How to transfer bookmarks from Firefox to another computer. Exporting and importing bookmarks from the browser How to export bookmarks from firefox

How to import bookmarks to from another browser? This question was probably asked by every user of this browser.

Import and export of bookmarks may be required when updating, replacing, rolling back, etc.

Therefore, users often think about whether this can be done quickly and in the least labor-intensive way.

Read about how to correctly save, move, and export bookmark files from browsers in our material.

Synchronization

The method is based on the principle of creating a single account for all your devices with a given browser. That is, you need to create an account and log in to it.

All bookmarks will be saved to cloud storage on the developer's server.

When you sign in to this account again, but from a different browser (reinstalled or installed on a different device), you will be able to access these bookmarks.

The situation is more complicated when importing bookmarks from other browsers. There is no automatic import configured for them, so you will have to carry out the process manually.

And this is quite a long time.

The principle of this method is that when saving the first link, the browser creates a file of one format or another (most often, ).

You need to find this file on your computer and move it to the new browser. You can also save it on and transfer it to another PC.

Sometimes such a file must be created manually if the browser used internal reserves for saving rather than an external file (which happens quite rarely).

So, in order to transfer “saves” from another browser, proceed as follows:

  1. Launch this browser (in the example the browser from Yandex is used);
  2. Go to its settings - in the case of this browser, it was necessary to click the button with three stripes on the right side of the window header;
  3. Click on the “Settings” section;
  4. In the window that opens, find the “Bookmarks” item and go to it;

<Рис. 7 Настройки>

  1. In the upper right corner of the new window there is a button “Arrange”, click on it;
  2. In the drop-down menu, find the item "Export to HTML file";
  3. Click on it;

<Рис. 8 Экспорт>

  1. A standard Windows Explorer window will open;
  2. Indicate in it the name of the file to be created and the location where you want to save it.

Now you need to proceed directly to importing the resulting file into Firefox. To do this, launch your browser and go to its “Bookmarks”.

Once the Library opens, click on "Import and backups".

Select a section from the drop-down menu "Import bookmarks from an HTML file". The usual System Explorer window will open again.

Find the file created earlier through it and double-click on it with the left mouse button.

Export

Often the user needs to reinstall the browser. For example, if a newer version has been released. Or if the installed browser malfunctions.

In case of reinstallation, replacing outdated Firefox with a newer Firefox, transferring saved links is not difficult.

The easiest way is to enable browser synchronization. But you can also use manual transfer, creating a backup bookmark file.

The advantages of this method are obvious. First of all, this is its high accuracy. The user can be sure that all information will be saved and will not be duplicated.

This method is very versatile. Since the data file is in the format, it is easily recognized by all other browsers.

Therefore, in this way you can transfer bookmarks from different browsers, while synchronization works quite clearly only with browsers from the same developer.

How to create such a universal file? Proceed according to the algorithm:

  1. Launch the Firefox browser;
  2. In the upper right corner, find the bookmarks panel button and click on it with the left mouse button;
  3. In the drop-down menu, at the top of it, find the section "Show all bookmarks";

<Рис. 10 Панель закладок>

  1. A window called “Library” will open;
  2. In the side menu on the left side of the window, click on "Bookmarks bar";
  3. In the expanded sub-items in the same field, select the category of “saved files” that we will transfer;
  4. After clicking on it, at the top of the window, to the left of the search bar, find the “Import and backups” button and left-click on it;
  5. In the drop-down menu, click on "Export bookmarks to HTML file";

<Рис. 11 Библиотека>

  1. Write the name of the new file in the window that opens, and also indicate the location where it will be most convenient to save it.

After transferring it to another browser, all “saves” are copied.

<Рис. 12 Создание файла закладок>

This file is especially convenient because it is completely mobile. It can be saved to a flash drive.

In this way, it is possible to transfer it to another PC and copy it to the browser installed there.

The method is good, for example, when transferring saved addresses from a PC to a laptop or from a laptop to a tablet.

Alternative method

Working with an HTML file is not always convenient. In cases where this method is not very convenient, you can use another one, namely, creating a backup copy.

To create such a recovery copy, do the following:

  1. Go to the “Library” section in the same way as already described above;
  2. In the menu on the left side of the window, click on the “Bookmarks Menu” section
  3. Find the button in the window header "Import and backups";
  4. Left-click on this button;
  5. Select the required item from the drop-down list ( "Create backups");
  6. After this, the system will automatically create a data file that can be imported into another Firefox browser.

<Рис. 13 Альтернативный метод>

The advantages of this method are its relative speed and simplicity. The disadvantage of the method is its limitations. In this way, you can transfer data exclusively from Firefox to Firefox.

This method is not suitable for transfer to,

If you decide to use Firefox, you don't have to re-bookmark resources that you've already bookmarked in another browser. Luckily, you can quickly import them from another web browser.

What the process of importing bookmarks looks like

In total, there are two most basic ways to import bookmarks from another browser into Firefox:

  • Using an HTML file. In this case, you will have to download in advance all the data you are interested in from another browser into an HTML file and load it into Firefox. This option is convenient because it allows you to always keep the necessary tabs at hand. However, you will have to spend some time on its implementation;
  • Automatic transfer. In this case, Mozilla does everything on its own, but it is worth considering that the quality of the work done may not always meet expectations.

Option 1: Upload an HTML file

First, you need to download all the bookmarks from your old browser into a separate HTML file. Let's look at how this can be done using the Opera browser as an example:

  1. Open Opera. Unfortunately, the functionality of this web browser does not provide built-in tools by default for uploading user data to an HTML file, so you will have to install a special extension.
  2. Click on the Opera logo in the upper left part of the screen. In the context menu, click on "Extensions".
  3. Another submenu will appear where you need to select "Load extensions".

  4. In the search bar located in the upper right part of the window, enter the name "Bookmarks Import & Export" and press Enter to start searching.

  5. Go to the very first search option.
  6. Click on the button "Add to Opera", which is located in the upper right corner.

  7. The installation of the extension will take some time. Upon completion, the button will turn green again, but the inscription on it will change to "Installed". In the top toolbar you will see the icon of the installed extension.
  8. Now click on the Opera logo, and in the context menu that opens, select the option "About the program".

  9. Copy the parameter value "Profile".

  10. Click on the icon of the newly installed extension in the top bar of the browser.
  11. Here click on the button "Choose File".

  12. Will open "Conductor", where you need to enter the copied address in the top line.
  13. Find the file here bookmarks, select it and click on the button "Open".

  14. On the open page with the extension, click on the button "Export".

  15. The file will be downloaded to the folder "Downloads", which is the default.

Once you have an HTML file with all the user data, you need to load it into Firefox:

  1. Click on the icon in the form of three stripes, which is located in the top toolbar.
  2. In the context menu, select "Library".

  3. Now click on "Bookmarks".

  4. A list of all main bookmarks in the browser will be shown. To proceed to download the HTML file, you need to click on the button "Show all bookmarks".

  5. A window will open where you need to click on the item "Import and backups". In the context menu, click on "Import bookmarks from HTML files".

  6. In the system "Explorer" specify the path to the file with HTML data from your old browser. Select it and click on "Open".

  7. Wait until the data transfer is complete and restart your browser.

Option 2: Automatic transfer

This method is less labor-intensive and does not require an HTML file with bookmarks on your computer. The bottom line is this:

Mozilla Firefox is trying to do everything to make it as convenient as possible for users to switch to the new browser. If you use one of the proposed instructions, the transfer of user information will not take more than 5 minutes.

Bookmarks or bookmarks are favorite tabs that you save in your browser in order to quickly and easily find the Internet pages you like. Over time, each user accumulates a whole library of such bookmarks. This collection turns into quite a great value, which is a shame to lose. In this article, we will tell you how to correctly transfer your favorite tabs from one device to another within the Mozilla browser, as well as from the Mozilla Firefox browser to another browser.

In addition, you will receive useful information on how to easily backup your favorite tabs (bookmarks) in Mozilla. And there is a separate article on how to sort or.

I’ll please you right away: by following the instructions in this article, you will save all your favorite tabs when transferring from one browser to another. Both those that you transfer and those that already exist in another browser will be saved.

Let's look at two transfer options:

  1. When you need to transfer bookmarks from one computer to another. At the same time, Firefox is installed on both computers.
  2. When you need to transfer bookmarks to another browser. Let's say Chrome.

How to transfer bookmarks from Firefox to another computer

Attention! Whatever you do with your favorite tabs, I highly recommend that you first make a backup copy from which you can then easily restore the original state. About creating a backup copy below.

When might you need to transfer bookmarks to another computer? Let's say you purchased a laptop and installed your usual Mozilla on it. Or another case, you wanted to install your favorite browser on your office computer. But what is a browser without bookmarks?!

Meanwhile, transferring everything is very simple. This is done in three steps:

  • The first step is to create a backup file of your Firefox browser bookmarks.
  • The second step is to transfer the file to another computer.
  • The third step is to restore Firefox browser bookmarks from a backup file.

Attention! When transferring bookmarks to another computer in this way, It is assumed that there are no bookmarks saved in the Mozilla browser on the second computer. Because when we make such a transfer, all favorite tabs, if they exist, will be completely replaced by new ones. That is, old bookmarks will simply be deleted.

Great, you say, but what should you do if there are already some bookmarks in the Firefox browser on another device and you need to save them. That is, we are talking about combine all favorite tabs. At the end of the article I’ll tell you about this. How to add bookmarks from one Firefox browser to another browser. So, let's take it in order.

1 Create a backup file of Firefox browser bookmarks

In the upper right part of the working window of your Mozilla browser, click on the star icon. In the window that opens, select the very last menu item “Show all bookmarks”. These actions can be replaced by pressing the hot keys Ctrl+Shift+B.

Show all bookmarks

A window called “Library” will open separately from the browser. In the library menu we are interested in the “Import and backups” button. Click it. In the drop-down list, select the line “Create a backup copy...”.

After that, in the Windows Explorer that opens, select the folder in which the file will be saved and click “Save.” By default, the file name is assigned in this format: “bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd”. The current date is used as the date format yyyy-mm-dd. From this file you can always restore Firefox bookmarks to the corresponding date. In addition, the convenience of such a file name is that you will always know exactly when you last made a backup.

The file is ready, now you need to transfer it to another computer.

2 Transfer a file to another computer

I think everything is clear here. The file obtained as a result of export can be sent by mail, or literally “physically” transferred using a flash drive or any drive, via cloud storage.

3 Restoring bookmarks in the Firefox browser from a backup file

Now, in the second Firefox browser, where we want to transfer everything, we need to do all the same steps as in the first one, when we created a backup copy of our favorite bookmarks from the browser to a file. The only difference is that in the drop-down list you now need to select the “Restore backup from” option. There will be two fundamentally different possibilities.

  1. Restore the backup from the list of copies that Mozila saved independently.
  2. Select the file from which we want to restore bookmarks manually.

Moreover, if you have never backed up your bookmarks on another computer, in another Mozilla browser, then, of course, you will not have any options other than “Select file”. Actually, this is exactly the option we need. After all, we don’t just restore, we transfer bookmarks from Firefox to another computer. Press sequentially:

  1. Import and backups.
  2. Restore backup from
  3. Select a file.

The last click will be on the “Open file” button. Voila! All bookmarks have been transferred to another computer.

Now let's look at the second option, when you need to transfer bookmarks from Firefox to another browser.

How to Transfer Bookmarks from Firefox to Chrome

2 Transfer the created file to another computer

There is no need to explain anything here.

3 Import bookmarks from an HTML file into the Chrome browser

Open the Chrome browser.

  1. In the upper right corner of the working window, click the three vertical dots.
  2. Select “Bookmarks” from the menu list that opens.
  3. Another menu list will appear, click “Import bookmarks and settings.”

In the window that opens, by default, import bookmarks from Microsoft Edge is set. (Whoever doubts it, of course, it is necessary to make it as easy as possible for users to switch from the main competitor). Select the last item from the drop-down list. “HTML file with bookmarks” and specify the path to the file.

Click the long-awaited “Import” button. All bookmarks from the file will be transferred to the Chrome browser, to the “Import Completed” folder. Click "Done". Here you can also switch the “Show bookmarks bar” switch to the “on” position. This only affects the display of the bookmarks bar at the top of the browser, just below the browser's address bar. Toggle display of bookmarks on or off You can change your browser settings at any time.

Transfer bookmarks from Firefox to Chrome when the browsers are on the same computer

Perhaps the simplest option. Open Chrome. Next, find the “Import bookmarks and settings” item in the menu

Now, select Mozilla Firefox from the menu, and then click “Import”. All bookmarks will be transferred. Just as in the case of transfer from an HTML file, bookmarks will be placed in the “Import Completed” folder.

Now one more small nuance.

How to find bookmarks transferred from Firefox

I repeat once again, Chrome does not delete the bookmarks that you have created in it. A folder with the original name “Import Complete” is created for imported bookmarks.

If Chrome already has many different bookmarks or folders with them, then this newly created folder may not fit in the bookmarks bar, which is displayed under the address bar. It's OK. You will find it using the Dispatcher. You can open it either by pressing Ctrl+Shift+O or using the menu:

  1. Click the vertical three dots in the top right corner of Chrome.
  2. Select Bookmarks.
  3. Now, click “Bookmark Manager”.

There is a search in the manager, “Search in bookmarks”. Good for those who try to save the entire Internet in their browser. So either use it, or, if there are not many folders, just look through them in the list. Here, in the bookmark manager, you can easily.

In this simple way, you can transfer bookmarks from Firefox to another computer and to another browser.

Finally, the last task.

How to add bookmarks (merge) from one Firefox browser to another

Now, based on all previous knowledge, this is quite easy to do. In order for new bookmarks from one Mozilla to be added to other bookmarks in another, you just need to use another browser as a clipboard or intermediary, as you wish. We will use Chrome, for this we practiced with it throughout the article.

So, we do it like this:

  1. Moving favorite tabs from first Mozillas in Chrome. See above: How to transfer bookmarks from Firefox to Chrome.
  2. Importing bookmarks from Chrome into second Mozilla, the one on another device, to the bookmarks of which you need to add content first.

I'll move straight to the second step.

Using the hotkeys Ctrl+Shift+B open the Firefox library

At the next stage, we can select only those positions that we need by checking the boxes. I chose only “Bookmarks”, because I don’t need other data.

Actually, that's all. Then click the “Done” button. And you will have bookmarks from chrome in a separate folder, which is called: “From Google Chrome”. By the way, you can rename it, for example, “Bookmarks from Firefox from another computer...” or something similar.

I think we all have websites that you visit from time to time. So, in order not to search for them for a long time, you need to add such pages to your browser bookmarks. But what if you need to reinstall the web browser, or you want to change the version of the operating system, so you will have to install all the programs again?

In a previous article, I wrote about how to import (export) bookmarks into Opera. You can read it at the link.

In this article we will deal with the question: how to import or export bookmarks in Mozilla Firefox. This topic may be raised for various reasons. For example, you want to start working in your favorite browser on a laptop, but at the same time a lot of useful pages are saved in a web browser on your computer, etc. This means that you need to make sure that the bookmarks on your laptop have the same links as those on your computer.

Import

There are two ways to import a list of saved sites into Mozilla Firefox.

From another browser

In the first case, you can import them from another browser. To do this, click on the button in the form of a list in the upper right corner, and select the item from the drop-down menu "Show all …" or use the key combination Ctrl+Alt+B.

In the window that opens, click on the button in the top menu "Import and backups". Next, from the drop-down list, select the item "Import data from another browser".

A window opens in which, using a marker, you need to select the browser from which the import will be performed. Click the “Next” button.

All browsers that, like Mozilla, are installed on your computer will be shown here. If they also contain sites that are important to you and you need to work with them in Firefox, then mark the desired browser with a marker.

The next window will display a message that the import was completed successfully. Click “Finish”.

Now on "Bookmark Bars" A new folder “From Google Chrome” will appear, because I imported them from there. Clicking on it will open a list of sites that were previously saved in Chrome.

From file

The second method allows you to import your favorite sites from an HTML file. Click on the list icon again and select from the drop-down menu "Show all…".

From the top menu of the window that opens, select "Import and backups", and from the drop-down list click on the item "Import... from HTML file".

A window opens in which you need to select a file in html format in which the bookmarks from the browser were saved. Such an HTML file can be saved: on a computer, on a flash drive, or in cloud storage. Which is very convenient in cases when you want to transfer the addresses of important sites from a computer to a laptop, or from one computer to another. Select the selected file with the mouse and click “Open”.

That's all - now the bookmarks from the selected file will appear in the corresponding list in Firefox.

Export

Exporting bookmarks to an HTML file in the Firefox browser will allow you to save all important Internet pages after an unexpected browser crash, use them on another device, or open them in another browser.

Click on the “Bookmarks” icon and select from the drop-down menu "Show all…".

Firefox automatically backs up your bookmarks and stores the fifteen most recent backups for emergencies. This article covers how to restore your bookmarks from an automatically created backup created by Firefox, how to manually create and restore backups yourself, and how to transfer your bookmarks to another computer.

  • If your bookmarks in Firefox suddenly become unavailable, read the article Recovering missing or missing bookmarks to resolve the problem.

Backup and Restore

Manual archiving

Restoring from an archive

Attention: Restoring bookmarks from an archive will result in overwriting the current set of your bookmarks with the set of bookmarks from the archive file.

Transferring bookmarks to another computer

Using Firefox Sync

You can use Firefox sync to transfer bookmarks from one computer to another.

Important: Firefox sync constantly updates data as you change bookmarks, so it is not a real backup service, and is not intended for such use.

Firefox Sync is the best way to sync your bookmarks (and other profile data) across all the computers you use. Read How do I set up Sync on my computer? for setup instructions.

Using a bookmark backup file

You can also use a bookmarks backup file from one computer to restore it to another computer. This is useful if for some reason you cannot synchronize bookmarks on two computers.

The bookmarks backup file can be either (see above) or one of the automatically created date-based backups located inside the bookmarkbackups subfolder of the Firefox profile folder. Place the bookmarks backup file on a portable storage medium (such as a flash drive) and copy it to the desktop (or anywhere) of another computer. You can then restore the backup from the Firefox Libraries window using the Select File... menu item, as described in the section above.

Restoring bookmarks after an update or rollback for Windows 10

After upgrading or downgrading the Windows 10 operating system, a directory called Windows.old is created, and most of the data erased during the upgrade or downgrade is stored there. One particularly useful element is Firefox Bookmarks. Follow the instructions above
