What are the features and functions of the moto z. Motorola smartphones from Lenovo at New Year's Eve - Sale: Moto Z, Moto Z Play, Photography Camera, Phone Projector Module, Mobile Stereo. Moto Z Play: hardware review and testing

If you are looking for reliable smartphones with the possibility of "upgrade" appearance, if you are interested in having a model famous brand, we invite you to get acquainted with Motorola phones of 2016 - Moto Z, Moto Z Play and Moto Z Force devices.

Features of the Moto Z series

A feature of the Moto Z series smartphones is the ability to connect additional units to them, the so-called .

All Motorola Moto Z models have a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, the body has a splash-proof nano-coating, and the devices use powerful Snapdragon processors with 5-series Adreno graphics accelerators.

Access to the phone "through" the fingerprint sensor will be able to protect your data.
If you are used to listening to music through headphones, then in the case of the Moto Z and Moto Z Force models, you will have to connect them to the jack USB Type-C through a special adapter.

Built-in Smartphone Cameras

We will consider the differences between the indicators of the built-in cameras at the end of the article, here we will point out that from the point of aperture, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force models (f / 1.8) have the best indicators, the Moto Z Play smartphone has the largest pixel size (1.3 microns) ...

Let's take as an example sample photos taken with the 21-megapixel camera of the Moto Z Force.

Smartphones' built-in dual LED flashes allow you to get better photos. All models can record video at a maximum resolution of 2160p.
The front cameras of the phones have a resolution of 5 megapixels, are equipped with a separate "selfie flash" and can record video at 1080p.

Empowering Smartphones with Moto Mods

If you want to expand the capabilities of your Moto Z series smartphones, here are some additional Moto Mods accessories that allow you to transform your smartphone into something special.
So, block with JBL speakers allows you to turn your smartphone into a portable music Center, a Insta Share a projector to a home theater.

Optical system Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod allows you to use 10x optical zoom (using a 1 / 2.3-inch CMOS sensor with a resolution of 12 megapixels).

Extra battery in "fashion" Tumi Power bank will give the smartphone an additional charge of 2200 mAh.

Differences between Moto Z smartphones

Which of the Moto Z smartphones can be optimal for you?
If you want to have a model in a metal case with maximum technical characteristics, we recommend paying attention to the Moto Z and Moto Z Force smartphones.
If your choice is a more compact device, then you simply cannot find a better candidate from the existing "trinity" than Moto Z, but if you are interested in a device with more advanced photo capabilities and a powerful battery, then the Moto Z Force device is already in the first place.
However, the desire to listen to music "in the traditional way" through headphones with a 3.5 mm jack, and for a rather long time, the ability to have optimal technical characteristics, allow you to make a choice in favor of the Moto Z Play model.

We will show the differences between smartphones in the form of a table.

Yes, Motorola no longer plays a decisive role in the market - we will probably never wait for the new RAZR. But do something faceless? Maybe high quality, but common? This is not about Moto - Lenovo clearly needs the brand to take risks. The new Z-series smartphones - like last year's Z, Z Play and Z Force - have received an unusual feature, as if inherited by engineers from Google, under whose wing Motorola huddled for several years. It's about a modular design, albeit in a much less radical implementation than in Google Ara.

An accessory with various properties can be attached to the back panel of any Z-line smartphone: a logical additional battery, a speaker, a projector or a camera with optical zoom. The column, by the way, was developed jointly with JBL, and to create the photomodule they attracted no less Hasselblad - well, or at least used the big name of the Swedish company.

We tested the "base" model Moto Z, which stands in the middle between the less powerful, but designed for a long time without recharging Z Play and similar in technical characteristics, but equipped with an indestructible display Z Force. In addition to modularity, I would like to draw your attention to a few more distinctive features Moto Z: still rare for smartphones not under the Samsung brand AMOLED screen and ultra-thin (just over five millimeters) body stuffed with microphones - thanks to them, the call quality should improve. And, finally, a hotly fashionable innovation - the absence of a mini-jack for headphones.

Appearance, ergonomics and software

We are accustomed to adjusting the external world for ourselves - at least in small things, surround ourselves with "our", individual things. Recently, smartphones have become one of the central objects in our life - small, poorly distinguishable from each other pieces of metal / plastic with a screen. You can only express yourself through them with the help of designer protective covers. In the days of phones with removable batteries and thus replaceable back covers, some companies offered variations in this area. Motorola still employs people who remember those days very well - and in the new family, the concept of a removable back cover is back. The battery, however, is not removable, but that very modularity came to the rescue.

Moto Z looks a little intimidating out of the box: with a protruding camera "Adam's apple", a brand of glossy surface and sparkling contacts for plugging in replaceable modules. The back cover lies separately - it slightly covers the "shame" and returns the design to the smartphone that is more familiar to the modern look. By default, this is a "cloth" (actually plastic) cover in the manner of the Moto X Force. For 1,990 rubles, you can buy something else - there are plastic of different colors, under the skin and under the tree. The smartphone itself comes in three variations - black, white-silver and white-gold (the back magnetic panel is painted with gold or silver). You can imagine the scope for combinatorics.

The replaceable modules, like the covers, are magnetically attached to the back - in one motion and very securely. Implemented this is really great. And in general, in terms of thoughtfulness and quality of performance, Moto Z first of all suggests an iPhone. Moreover, the absence of a 3.5 mm jack is striking. As a result, we find a USB Type-C to mini-jack adapter in the kit. But the cable "USB Type-C - USB Type-A" is not in the box, the wire to the complete charger for some reason, soldered tightly. If you want to connect your smartphone to your computer, buy the cable separately. An inexplicable decision, to be honest.

But in the box there is a translucent bumper - it seems that the complete set was invented using a random number generator.

However, the surprises do not end there, Moto Z is a truly unusual gadget. Under the screen we see a square area - here, as you might guess, there is a built-in fingerprint scanner, as well as the Home key ... But no, the last statement is incorrect - this is only Fingerprint's scanner. And the Home button is virtual here, located on the screen. Why? Why?! Apparently because they could. But I lied a little - in fact, with this key, touch-sensitive by the way, with a vibration response (again iPhone?), You can turn off and turn on the display in one motion.

The scanner, by the way, is a classic, capacitive one, it works very quickly and stably - if you don't damage or get your finger dirty. Everything is at a standard high level for a modern flagship smartphone. Using the scanner, you can only unlock the device or make (in the future) purchases via Android Pay.

On the sides of the scanner, and this is most noticeable in the light version of the Moto Z, there are two microphones. There are four of them in total: one more is located on the upper edge and on the back panel (bottom). They help provide superior noise cancellation so you can be heard even in strong winds or on the subway - proven. I also draw your attention to the flash for front camera above the display - this, however, was on the last generation of older Moto.

On top of that, Moto Z is the thinnest flagship smartphone today: 5.19 millimeters. Without taking into account the protruding camera, it is true - there is much more with it, but still nothing to worry about. In addition, for a gadget with a 5.5-inch display, it is very light - only 136 grams. Lovers of glass, metal and "pleasantly heavy hand", God forgive me, devices may seem lightweight - but I liked it. The device breaks the template slightly - at first glance it seems gigantic, especially after the Sony Xperia X Compact, which I used directly before Moto Z. But you instantly get used to it. Although it is, of course, impossible to use it with one hand - the screen is too big.

Add to all of the above an unusually organized camera module, where both the lens and the dual-LED flash are inscribed in one round block, and we get the most unusual looking flagship smartphone of 2016. Slightly pretentious, yes, but there were no ridiculous decisions or frills - great work, Motorola (and Lenovo)!

The smartphone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with the prospect of updating to Android 7.0 Nougat. In fact, there is no shell - we are dealing with a "clean" operating room Google system, flavored with just a handful of Moto's proprietary utilities that add a few tricks to gesture or voice control. For example, you can turn on the flashlight with a double chopping motion, and the screen turns on itself if you lift the smartphone from the table - nice little things. And no littering operating system unnecessary applications.

Replaceable modules

I managed to try two plug-in modules for Moto Z - JBL column and Hasselblad PV module. First of all, attention is drawn to the big names of partner companies. Nobody admits (at least in the foreseeable future) how great is the contribution of Harman or the famous Swedes to the development of these things, - I recall the experience of Leica and Huawei in the creation of mobile cameras: there is every reason to believe that a well-deserved company is involved only with its own name and authority. However, these are only assumptions.

And the modules themselves turned out to be very interesting. First of all, attention is drawn to the ease of use. They are attached to the case instantly and very reliably - the magnetic system is invented and implemented perfectly. To remove them, you just need to grab the groove and apply minimal force. No switches, additional blocking buttons - an extremely intuitive and simple system.

There is no need to download and install additional software - a single preinstalled app Moto Mods, which independently recognizes the module connected to this moment, and rebuilds the system to use it. An additional battery icon appears in the status bar, if we are talking about a column, the camera interface changes, if we connect the Hasselblad module, the smartphone is perfectly ready for this.

Externally, the Moto Z, of course, is not changing for the better, turning from the thinnest flagship smartphone to the thickest and most bulky. But also quite within reason.

MotoJBLSoundboost. One of the most logical modules that provides a smartphone with enough powerful sound, so that he would not be ashamed to be the center of an impromptu party. However, this is about the level of JBL Clip, if you look for analogs in external mobile speakers of the same brand. Power and detail even level JBL Charge miniature Soundboost will not give - but the thing is quite convenient and compact.

Hasselblad True Zoom transforms Moto Z (as well as Moto Z Play) into heir to glory (if I may use that word here) Samsung Galaxy Zoom and Samsung Galaxy Camera. Outwardly, the new creation of Motorola / Lenovo really looks like them: a huge touchscreen display on one side and a digital camera on the other - with a perforated protrusion for gripping with the right hand, a very protruding lens even when turned off, an impressive flash and even an autofocus illumination lamp. Separately, the build-up in the lower part of the lens rim is amusing - an obvious stylization under the button for releasing the lens from the mount. The main thing that the Hasselblad module gives to the smartphone user is 10x optical zoom.

The characteristics of the camera are quite common for a modern compact. A matrix with dimensions 1 / 2.3 '' with a resolution of 12 megapixels and optics with focal lengths of 4.5-45 mm (35-mm equivalent - 25-250 mm) are used. In addition to the optical zoom, there is also a 4x digital zoom - the usual crop, which reduces the image resolution. There is no built-in battery in Hasselblad True Zoom - it will consume the resources of the smartphone.

The saddest thing about this module is the optical aperture: f / 3.5-6.5. Despite the fact that at a wide angle the original camera moto Z has an aperture of f / 1.8 - even taking into account the use of a smaller sensor (1/3 '') at the same resolution, the image quality is better - thanks to the significantly lower ISO, the noise is not so annoying. But the optical stabilizer is effective - even at the maximum zoom, more or less decent, blur-free pictures are obtained.

Autofocus is not very well implemented - it is a conventional contrast system that works very slowly and from time to time incorrectly. The minimum focusing distance at a wide angle is 5 cm.

The camera interface is also frustrating. This is Hasselblad! I would like at least minimal control over the process - but there is only an automatic mode and several plot modes to choose from. But you can record RAW - but the icon for working with an uncompressed image format repeats the usual one; strange negligence. By the way, Leica-Huawei is reminded not only of its extensive branding, but also an additional monochrome shooting mode.

What pleased me was the speed of work. The module has its own power button, it activates the camera application, and instantly - the "trunk" of the lens extends in less than a second. There is also a shutter button with a zoom control lever, it is quite convenient to work with the camera.

Examples of shooting with the Hasseblad True Zoom module

The quality of the pictures is not impressive - for the better, in comparison with the camera of the smartphone itself, the dynamic range differs first of all, but in terms of color rendition and work in the dark, I liked the built-in Moto Z camera more. But, again, a Hasselblad True Zoom user gets an offer that is virtually unique for a smartphone - an optical zoom.

By the way, you cannot shoot 4K video using the module - only Full HD. And if you remove it and simply shoot it on a smartphone, then no problem. Smells a little phantasmagoria.

The price of the module is, however, 19,990 rubles - you can also think about buying a full-fledged camera with a large sensor and built-in Wi-Fi in order to transfer files to a smartphone and not lose efficiency.

The most logical module available today is an additional Incipio offGRID battery at a price of 3,990 rubles - it is really useful and much more convenient to use than a power bank. Lenovo is promising to greatly expand its plug-in fleet - and it will be very interesting to see what else you can think of in this particular area.

Motorola's and LG's approach to implementing the idea of a modular smartphone is fundamentally different. We will tell you about our impressions of the first practical acquaintance with the device.

The mobile phone market is stagnating and technical innovations are rare. Lenovo wants to make a difference with its new Motorola-branded product: the Moto Z and the big Moto Z Force are supposed to be not only a smartphone, but also a projector, audio system and more.

LG is already using a similar concept. However, the implementation of the idea is fundamentally different: while LG offers additional modules that can be inserted directly into the device, Motorola decided to use open connectors on the back side of the case, to which the modules are connected in the form of overlays fixed with a magnet.

Moto Z: a mobile phone that can be a projector

At Tech World, Lenovo unveiled three production-ready Moto Mods: speaker system JBL SoundBoost Speaker, Insta-Share Projector pico projector (according to the manufacturer, it is capable of producing images up to 70 inches) and a battery pack that should extend the time autonomous work smartphone for 22 hours.

As tempting as all of the above may sound, Lenovo's approach to modular technology implementation has one drawback: the phone does not look very elegant with additional modules.

The Moto Mods platform is open to third-party developers, so the appearance of new modules, such as extensions to work with a camera or a docking station to turn a smartphone into a PC, is quite expected. To promote the project, the manufacturer is ready to provide all kinds of support to developers, including financial.

Customizable design

As is the case with other Motorola phones, for example, the Moto X Play, the Moto Z can also be customized. Customers will be offered various Moto Style Shells to choose from - rear covers made of wood, leather and fabric, which are removable and interchangeable.

In addition, there are several "design" samples. Among others, Lenovo names models from kate spade new york, TUMI and Incipio.

Moto Z and Moto Z Force cost and release date

The start of sales should be given in September 2016, but Lenovo has not yet said anything about the cost of new smartphones, as well as Moto Mods.

  • Dimensions: 75.3 x 155.3 x 5.19 mm

The Moto Z is radically different from anything we've seen before from this manufacturer. The smartphone is very thin at only 5.2 mm (for comparison, the iPhone 7 has a 7.3 mm body). On the front there is an abundance of sensors and microphones, on the back there is a round camera module in the form of a Moto 360 watch display. The device looks more like a futuristic concept. Such a gadget is definitely not to be confused with others.

The abundance of sensors is, of course, technologically advanced, but frankly ugly. And the camera protrudes by as much as 3 mm. In a word, out of habit, the appearance of a smartphone causes irritation and dislike. But, as they say, you get used to everything. So after a week you stop noticing all these roughness.

The Moto Z body is made of metal, with a glass insert on the back. The device is assembled with high quality. However, Motorola was famous for its solid build quality. There will be three colors on sale: silver, gold and black. The latter, by the way, is the most advantageous option: all these numerous sensors and holes are not so noticeable on it. But we have, as you can see, golden.

The back of the Moto Z looks cool, but the bezel will take some getting used to. It is better to buy the black version: the numerous sensors and microphone holes are not so noticeable on it.

Let us emphasize right away that Moto Z is not suitable for work "naked". The fact is that the body is thin, the edges are sharp, and the dimensions are rather big - it's inconvenient to hold it in your hand, the device tries to slip out. Replaceable covers are quite a solution.

The manufacturer has provided panels from different materials that are attached to the smartphone with magnets. Putting on the lid, the Moto Z experience changes dramatically. It is comfortable to hold, fingers do not slip, the camera does not stick out. At the same time, the smartphone remains beautiful and thin.

On sale you can find panels made of plastic, wood, fabric and leather. The cloth one comes with a smartphone, and the new one will cost 1990 rubles.

The magnets on the back of the Moto Z aren't just for replacement covers. They carry Moto Mods, which will be sold separately. The idea has been successfully implemented: modules can be quickly changed without turning off the phone. Engineers from LG, when developing the G5, did not think of this before, by the way.

There are already 6 such modules:

  • JBL speaker with stereo sound and its own battery. It costs $ 80.
  • Hasselblad photo module with 12 megapixel camera, optical stabilization and 10x zoom.
  • Two battery covers: 2200 mAh and 3000 mAh.
  • Insta Share Mini Projector for Large Projector Price: $ 300.
  • Car mount with fast charging function.

However, the modules are expensive. Battery for 4000 rubles? Thank you, I'd rather buy an external battery 5 times cheaper. Column for 5000? For the same money you can find portable acoustics several times more powerful. Only the Hasselblad photo module is of interest, but few will buy it for $ 250.

Another victim of the thin case was the headphone jack - there was no room for it (as in the case of Apple iPhone 7). Now the headphones are connected either via Bluetooth or via USB Type-C. Fortunately, the Moto Z comes with a 3.5mm adapter.

What is nice, this did not affect the sound quality. Clean, loud, but not as bass-heavy as the HTC 10. On par with other flagships: Huawei P9 Plus, LG G5 and Galaxy S7.

It's strange that there is no support for the Bluetooth aptX codec. It is needed for high quality sound when it comes to connecting headphones "over the air". That is, Motorola wants us to give up wires, but to ensure high quality I forgot the sound.

But I was impressed by the external speaker. There is only one here, but it gives out a loud and clear sound. What's nice is that the speaker is not blocked during games and watching movies.

It's too early to remove the 3.5mm jack from smartphones. Even for the sake of thickness. It's good that the Moto Z comes with an adapter.

During a conversation, the interlocutor can be heard perfectly, and the interlocutors themselves also liked the sound. This is due to the four microphones scattered throughout the Moto Z. They help out great in a noisy subway and in strong winds.

The fingerprint scanner is built into an unsightly square under the screen. This is not a key, as it might seem at first glance, and cannot be pressed. There is a sensor, but it has only two functions: when pressed for a long time, the smartphone is locked, when touched in full-screen applications, the navigation bar is pulled out.

The scanner reads prints instantly. Quickly touched the square - and the smartphone is immediately ready for use. The Moto Z is just as fast as the leaders OnePLus 3 and Huawei P9 Plus.

The Moto Z has an AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. For a 5.5-inch screen, this is more than enough. The image is clear, high-contrast. Black is perfect. The backlight brightness is high, but there is almost no headroom. That is, on a bright sunny day, the screen may be dull.

At the same time, if in the dark you twist the brightness to a minimum, the screen still remains merciless to the eyes: this is because the minimum level is not as low as we would like.

The screen is made using AMOLED technology and is energy efficient. The image is clear and contrasting, but with the brightness settings, not everything is as cool as we would like.

The weak point of Motorola flagships has always been the camera. However, the situation has changed here. Moto Z has installed a module with a resolution of 13 megapixels and an aperture of f1.8. Moreover, an optical stabilizer and laser autofocus have been added here.

During the day, the camera shoots perfectly: high detail, drawn sky, correct rendering of colors and shades. The automation works flawlessly. I liked the work of the automatic HDR. Even against the bright sun, the processor draws out dark areas, removes glare and does not lighten bright objects.

With the onset of darkness, the focus begins to be naughty. It "hits" past, then frantically tries to grab the light source. Exposure sacrifices noise reduction: there is little grain, but moving objects are blurred. Static ones remain clear thanks to stabilization.

The front 5MP camera has a flash. At night and indoors, she will help out selfie lovers. The capture angle of the picture is large, so if you try, you can put a large company in the frame.

The camera in Moto Z has caught up with the current flagships of other manufacturers in terms of quality. But in low light it is inferior to the Samsung Galaxy S7, Google Pixel and iPhone 7 Plus.

Motorola Moto Z is one of the most fast smartphones in the world. The novelty is powered by the proven Snapdragon 820 chip with a frequency of 2.15 GHz. The same processor is in the LG G5, HTC 10, OnePlus 3. According to the results of the Moto Z tests, it is in the top three.

In Geekbench 4, the smartphone scored a suspiciously low score. Moto Z earned 5200 points from foreign colleagues. Let's write off the lags of the test sample.

RAM 4 GB, physical - either 32 or 64 GB. For most users, this will be enough, but just in case there is a slot for memory cards. Then you can increase the volume by another 256 GB. But keep in mind: the flash drive is installed instead of one of the two SIM-cards.

In reality, the smartphone works very quickly. He doesn't care what to do - launch games, play 4K videos, or keep several applications in the background. Everything is so fluid that you can't help comparing the Moto Z to the Google Pixel.

The Pixel analogy also suggests itself when looking at the system. Motorola Moto Z is the only flagship that runs on pure Android. No heavy shells and a bunch of useless applications. Everything is neat and to the point. Yes, the Moto Z is not the first in the tests, but in terms of optimization it can compete with the devices of Google itself.
