and interesting.

Video

Video can be recorded in two resolutions (320x240, 176x144), file format - 3GP. The duration of videos can be specified as limited (up to 10 seconds) and unlimited. The quality of the videos is average, it does not boggle the imagination.

Preinstalled programs, games, themes

Consider in detail all the features software makes no sense, this is the A200 platform, which is perfectly described in a separate article, here we will focus on the features of this device.

The phone has 5 different themes, all of them use flash animation to one degree or another, they can change the appearance of the main menu, for example, to a cyclical one or to a more familiar matrix one. The topics look interesting. The main menu can be made cyclical, circular, or display one icon at a time.

The phone has four games, one - Extreme Air Snowboard - is a good emulator. Racer Fever GT's second game is a regular race. QuadraPop needs no description, the latest Guitar Rock Tour game. It's funny, but this particular game will be preinstalled on the Nokia 5800 in a number of markets. Funny intersection.

Applications are represented by several programs. One of them - Comeks Strips - allows you to create a semblance of comics from your photos, which will be interesting for young people. The second program is World Clock 3D, which shows the time in different cities of the world. Finally, last program- Rock Bobblehead. It demonstrates a rock singer who can control the tilt of the phone in different directions. Someone rightly noted that the program has no practical meaning. If you look in the forehead, then everything is correct. But do not forget that any program can be installed in this phone as a screen saver, and then the meaning immediately appears. In particular, a screensaver in the form of time in different capitals of the world, which replace each other on the screen, or a rock singer whom you can control. It's nice.

Walk Mate is an application for counting the number of steps during the day, week that you have taken.

Converter - converts one value to another.

Music Mate 5 - allows you to play different instruments of your choice by tilting your phone in different directions. I have come across virtuosos who are able to "play" complex melodies in this way.

YouTube - access to mobile version service. You can watch videos in full screen, search. See the rating. The quality leaves much to be desired in most cases; in the absence of WiFi, data transmission is very expensive, unless you have unlimited Internet on the phone.

Musical possibilities

The player of the third version, which is the most complex on the market today, in contrast to the previous models, has a new representation of equalizers, which is more convenient and simple. The rest of the device has all the characteristics of Sony Ericsson W910i.

SensMe... To the standard set of functions of the Walkman of the third Sony versions Ericsson W595 also has a SensMe option. This is a playlist that includes various songs and categorizes them by type (playback speed, mood). You do not need to add tags to songs, Sony Media Manager is used for this purpose, it analyzes all the melodies on your computer and adds the necessary information. Another thing is that such a process takes time. For example, the analysis of about 1.5 GB of music in our case took about 20-25 minutes. The advantage of Media Manager is that it can work with memory cards, mandatory connection the phone itself is not required. The program can also convert photos, videos for your phone, its capabilities are quite wide.

Is the SensMe function interesting? Undoubtedly. On the melody map, you can see the location of each track with dots, you can move between them, and a certain point is highlighted, and it starts playing. However, several dots hit the sight at once, they are also melodies. By pressing enter, you can create a playlist with melodies similar in mood, playback speed, and so on. It is very pleasant for certain moods in life.

However, you need to understand that the function will work well only if you listen to music of various genres, as well as a lot of it on your phone. If you add a couple of three albums by the same artist, then you will most likely see that they are all in the same part of the map. The meaning of the function is lost. It also makes sense to use cards with a capacity of 2 GB and above. Only on such a volume will such playlists become diverse and will delight you.

Shake control... Used by full version control the player by shaking. It happens very simply. Press and hold the Walkman button, and then shake the device, when moving forward it skips to the next song, backward - respectively, to the previous one. Just shaking - random choice of composition. When performing an action, there is Feedback, the device vibrates. A novelty of this model is the ability to adjust the sound volume, you have to shake the device up to raise it, or down to lower it.

You shouldn't think that the function will find widespread use. It will be of interest only to those who are engaged in running, other sports and want to be able to quickly change the composition. Young people may be interested in trying it in action and nothing more. It is more convenient to connect a remote control and use it to control playback.

Of the new filters, it is worth noting the "time machine", it plays songs for a certain year. From the more traditional ones - the list of the most played, the least played.

The two speakers in this unit are loud. Well spaced apart and really deliver a good, clean sound. For young people, this can be a very powerful argument in favor of this apparatus.

General description of Walkman 3.0... Of the fundamental differences from previous version Walkman 2.0 can be noted support for DRM 2.0, as well as support for MTP, which allows you to directly transfer songs from Windows Media Player.

The device finds all files and directories on the memory card, extracts information from metadata (ID3 tags). Supported audio formats are MP3, AAC, AAC +, E-AAC +, WAV, WMA, and m4a. There are no bit rate restrictions for MP3 files, you can also upload files from VBR. The company recommends using 192 Kbps files.

In the music library, all stored music is divided according to several criteria:

  • Performers- the list of artists is given in alphabetical order, there is a quick search by artist name.
  • Albums- sorting by album name, search is also available.
  • Recordings- a general list of all melodies, sorting occurs by the name of the song or, if it is absent in the metadata, by the name of the file.
  • genre Is sorting by type of music direction, for example, Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues and so on.
  • My playlists- playlists created by the user, they can be created both in the device itself and on a computer when viewing the contents of the memory in USB mode Mass Storage, when updating the library, the device also finds them.

Unlike the second version, all transitions are made horizontal, but outwardly decorated a little differently. This does not cause any difficulties. All navigation is carried out in a few touches, and in each list there is a search by several letters.

The mode of repeated playback of one or all tracks, random playback is available. Progressive rewind, holding down the key changes the rewind step. In the standard, basic player, you cannot select visualization, that is, animation in place of the album picture. Only the image associated with the album.

If you have music playing and you are in standby mode, then launching the Media section will immediately lead to the player item.

The quality of music playback has not changed in any direction, everything is exactly the same as in the previous models. The equalizer is seven-band, you can set your own settings, turn on the expansion of the stereo base. Equalizer settings are now available only when headphones are connected, the pictures set for the default equalizers are clearly displayed.

As standard option there is TrackID, there is a built-in FM radio with RDS support (for detailed description go to the description of the A200 platform).

Playback quality... The bundled headphones have a good quality of music reproduction. The model, in my opinion, is no worse or better than other representatives of the Walkman family. There is a volume control in 15 positions, which is quite enough. The device plays loudly, subjectively the model seemed to me better than the same Sony Ericsson W910i, the difference is felt, and it is for the better.

Comparison with Sony Ericsson W580

The owners of the previous device will be interested to see what has changed in the functions of the device, what improvements are present.

It clearly follows from the table that new model retaining the cost of the previous solution at the time of its release, it wins in all respects, except that the memory card slot was moved under the battery compartment cover, there are no side light indicators. In all other aspects, the novelty is significantly superior to its predecessor. Unfortunately, the company has abandoned the sports application, it is being replaced by WalkMate, the program simply counts the number of your steps. It is not as interesting as the previous solution. But the number of additional programs in the W595 is much larger, this solution is more interesting.

Comparison with Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

These two models are direct competitors with all the ensuing consequences. At the time of the appearance of Sony Ericsson W595, the cost of the device from Nokia had already decreased, so it looks a little more attractive. But is it that simple? Let's take a look at the performance comparison table.

Not twin brothers, but very similar solutions. In both cases, there is no 3.5 mm jack on the case; you must use a headset cable. The sound quality is better in Nokia 5610, while functionally the player is richer in W595. The advantages of the device from Sony Ericsson include a built-in motion sensor, screen rotation depending on how you hold it. In short, the device wins by a significant margin in terms of the functionality of the music player. Quite good stereo speakers can be called a serious plus, they are very loud and sounding well.

Called VGA-resolution recording, flash for the camera, plus front camera in a Nokia product it is impossible, these are secondary functions for the majority. At the same time, the difference in the cost of the two solutions is minimal. The package bundle is comparable, Sony Ericsson wins, since the card is larger in volume.

The difficult question is what to choose for the buyer. On the side of the Sony Ericsson product there is a novelty, more functions and adequate price for its segment. Considering that Nokia 5610 will be present on the market for about half a year, Sony Ericsson W595 can be considered an obvious win. The withdrawal of the same solution from Nokia is planned only for the second quarter of 2009. Accordingly, until this moment Nokia 5610 remains in the niche between Sony Ericsson W580 and Sony Ericsson W595, it remains exactly in the middle. Outperforming the younger model in a number of parameters, it loses to the older one. In my opinion, the choice is obvious.

Impressions

The model did not bring any surprises, a moderately strong, well perceptible vibration alert, a very loud call signal, this is the distinguishing feature of the device. Good quality communication, the disadvantages include the need to open the device on a noisy street, the microphone can blow out, but the minus is nominal and nothing more.

In October, the cost of the phone will be 320-340 Euro (in Russia it is about 11-12 thousand rubles). Against the background of the junior model, which is not being removed from production, the device will look good, attract with novelty, minimal price difference, but more functionality. The solution turned out to be interesting, especially in the absence of a large number similar models in a slider form factor. The first deliveries will include blue and white flowers(Active Blue, Cosmopolitan White). This model turned out to be one of the few that are well balanced in terms of cost, in the line from Sony Ericsson, good value price quality. If you are looking at sliders for a child, or you are a little old, then this is a good choice.

  • Shooting mode... Normal mode is taking normal photographs. Burst mode (Burst 4) - taking 4 pictures at once, a series. Panorama - taking panoramic pictures, a very interesting mode that allows you to take unusual pictures. The last mode - taking pictures using frames, the photo resolution is automatically reduced.

In shooting mode, the phone's screen plays the role of a viewfinder, the movement of the picture on the screen is smooth, everything is seen quite well.

It makes no sense to examine in detail all the features of the software, this is the A200 platform, which is perfectly described in a separate article, here we will focus on the features of this device.

Finally, the last program is Rock Bobblehead.

YouTube - access to the mobile version of the service. You can watch videos in full screen, search. See the rating. The quality leaves much to be desired in most cases; in the absence of WiFi, data transmission is quite expensive, unless you have unlimited Internet on your phone.

Musical possibilities

The player of the third version, which is the most complex on the market today, in contrast to the previous models, has a new representation of equalizers, which is more convenient and simple. The rest of the device has all the characteristics of Sony Ericsson W910i.

SensMe... In addition to the standard set of Walkman functions in the third version, the Sony Ericsson W595 also has a SensMe option. The advantage of the Media Manager is that it can work with memory cards; the phone itself is not required to be connected.

The full version of the player control with shaking is used. It happens very simply. Press and hold the Walkman button, and then shake the device, when moving forward it skips to the next song, backward - respectively, to the previous one. Just shaking - random choice of composition. When an action is taken, there is a feedback, the device vibrates.

The main differences from the previous version of Walkman 2.0 include support for DRM 2.0, as well as support for MTP, which allows you to directly transfer songs from Windows Media Player.

  • My playlists- playlists created by the user, they can be created both in the device itself and on a computer when viewing the contents of the memory in the USB Mass Storage mode; when updating the library, the device also finds them.

Unlike the second version, all transitions are made horizontal, but outwardly decorated a little differently. This does not cause any difficulties. All navigation is carried out in a few touches, and in each list there is a search by several letters.

The mode of repeat playback of one or all tracks, random playback is available.

As a standard option, there is TrackID, there is a built-in FM radio with RDS support (for a detailed description, go to the description of the A200 platform).

It clearly follows from the table that the new model, while retaining the cost of the previous solution at the time of its release, wins in all respects, except that the memory card slot was moved under the battery cover, there are no side light indicators.

Recording in VGA-resolution, a flash for the camera, plus a front-facing camera cannot be called a big advantage in Nokia's product, these are secondary functions for the majority.

Considering that Nokia 5610 will be on the market for about half a year, Sony Ericsson W595 can be considered an obvious win.

Good communication quality, the disadvantages include the need to open the device on a noisy street, the microphone can blow out, but the minus is nominal and nothing more.

In October, the cost of the phone will be 320-340 Euro (in Russia it is about 11-12 thousand rubles). Against the background of the junior model, which is not being removed from production, the device will look good, attract with novelty, minimal price difference, but more functionality. The solution turned out to be interesting, especially given the absence of a large number of similar models in the slider form factor. The first deliveries will include blue and white devices (Active Blue, Cosmopolitan White). This model turned out to be one of the few that are well balanced in terms of cost, in the line from Sony Ericsson, with a good price / quality ratio. If you are looking at sliders for a child, or you are a little old, then this is a good choice.

Introduction

We have already met with the W595, when it was still at the prototype stage, this time it is more serious - we have a serial sample in our hands and we are ready to test it. The difference between the W580 and its predecessor lies not only in the refinement of the design. 2.2 inch QVGA display and 3.2 megapixel camera make it quite attractive, even without considering all the amenities of the Walkman series. The presence of a modern appearance and intriguing characteristics make the appearance of the Sony Ericsson W595 in the Walkman family at an opportune moment.

Key features of Sony Ericsson W595:

  • Quad-band GSM and 3G with HSDPA support;
  • 2.2 inch TFT display with QVGA resolution, showing 256K colors;
  • 3 megapixel camera;
  • Bluetooth with A2DP and USBv2.0;
  • Accelerometer for automatic image rotation;
  • 40 MB of built-in memory and an input for M2 memory card (2GB card included);
  • Walkman 3.0 music player with Shake Control (shake control) and SensMe (allows you to create playlists that match your mood);
  • FM radio with RDS;
  • Multitasking support;
  • Smart dialing function ( speed dial by the first digits of the phone number from the contact list);
  • Convenient console, good sliding mechanism;
  • Stereo speakers;
  • 3.5 mm headphone and headset input.

The main disadvantages of the Sony Ericsson W595:

  • Quite small display by modern standards;
  • The camera is not equipped with autofocus;
  • Small opportunities in the field of video recording;
  • No protection for camcorder lenses and flash;
  • There is no application for viewing documents;
  • Poor quality battery cover;
  • There is no camera on the front panel for making video calls.

Includes Sony Ericsson W595

The Sony Ericsson W595 box contains everything you might need while using your phone. In the kit you get: charging, USB cable and a headset.

Although the Stereo headphones are of the bass-reflex type, they look a bit modest. The headphones come with a stereo adapter that has two 3.5 mm inputs, which allows you to connect two pairs of headphones at once and, thus, listen to music with your friend.

To top it off, the set with Sony Ericsson W595 comes with a 2GB M2 memory card, which most users will consider sufficient to accommodate their favorite music. The rest of the box is occupied by instructions. The software version 4.5 is installed, but it is efficiently constantly updated. You can update the software either yourself or by contacting the service - repair cell phones, it literally costs 200-300 rubles.

Counting on the same success as the W580, the W595 has the same design features and superior interface. Metal inserts and elastic surface of the back and side planes of the phone make it really comfortable to handle and give it an aesthetic look. Symmetrical sloping upper and lower surfaces reminding us of the good old W580 and even more ancient, but nevertheless cool Sony Ericsson W910, we liked it.

With dimensions of 100x47x14 mm and a weight of 104 grams this phone fits easily in your pocket. The display with a diagonal of 2.2 inches, QVGA resolution, displaying 262K colors occupies most of the front panel and is a significant plus for Sony Ericsson W595. This screen boasts a crisp, saturated picture with excellent levels of brightness and contrast, reminiscent of the W902 we reviewed recently.

2.2 inch QVGA phone display

The keys located below the display are analogous to Sony Ericsson W902 in terms of functionality, but this time they are much larger and therefore more convenient to use.

The keypad becomes accessible after opening the phone by means of a slide.

In general, it is quite comfortable to use, but it lacks a little sensitivity. The keys are large and the rows are well spaced, making it easy to type without looking at the keyboard. The keys feel solid, so the infamous W580 keyboard, with its fragile keys, is a thing of the past.

Sony Ericsson W595 keyboard. Photo: sotmarket.ru

The Walkman key is located on the right side of the W595 and provides access to the same options as on the W902: launches the Walkman player and activates the Shake control function. It should be noted that the size of this key is smaller than we would like, it is not very convenient to press, but you can get used to it.

The Sony Ericsson W595 is equipped with large and powerful stereo speakers, each located on the bottom and top of the phone. This arrangement is specially designed for listening to music when the phone is lying on a flat surface. Due to the fact that the Sony Ericsson logo does not protrude above the back surface, the phone lies flat and stable on flat surfaces.

The three megapixel camera is located on the back of the phone. Unlike the W902, the Sony Ericsson W595 lacks a flash for high-quality shooting in the evening. Add fixed focus to that and you realize that photography was not a priority in the making of this phone. And as you might guess, there is also no protective lens cover. However, don't be disappointed, with the W595 you can still get some pretty good shots.

The battery cover fits snugly against the back of the phone case. The only thing to notice is that it is quite difficult to open. To open it, you need to put a lot of force on its upper right corner, while it will bend quite a lot before giving in. The plastic on the back is thin and can crack with frequent manipulation, just like on our test sample. Let's hope you don't have to change your SIM or M2 cards too often.

After you disassemble the battery cover, you will find a 950mAh BST-33 lithium polymer battery underneath it. Claimed battery life: 9 hours of talk time and 385 hours of standby.

Conclusion

Sony Ericsson W595 phone - very powerful music phone middle management. Of course, here you have to think about when choosing between the Walkman and Cyber-shot series (autofocus and flash guaranteed) from Sony Ericsson.

The image quality on the display is quite satisfactory for us, we have no complaints about this.

As for the price (200 Euro), the phone is highly overpriced, it cannot compete with the Sony Ericsson C902 and W760 similar in price. So, we are parting with this phone, hoping for a more reasonable price and positive impressions.

As often on our resource models of phones from the highest lines of manufacturers are considered, we also often have to think about the target audience - after all, the niche predicted by marketers will not always be ready to lay out the final amount offered in retail, with all surcharges. In our country, subsidies for operators when buying a phone with a contract are not yet developed at all, and resellers, I must say, care more about their wallet than about ours. Hence, the conversations of end users about the advantages of one or another model usually end with the phrase - yes, but when it gets cheaper. And what if we discuss models for young people, teenagers - people who usually do not have a permanent source of income, but a mobile phone is not only a means of communication, but also a fashion accessory and a music player. Our today's review will focus on such a model - a novelty from SonyEricsson, model W595, a compact slider phone from the Walkman line, combining elegant design and musical functions, equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth module and support for removable memory cards of the M2 format. With all this, the device will cost about 300 euros, which in our opinion is not bad at all.

SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: Design and features

Before us is a small slider phone of a pleasant blue color (officially the name of the color is Active Blue) without an external antenna. The form factor is loved by the manufacturer and I must say that it also copes with the performance. The device is not flashy, despite the obvious musical component of the line, although, perhaps, it is precisely in the tested color scheme, because the manufacturer also announced the Cosmopolitan White, Jungle Gray, Ruby Black variants, which, judging by the photos on the website, have a less conservative look. The dimensions of the phone leave mixed feelings - on the one hand, the small thickness and overall dimensions when folded (47 x 100 x 14 mm), and on the other hand, considerable weight (104 g). Yes, you will be right if you say that he is not excessive, but against the background of his appearance and with prolonged negotiations, he makes itself felt.

The W595 is made of plastic. The main color has already been mentioned, the texture is soft-touch, pleasant to the touch and practical to use - the body is not easily soiled, except for the display, and the device does not slip in the hand. In addition, decorative silver lines are located around the perimeter - they are also plastic, but have a glossy texture.

The design of the novelty can be assessed as "good": if there is no backlash in the design, then the gap between the halves is slightly larger than expected, and the slider mechanism itself is a bit tight. The ratio of the body halves can be estimated as 2 to 3, i.e. the sliding part is smaller, but this is an indisputable plus. The opening of the slider is provided with one hand, and although you need to make an effort at the beginning of the movement, then the closer mechanism will help you. The manufacturer did not equip the phone with a special ledge for the thumb, but to avoid smudging the screen when opening it, you can rest your finger on the side panel of the case, or on the smooth bevel of the lower part of the upper half.

On the front panel of the W595 there is a light sensor and a horizontal slot for the speaker, a display and control keys.

The display of the novelty is a 2.2-inch TFT matrix with a resolution of 240x320 pixels (QVGA), capable of displaying up to 262K color shades. The picture quality is decent, the colors are pleasant, but the brightness almost falls short of the ideal.

The control block is a construction of a circle of a joystick to which 2 semicircles of contextual keys adjoin from the side. Joystick deflections are traditionally responsible for launching specified functions, and the central key for confirmation. The control arcs are located on the context key, as well as the Activity Menu and Cansel keys (left and right, respectively). In the middle of the arcs there are buttons for accepting and rejecting a call.

In addition, taking into account the musical component of the device, the manufacturer immediately marked the joystick with the designations of the functions for which the joystick is responsible during the operation of the music player: Play / Pause in the center and rewind and forward (left and right, respectively).

The block of alphanumeric buttons is located on the inner surface of the lower half of the case. As is customary with sliders, the control and number keys are located at different levels, however, in the W595, due to the gentle bevel at the bottom of the sliding panel, this drawback is leveled.

The block consists of 4 lines of 3 keys each, and if the rows are well spaced apart, then the keys in them practically touch the side edges. The keys do not take up all the space on the panel, which is why their size can be classified as medium. At the same time, they protrude slightly from the body and their course is small, a little tight.

The block backlight is white, not quite uniform (this also applies to brightness).

If you paid attention, then on the right, between the 2nd and 3rd lines, there is a small hole. It's a microphone. Moreover, you can talk on W595 even with the slider closed; for this, a special chute is provided on the right side of the sliding panel.

Why is the microphone not located at the bottom of the case, you ask? The answer is obvious from the very first minutes of using the device and is unambiguously readable from the photo - from below, just like on top of the case, there are consoles of external speakers under a longitudinal metal mesh.

The side edges are slightly filled with functional elements: on the left, closer to the bottom edge, there is a proprietary Fast-Port interface connector. On the right we see the combined volume rocker and Walkman key (responsible for starting the player).

On the back of the device, functional elements are located on both sides of the central cover, the battery compartment cover. At the top we see the camera lens window, and at the bottom there is a slot for attaching the strap.

Fastening back cover controversial enough - you do not immediately understand how to remove it. On the right we see a small ledge, which you need to catch with your fingernail and pull the cover up. The fastening of the latter is carried out by 9 protrusions - 3 from the bottom and 2 from the other sides. It is logical that with such an arrangement on the case and the number of fasteners, there is no structural backlash.

A special recess in the case is provided for the battery, with protective protrusions in the upper part. With the battery installed, it is not possible to remove the SIM card, the compartment is blocked. The SIM card compartment is recessed by a third into the body and covered with a protective bracket. To the right of the compartment you can see a slot for an M2 memory card - a small recess and a fixing bracket at the level of the contacts. Those. "Hot swapping" of a removable memory card is provided in the W595, but to perform this manipulation, you need to remove the back cover.

SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: User interface

SonyEricsson W595 is built on the A200 platform, which is actually expected. The platform has managed to prove itself well and to leave it while the manufacturer is not going to. We turn on the phone and immediately get into the setup wizard, which allows you to set the language, current date and time and copy the numbers from the card to the phone's memory. If you refuse, you can always find this function in the settings menu.

The device's desktop is typical for the manufacturer's devices. Among the indicators are presented: the level of reception and battery charge in the upper part, the name of the operator's network slightly lower in the center, and closer to the lower part, the current date and time, as well as the labels for the contextual keys. The user is also free to choose the size of the watch from 2 options (large and small) in the settings menu.

The desktop picture can be downloaded graphic file or a photograph taken by the camera of the device. There are only 2 themes available, but for some reason it seems to us that this will not cause any difficulties for the user - on the vastness of the network you can find a sufficient number of themes for the A200 platform.

The W595 menu is selected from three views: a matrix of 12 icons (3x4), a carousel (circular scrolling) and one icon per screen with vertical scrolling of items. The icons are static and the minimal graphic effect is present only in the matrix type of display - when you hover the cursor over a menu item, the icon increases in size. The menu sub-items are mostly text, executed as a vertical list of components with a small icon to the left of the name. For quick access the necessary sub-items are provided with numerical key sequences, which the device processes quickly enough, which is good news.

Do not forget about the so-called Activity Menu - this menu is called by a special application key located under the call button and provides access to the following functions: a list of events (missed calls, SMS, etc.), running applications, links and frequently used pages from the machine's Internet browser.

SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: Telephone service

By default, the call log, which can be called either through the menu, or by pressing the call button, displays a single list of the last numbers that differ from each other by the call type icon. In addition, bookmarks are arranged horizontally, through which you can go to separate lists of received, outgoing and missed calls. In addition to the name or number of the subscriber, the device will display the time and duration (if the call was made). In addition, the device provides a search function from dialed numbers, and not added to the telephone directory - when dialing the first digits, the display will display a list of matching numbers, from which you are offered to make a selection. Call and traffic counters can be found in the settings menu - it is not always convenient, but they are not so much in demand, according to the manufacturer, to add them to the “calls” sub-item.

The W595 can store up to 1000 subscribers. It is the subscribers, not the numbers, i.e. subject to filling in all fields (7000 numbers). The list of contacts is a monopolist and shows only entries in the phone's memory, completely ignoring the SIM card. It will not work to force him to display both lists, although you can see these numbers through the function menu.

For each subscriber, you can set a large number of data such as:

  • Name (without surname)
  • 7 types of phones (mobile, mobile personal, mobile work, home, work, fax and others)
  • Web page and email address
  • Custom ringtone, messages and picture
  • Mailing address
  • Place of work and position
  • A note and date of birth (which can be added to the organizer by default).
  • The device provides user groups, which are proposed to be set independently. Alas, you cannot change the ringtone for them, or add a call picture.

    For frequently used numbers, keys 1-9 are provided, and you can set up speed dialing on them. In addition, the user can create his own business card (v-card) and create special numbers (allowed, personal and emergency call numbers).

    SonyEricsson W595 :: Overview :: Messages

    The messages menu contains access to sms, mms, e-mail and voice mail.

    When creating a new message, the device will ask what type the user wants to create, and only then proceed to editing. The form of the message is simple and standard, regardless of the topic, it resembles a white sheet. To assist the user with a list of symbols, including emoticons, a T9 dictionary and templates. In addition, in the process of editing sms, when changing the solution, you can go to mms from the same template.

    Editing an email is similar to editing on a PC: To field, subject, text, and attachments. Customization account takes a little time, although some fields could be adjusted automatically based on the information entered.

    During testing, problems and errors with encodings were not recorded, the client is quite convenient and functional.

    SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: Organizer, office

    The organizer is presented as a separate item in the menu and includes all the necessary options. The file manager provides access to all internal content of the device and memory card, contains information about cataloged files, such as:

  • Camera album
  • Sounds
  • Images
  • Web pages
  • Applications
  • Other
  • Taking into account the installed games, applications and themes, about 26 MB of free memory remains in the device (40 MB in total). The W595 supports removable memory cards of the M2 format and a 2Gb module is already supplied in the kit, which should be enough for a demanding user, even if for the first time.

    There are as many as 5 alarm clocks in the device. They are configured both for one-time and daily, taking into account the choice of days, triggering. Why such an amount is needed, we do not undertake to judge, but sometimes we will not deny the need for several alarm clocks.

    Any melody stored in the phone's memory can be a ringing signal, and activation is provided even when the phone is switched off.

    A calendar with the ability to display a month, a week and a specific day, will allow you to set up reminders about events. After selecting a topic, type, start time and duration, you can set the duration and date. Nothing new in principle, but the item is usually irreplaceable.

    Tasks and notes, as well as important details of the organizer. Unlike the calendar, the events included in these sub-items are not tied to a specific date and are placed in a single vertical list sorted alphabetically.

    The timer and stopwatch are similar in appearance, but different in nature. The stopwatch supports up to 9 laps, and just like the timer, it can work in the background, which is quite convenient.

    The calculator in W595 is a somewhat advanced adding machine, in which, in addition to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, there is a percentage calculation.

    A code memo will be useful to hide confidential information from prying eyes... At the first call, the application asks you to enter a 4-digit password and a control word, and only then proceed to filling.

    SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: Internet

    The device has a standard browser from NetFront. The browser itself is quite convenient - it can scale HTML pages to fit the screen, has a list of bookmarks, a history of visits, as well as the ability to save pages and individual images. Cookies, page caching and password saving are supported. The first link of the application contains access to Google, which often makes it easier to find the information you need.

    SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: Communications

    The device works in the following networks: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 / UMTS 2100, supports EDGE and HSDPA.

    The communication capabilities of the device are gathered in one point, hiding in the settings. Among them, Bluetooth, USB, sync and Internet options. Regarding Bluetooth version 2.0+ EDR, there are no complaints about the protocol and its implementation in the W595. During testing, the device was connected to a PC, PDA, BT-headset and several smartphones. There are no complaints about the work and data transfer, no connection breaks were recorded either. The A2DP profile was tested in conjunction with the Plantronics Pulsar 590E and worked quite correctly.

    Supported Bluetooth profiles are as follows:

  • Handsfree
  • Headset
  • Dial-up Networking
  • File Transfer
  • Basic Imaging
  • Serial Port
  • Synchronization
  • SyncML OBEX binding
  • Generic Object Exchange
  • Generic Access
  • Object Push
  • JSR-82 Java API
  • Personal Area Networking
  • From the USB settings, we note the ability to set the default function of the device when connected to a PC: phone, transfer of media files, print, transfer of files, or selection at each connection.

    SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: Camera

    Based on the positioning of the W595, we can assume that there is no big emphasis on the camera and this assumption is justified in practice. The 3.2-megapixel CMOS module without autofocus and flash demonstrates modest performance. We launch the application from the main menu (there is no separate key for this manipulation) and during the start screen we can press "0" to get a hint about the function keys when working with the camera.

    The interface of the application is convenient - the context keys are assigned the functions of setting and returning, and the central one is the choice of the type of action (photo, video, viewing). In the lower left corner, we see information about the current image size settings and the remaining amount until memory is full. It will not be superfluous to note that the camera is supposed to be used when horizontal orientation the device, it is with this calculation that the control keys are designed. Both the central joystick key and the Walkman key can be responsible for the shutter release, and the volume / status rocker can be responsible for the zoom.

    Curious, but no longer new function is a stitching of panoramas from 3 pictures.

    The settings include the following parameters:

  • Shooting mode (normal, panorama, frames, burst)
  • Image size (3MP, 2MP, 1MP and VGA)
  • Night shot (enabled and disabled)
  • Self-timer (enabled and disabled)
  • White balance (automatic, clear, cloudy, fluorescent, incandescent)
  • Effects (disabled, black and white, negative, sepia, overexposure)
  • Quality (high or normal)
  • Preview (enabled and disabled)
  • Add position
  • Save to (memory card or phone memory)
  • Auto rotate
  • Shutter sound (4 choices and disabled)
  • Examples of pictures will clearly tell about the camera, but on my own I would like to note that the camera is demanding for good lighting, is not friendly with the macro and often gives out a wiggle when saving, if you did not manage to firmly hold the device in your hands after shooting.

    SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: Multimedia capabilities

    The multimedia browser W595 is somewhat reminiscent of appearance the interface used in Sony, PSP and PS3 (XMB) products and is now used in almost all new products. It is a vertical list cataloged by content type, offering access to photos, music, videos, games, rss feeds, and customization of display options.

    The music player of the device provides access to all the audio content of the device. We can see the sorted information by artists, albums, tracks, playlists, plus everything has access to audiobooks, podcasts.

    The interface of the player itself is a display of the device divided into 2 almost equal parts, in the lower part of which, under the "progress bar", there is information about the time: total time and time remaining until the end of playback, and a little below information from the tag of the song being played. Working in the background is possible, which is quite logical. To control the functions of the player, deflections of the joystick are used, and the rocker on the right side of the device is responsible for the volume.

    Of the player's functions, we note:

  • Shuffle play order
  • Song repeat
  • Equalizer
  • Extended stereo
  • Portrait or landscape display orientation
  • The music playback quality in the W595 is at a decent level. The volume is sufficient, it was more than enough for most situations, including the subway, and if we talk about external speakers, they are beyond praise.

    Also, the multimedia capabilities of the device include sound recording and entertainment applications VideoDJ, PhotoDJ and MusicDJ. In the first case, it is an easy-to-design dictaphone, which, nevertheless, writes information with a fairly high quality without a time limit (except for free memory).

    MusicDJ will allow you to create your own composition from a set of samples included in the kit. By changing and adding sound on 4 tracks, you can compose a unique melody, which can then be saved and used as a call.

    The TrackID app allows you to retrieve album and artist information over an Internet connection after recording a few seconds of a song.

    The radio with the RDS function, placed in the main menu by the manufacturer, works, as you would expect, when the headset is connected, which acts as an antenna. Supports autosearch and memory for 20 radio stations.

    SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: games and apps

    The device has 4 games, Extreme Snowboarding, Guitar Rock Tour (guitar simulator), QuadraPop (variation on the Tetris theme) and Racing FeverGT (auto racing). Not a lot, but not at all a little for the first time, given the presence of a Java machine and the possibility of installing new content.

    Java machine test is performed with standard JBenchmark programs. The results can be seen in the table below, in our opinion they are pretty good.

    Of the additional software bundled with the W595, quite a few useful and curious applications have been installed, among them:

    Service Google maps downloads data from the Internet. At the first contact, you will be prompted to read the license agreement, by accepting which you can continue to work. The application displays both a map image and a satellite photo, at choice, tying the current location to the base station. Planning a route and navigating the map is also possible, however Google itself advises against using the function as a car navigator.

    Comeks strips is an application for creating a kind of collage from captured photos or uploaded images.

    Coverter is a converter of quantities such as distance, volume, weight, temperature, speed, area, and even tip calculation.

    Music Mate 5 is an application that uses the accelerometer to play the musical instrument selected in the menu.

    Music Quiz is a kind of "guess the melody" in which the songs loaded into the device take part.

    Rock Bobblehead is an incomprehensible program that will allow shaking the device to use the figure shown on the display, vaguely reminiscent of Elvis.

    Walk Mate is a pedometer that uses accelerator functions.

    YouTube - access to a popular video service directly from a mobile phone.

    SonyEricsson W595 :: Review :: Impressions and conclusions

    On the manufacturer's website, you can see the following values autonomous work W595: 9 hours talk time and 385 - standby time. In practice, this data translates into 2.5-3 days with an average load - using telephone functions, moderate messaging, activated Bluetooth, taking pictures with a camera and listening to the player. Undoubtedly, it is possible to squeeze out more operating time from the device, while reducing the load, however, when using the W595 as a player, the operating time will be significantly reduced.

    The reception level of the novelty is at a decent level - no connection failures were recorded for a week of use. The loudness of the speaker is impressive, it has a considerable margin, so in normal conditions it had to be muffled.

    Calling loudspeakers, of which there are two in the model, are extremely loud - the device was heard in all situations up to the pocket of the bag. The vibration alert is not bad, but against the background of the loudspeakers it can receive no more than four.

    If the manufacturer set himself the task of creating a youth phone that would include a large amount of functions, but not to the detriment of the size and design, then in our opinion he succeeded. The model is rather laconic, there are hardly any obvious shortcomings in it, except for some shortcomings that we described in the review, but we do not exclude that this will be corrected in production samples.

    On the eve of the New Year holidays, and after them Valentine's Day, Defender of the Fatherland Day and International Women's Day, you should take a close look at the W595, if you are not chasing technical innovations that you need more for image than for everyday use, and in phones you appreciate the compactness and functionality.
