After upgrading to latest version operating system Windows 10, some users complain that the keyboard does not work on the laptop.

In this article, we will analyze the reasons why the keyboard does not work on a laptop, and also present several solutions to this problem.

Before doing any of the steps below, just restart your laptop. Perhaps this will help solve the problem with a non-working keyboard on a laptop.

Solution 1 - Remove Synaptics driver

The keyboard may not work on the laptop due to outdated drivers. One of these is the Synaptics driver. Windows 10 is not fully compatible with this driver, so some users may experience keyboard issues. To fix it, you need to uninstall the Synaptics driver by following these steps:

When the computer restarts, the default driver will be installed and your laptop keyboard will start working. Some users also suggest uninstalling all drivers: HID Compliant Mouse, touch pad and other. You can also try this way.

Keep in mind that you need to restart your laptop after you uninstall all of the above drivers.

Solution 2 - Update keyboard / trackpad drivers

If your laptop keyboard isn't working, you may need to update your drivers. To do this, you should use the CD that you received with your laptop and install from it required drivers.

If these drivers didn't work (or you don't have a CD), then go to your laptop manufacturer's website and download the latest keyboard and trackpad drivers for your computer model.

To go to the site, you can connect a USB keyboard or use onscreen keyboard... You can also download the required drivers on another computer and then transfer them to your laptop.

Solution 3 - Disable input filtering

Input filtering is a feature that is designed to ignore short or repetitive keystrokes. It is possible that your laptop keyboard does not work because it is enabled this function... To turn off input filtering, follow these simple steps:

Solution 4. Use the Win + Space key combination

Some users claim that they managed to deal with the laptop keyboard not working by pressing the Win + Problem key combination.

Solution 5. Install the latest updates

Microsoft regularly improves the Windows 10 operating system with new updates. If your laptop keyboard does not work, we advise you to go to the "Center Windows updates»And download the latest updates.

Solution 6. Use a USB keyboard

Of course, this is not a solution to the problem, but you can use a separate USB keyboard while fixing the built-in laptop.

As a rule, disabling input filtering and updating all drivers will fix the problem with the laptop keyboard not working.

Each of us connects an input device to our PC. But what if it doesn't work correctly? You need to download drivers for the Windows 10 keyboard. This is one of the main computer control devices. Thanks to him, we can enter characters, write messages, search necessary information, play and so on.

All ways to download the Keyboard driver

So, you connected the input device, rebooted the PC, however, it does not work correctly. Consider the methods to download the keyboard driver for Windows 10.

Automatic installation

The new operating system itself detects connected devices and selects software... It is enough to connect the keyboard.

Device Manager

If you have connected an input device to your computer, but nothing happens, then:

  1. Right-click on the start menu.
  2. Will open context menu... Please select "Device Manager".
  3. In the window that appears, find the undefined device.
  4. Right click on it and select "Update Driver".
  5. Click on « Automatic search updated drivers ".

  6. The system itself will find, download and install keyboard drivers for Windows 10 on a laptop or computer.

    Driver.ru

    The Internet has a huge database of software for various devices driver.ru. You just need to know the keyboard model:

Desktop computers have two key input devices: the mouse and the keyboard. Therefore, when some kind of failure occurs and the keyboard / mouse stops working, then the computer actually turns into useless hardware. We have already considered, and in this article we will analyze why the keyboard of stationary PCs may refuse to work.

Checking the wires

The keyboard is connected to the system unit through two types of connectors - outdated PS / 2 or modern USB.

Initially, check the integrity of the wire itself, if there are no defects, proceed to inspect the connectors. In the case of PS / 2, the contacts of the plug are often bent; in the worst case, they can be completely broken off when the user inserts the plug with all his might, and it does not fit into the connector due to incorrect location. If you have more new keyboard connected to a computer via a USB connector, then simply switch the keyboard to another USB port, since the contacts in them may also fail. ATTENTION: it is recommended to disconnect and reconnect the keyboard when the computer is turned off, or after connecting to restart it. For example, in the case of a PS / 2 connector, there is a 90% chance that the keyboard will not work without restarting the computer.

Updating the driver

If you have a special gaming keyboard or similar multimedia ones with a bunch of additional functional buttons, then drivers should be included with them. They can also be downloaded from the manufacturers' official websites. In the case of simple keyboards, you can update the drivers using Windows itself. A software glitch may cause the keyboard driver to crash, so it needs to be reinstalled.

Open the menu Start - Control Panel - Device Manager... In the list of devices, find Keyboards, click on the selected right click mouse and click Update drivers... For Windows to update the driver itself, the computer must be connected to the Internet. If for some reason the update failed, you will have to find a driver for your keyboard model on the Internet yourself, download and install it.

As a rule, these two reasons lead to the inoperability of the keyboard on stationary PCs in 99% of cases - inoperative connector contacts and failed drivers. The remaining 1% is when the keyboard itself breaks down, as well as very exotic cases. For example, viruses that block the keyboard; flown or incorrectly set BIOS settings.

Sometimes, after starting Windows, the keyboard remains "deranged" (does not respond to keystrokes). In this case, the indicator lights on the keyboard are off.

There are two main reasons for the malfunction: hardware (the keyboard or the port to which it is connected is out of order) or software (failure to load the driver).

If the keyboard is out of order, it must be replaced with a working one (or repaired).

What to do in case of software failure?

1. You can try to restart your PC. After a reboot (if the keyboard is working properly), the operating system will "sort out" the keyboard drivers, and the incident, as a rule, should be settled.

2. You can use the keyboard without restarting the PC (the mouse should function normally!).

For this:

Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System;

In the System Properties window, open the Hardware tab -> Device Manager;

In the Device Manager window, the keyboard will be marked with a yellow circle with a black exclamation mark inside -> select it with the mouse;

Select the menu Action -> Delete;

In the Confirmation of Device Removal window, authorize the removal of the keyboard by clicking OK;

Close the Device Manager window;

On the Hardware tab of the System Properties window, click the Hardware Installation button;

In the Add New Hardware Wizard window, click Next;

After a short search for equipment, the keyboard will be "found" (the Num Lock indicator will turn on);

If the Change system settings window appears with the message “The installation of new devices is complete. A computer restart is required to complete the software installation. The new settings will take effect only after a system reboot. Reboot now? Yes / No ”, click No, since the keyboard is already working without rebooting;

In the Add New Hardware Wizard window, click Finish;

Close the System Properties window;

You can work with your "Klava".

Notes (edit)

1. The malfunction described in the article is observed on a PC with a PS / 2 keyboard.

2. The problem is usually caused by a failure to load the i8042 port driver (\ WINDOWS \ system32 \ drivers \ i8042prt.sys). Less often the keyboard class driver (\ WINDOWS \ system32 \ drivers \ kbdclass.sys) is "buggy".

3. When this malfunction occurs, two types of events are recorded in the system event log (see Can the Windows event log become fun reading?), For example:

Warning (Event Source: i8042prt; Event ID: 20; Description: Unable to set the state of the keyboard indicators);

Error (Event Source: Service Control Manager; Event ID: 7026; Description: Failed to load driver (s) reboot or system start: i8042prt).

In this article, we have to figure out an important question: why does the keyboard not type? This phenomenon is not as rare as we would like. But you shouldn't be afraid of him. Problems with are resolved without too many problems. And only in some situations it is necessary to try hard to establish the functioning of the computer component. But for what reasons can the keyboard refuse to work? And what to do in this or that case?

Damaged connector

The first case is not very common, but it does occur. Especially on older computers. For laptops, this layout is relevant only when it comes to a separately connected keyboard.

What is it about? Why isn't the keyboard typing? The problem may lie in the equipment connection connector. It sometimes breaks or gets damaged. In this situation, the keyboard cannot be connected. If using an old model (PS / 2 socket), it is advisable to change the hardware to USB. Or connect the device to another connector. You can also try to fix the nests. But this technique will not give a long-term guarantee of the device's operation.

Drivers

Why isn't the keyboard typing? The next, already more common reason, is the lack of drivers for. Especially when it comes to multifunctional, with a large number of additional buttons. If the device refused to work, it is recommended that the first thing to do is to reinstall the drivers for it. Or update them.

Typically, keyboards come with a CD with the appropriate software. Further And if the reason lies precisely in the drivers, then everything starts to work. You can optionally turn off and on the device after logging into the operating system. But everything is not always as simple as it seems. After all, a computer is a device that can present a variety of surprises. And it's not always easy to fix them. So what other options for the development of events can be identified?

Clogging

Why isn't the keyboard typing? Sooner or later, this question begins to worry almost every user. This is especially true for those who do not monitor the computer and its components at all. The keyboard won't print some letters? What to do? If we are talking about a device that has worked properly for at least a month, we can only recommend one thing - to clean the component.

The keyboard is a clogging device. Dust, food debris, crumbs - it all stays between the buttons. And we are talking about laptops and stationary computers. Therefore, all keyboards need to be cleaned from time to time. At least once a year. Or as needed. It is also recommended not to eat in front of the monitor. This technique will allow you not to clog the connected device once again. By the way, this problem is the most common scenario.

Now it is clear why the keyboard does not print. You should only pay attention to the fact that you should not clean it yourself. Especially when it comes to a novice user. And even more so, it is not recommended to clean the keyboard from the laptop yourself. Better to take the input device to a service center. Keyboard cleaning services are offered almost everywhere. In just a few hours, you can fix the problem that overtook the user. After cleaning, the keyboard will work at full strength.

Permutation

But these are not all options for the development of events. Sometimes it happens that the keyboard is typing the wrong letters. And in this situation it is very difficult to find an explanation for what is happening. After all, in fact, the device works. It's just not how it should be. There is only one reason why letters print numbers or not what is needed. This is an incorrect assembly of the device. If you take apart the keyboard, you will notice that each button has its own mechanism. The computer receives a signal from a certain key and prints this or that character. For the convenience of the user, these mechanisms are signed as buttons on the keyboard. If the latter are reversed, it appears that the machine is printing the wrong characters.

Therefore, in this situation, there is only one solution - to correctly assemble the keyboard. That is, place the mechanisms under each key in the desired order. It is very problematic to do this on your own. Therefore, it is best to take the gadget to a service center. If you don't want to think once again why the keyboard does not print, you should not wipe and wash this component on your own. Often, the problem with the wrong arrangement of buttons happens after self-cleaning. Not the most dangerous, but also not a very pleasant moment.

Incorrect assembly

Keyboard buttons not working? How to be? First, don't panic. Secondly, analyze your last actions with this device. In most cases, the user himself becomes the culprit of problems with the components connected to the computer. What to do if If the user tried to figure out the device on his own, it is recommended to immediately take it to the service center.

The reason is incorrect assembly of the input device. Most likely, when the user tried to assemble the keyboard, an important contact went away somewhere. This is a common occurrence to be aware of. You can fix this problem yourself. But users point out that in inept hands the keyboard will never work. Unless it will be completely broken. And the craftsmen usually get it right the first time and disassemble the device and assemble it so that it works fully and without interruption.

Marriage

What if the keyboard does not print? Much depends on the situation. If we are not talking about a new device, then the above options for the development of events may well be the reason for the refusal of the component from work. But what about when the conversation is about the keyboard you just bought? If all the drivers have been installed, the problem most likely has only one reason - a marriage. And here only a complete replacement of the keyboard will help. It is recommended that you immediately contact the store where the device was purchased. There it will be possible to exchange. Otherwise, you will have to buy a new gadget.

Incompatibility

What if the keyboard doesn't work? It is required to find out why the connected device refused to perform its functions. In fact, only in rare cases are serious accidents caused by users. More often than not, all problems can be solved by yourself.

Why isn't the keyboard typing? The whole point may be in the incompatibility of the device with the operating system. This problem has appeared quite recently. Most often, it is encountered by users with Windows 10. With this operating system, old models of this problem are not observed. Yes, the keyboard also has its minimum requirements. And you should pay attention to them. Because you will either have to change the device in the end, or reinstall the operating system to one that is compatible with the gadget.

Viruses

Keyboard buttons not working? This device refused to work at all? If all of the above cases do not fit, you might think about the last, rarest scenario - an infection of the operating system. Viruses are the main enemies of the stable operation of computers. They can affect not only software, but also connected devices. For example, under their negative influence, the keyboard either does not print, or displays the wrong characters, or it even puts down several letters / numbers at a time.

There are two ways out: reinstalling the operating system from scratch or disinfecting the computer from the corresponding infection. In the first case, you will have to completely format the hard drive, only then reinstall the OS. And the second option, as a rule, is not effective enough. For this reason, it is recommended that you save all data and reinstall the operating system on your computer. So the virus will disappear 100%.

Any USB keyboard can suddenly outgrow it - even an ordinary budget one, even with an advanced design, backlighting and a bunch of additional buttons. USB keyboards are not much, but still more vulnerable than PS / 2 keyboards. The list of possible causes of problems with the PS / 2 keyboard is small: as a rule, problems arise either with the keyboard itself, or with the wire, or with the motherboard connector. The range of possible causes of problems with USB keyboards is slightly wider, respectively, due to the USB interface itself. The possible reasons for a non-working USB keyboard and how to get out of the situation will be discussed below.

1. Pull-out wire

If the USB keyboard worked successfully, and then at some particular moment stopped responding to input, you should first check if the wire is pulled out of the USB port on the computer. Even if the wire is in place, you can temporarily remove it from the USB port and insert it again after a couple of seconds.

2. Another USB port

If the previous method did not give successful results, you need to reconnect the keyboard to a different USB port. This will either expose the problematic USB port on the computer or rule out one possible cause of the problem. After a malfunction motherboard due to a power surge, one or more USB ports may stop working while others remain functional. If the keyboard does not work with any of the USB ports, you need to check the functionality of the USB ports themselves by connecting any other device to them - a USB flash drive, mobile device, printer, etc. If all USB ports on the computer turn out to be inoperative, then the problem will need to be solved with them.

A keyboard connected to USB 3.0 (blue output port) may not work during the Windows installation process until the drivers are installed on the motherboard. In this case, the keyboard must be reconnected to USB 2.0 (white output port).

3. Reinstalling the driver

If reconnecting to a different USB port does not work, you need to check if the keyboard works in the BIOS environment. The fact of a successful entry into the BIOS and moving the navigation keys through its sections will mean that the problem has occurred at the level of the Windows OS. In this case, you can try reinstalling the keyboard drivers. This can be done in the Windows Device Manager. You can get into it in Windows 7 by calling the "Start" menu and selecting "Control Panel".

In Windows 8.1 and 10 systems, the path is shorter: Device Manager is directly accessible from the context menu on the Start button.

Directly in the device manager window, open the "Keyboards" section, on the "HID Keyboard" item, call the context menu and remove the driver.

We confirm the decision.

We reboot the computer.

After rebooting, the keyboard driver will be installed automatically.

For certain models of USB keyboards, manufacturers may provide their own drivers supplied with those keyboards. This point needs to be clarified, and if so, then the driver must be installed manually by downloading it on the manufacturer's website or by finding the installation disk in the keyboard delivery kit.

4. Enabling USB keyboard support controller in BIOS

A malfunction of the motherboard (as a consequence of the same power surge) can cause the USB keyboard support controller to be disabled in the BIOS settings. It is not often, however, it happens that the USB controller for keyboard support at the BIOS level is disabled initially. This nuance will make itself felt only when the need arises for the computer to work in pre-boot mode. Until then, Windows will use the USB keyboard by its own means. Of course, in such cases, you cannot do without a PS / 2 keyboard, and if it is not stored anywhere, just in case, it will need to be borrowed from someone for a while. Alternative option- using an adapter USB - PS / 2.

What should I do after entering BIOS? V BIOS settings you need to find the USB keyboard support controller parameter. These are usually labeled "Keyboard Support" or "Legasy USB Support". The UEFI BIOS may simply be called "USB Support". Having found, you need to check that the value opposite is not "Disabled" (disabled), but "Enabled" (enabled). The "Enabled" value must also be in the "USB Controller" parameter. For example, in AMI BIOS version 17.9, USB controllers are configured in the Integrated Peripherals section.

5. Faulty keyboard

And, finally, the simplest test for checking the operability of the USB keyboard itself is connecting it to another computer device.

Have a great day!

Probably, each of us faced a similar situation: you turned on the computer, try to enter text on the keyboard or switch from one window to another, but the keys do not respond to pressing, and the device itself does not show any signs of life. What caused this behavior of the device? Why isn't the keyboard working on my computer or laptop? And how do you fix it? Let's consider what the reasons may be.

Mechanical damage

The simplest explanation is mechanical damage to the keyboard. Perhaps you recently spilled coffee or sweet tea on it, accidentally dropped it, pulled the wire, etc., and then safely forgot about it. In this case, all you have to do is disassemble the device and try to fix it yourself, or contact the service center. The second option is preferable, especially when it comes to the laptop keyboard. If the keyboard cannot be brought back to life, you will have to purchase a new input device.

Lost contact

Sometimes keyboard problems are caused by improperly connecting the device to the computer. Check if the plug fits tightly into the socket on the system unit, if the fragile parts of the connector are not bent. If necessary, straighten them carefully with tweezers and try plugging the keyboard back in.

If you are using a wireless keyboard, it is worth checking to see if the battery is dead. Very often, the problem disappears without a trace as soon as the power source is replaced.

No matching driver

Why does the keyboard on the computer not work if the contact is not broken, and the device itself is not damaged?

Perhaps the system simply cannot find a driver for the device. In this case, you need to update your computer software.

You can do this manually by visiting the website of your keyboard manufacturer.

Manual driver update

  • go to the official website of the manufacturer;
  • find the appropriate section, select your device model;
  • download the archive and unpack it. Sometimes the driver has its own automatic installer, in which case you just need to click "Run file";
  • if there is no automatic program, launch the "Device Manager";
  • select "Update drivers", in the dialog that opens, select manual search, write the path to the folder into which you unpacked the archive;
  • after installation, restart the computer.

There is another way to update your drivers. It is often recommended on thematic forums when the participant does not know why the keyboard does not work on a Windows 7 computer or another OS. You won't have to search for manufacturers' websites, but you will need to install additional programs to update drivers. For example Driver Genius Professional or Driver Checker. These utilities are paid, but if you wish, you can find a replacement for them among free software (DriverMax Free, etc.).

Viruses attacked

Sometimes the operation of input devices is blocked as a result of the activity of malware. If you do not know why the keyboard on a laptop or computer does not work, and with it the touchpad and mouse, then the matter is most likely a virus infection of the system. What to do in this case?

and how can I fix it? Forgotten your computer password? Don't worry - in our article you will find information on how to recover it.

Check the system with an antivirus as soon as possible. If the antivirus did not identify a potential threat or simply turned off, use additional utilities. The Dr.Web CureIt! Program is very effective in such situations. You can download this anti-virus utility on the official website of the Dr.Web laboratory. For the treatment of home computers, the program is free. The most important advantage of the utility is its high reliability: the program will work even if the virus tries to turn off the computer and block it during the scan.

You can also advise the development of Kaspersky studio, AVZ. Like Dr.Web CureIt !, the program is free. Updated regularly. It has several configuration options, which allows you to most effectively identify not only viruses and spyware, but also possible system vulnerabilities. Quickly removes "computer infection", gives many useful recommendations.

Keyboard just not plugged in in BIOS

Finally, the last reason for the "lifelessness" of the device is the lack of connection in the BIOS. This case is typical for netbooks and laptops, i.e. devices with a built-in keyboard. How to fix the situation?

Very simple. Turn off the computer, then turn it on again. Before the operating system starts loading, load the BIOS. Usually you need to click the Delete button to do this, but there may be other options. Sometimes the BIOS is activated with the F2 or F8 keys (depending on the manufacturer of the computer). The hint at the bottom of the screen (if there is one) can help determine which button to press.

Then we find in the BIOS a tab that lists all the input / output devices. We select the item with the name "USB Controller", set the mode "Enabled" ("Enabled"). Go to the "USB Keyboard Setup" item and repeat the operation, set the "Enabled" mode. Then we confirm saving the changes and exit the BIOS. Reboot and test the keyboard.

Sometimes the BIOS does not support USB keyboards. In this case, it is better to entrust the computer setup to professionals from the service center, since you need to reinstall the BIOS. It is quite difficult to do it yourself.
