PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Like any other file manager with roots in Norton Commander, TC consists of two panels, in each of which you can display the contents of various drives and folders. This is convenient in that it makes it easy carry over and copyfiles and entire folders from one place to another. It also becomes convenient comparethe contents of various folders among themselves and synchronize directory contents. By the way, TC can compare the contents of individual files.

The file manager makes moving between different directories (folders) much easier. Directories that have to be visited more often than others can be saved in a special custom menuwhich is called at any time by pressing the key combination Ctrl + D... Like the browser, Total Commander contains buttons in its toolbar Forward and Back to, which also makes it easier to move between different directories.

TC works not only with local disks of a computer, but also provides a full service for working in a local network. The user can connect and disconnect network drives, open other network users access to their own drives and directories.

Almost any operation supported by Total Commander (move, delete, copy, rename, etc.) can be performed on a single file, a group of files or an entire folder (including its subdirectories). At the same time, the procedures for selecting and highlighting files for the subsequent execution of any actions on them are very simple. The user can select files, as in Windows Explorer, using the mouse and keys Shift and Ctrland also using the keys Insert and a numeric keypad as implemented in Norton Commander. In addition, selection is available using masks. For example, the user can specify the mask * .doc so that all MS Word documents are selected in the current folder.

Total Commander has a very powerful tool file search... You can search for files by mask (using regular expressions) in any specified folders and subdirectories. Moreover, the file manager will find individual files matching the search criteria, even inside archives of all supported formats. You can search for files:

created and modified in user-specified time interval,

certain size and having certain attributes (archived, hidden, read-only, system).

It is especially convenient that the search terms can be saved as a file for later use.

The file manager makes it easier to work with zipped files... Built into it unpackers several archive formats: ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, TAR, GZ, CAB and ACE. Therefore, no additional software is required to extract files from archives of the listed formats.

In addition, Total Commander has several built-in packers, therefore, it allows you to create archives in ZIP, TAR, GZ and TGZ formats without installing the appropriate archiving programs. If the user needs to create an ARJ, RAR, LHA, ACE or UC2 archive, he just needs to tell the file manager the location of the corresponding archivers so that the proper archive is created. Thus, for any operations with archives, the user does not need to leave Total Commander.

Total Commander shows the volume of files or their groups, as well as the space that these files actually occupy on the disk.

Total Commander has a powerful built-in file group rename utility... The user can insert his own in the name and extension of each file text string, current date and time, counter, to number files with the same name and other information. At the same time, available search and replacement separate fragments of the name and extension. By the way, in addition to renaming files, Total Commander allows you to change labels (names) of hard drives.

Each file or folder can be supplied user comments, which will further organize the information stored on the computer.

Total Commander allows split large files into chunksto store them or transfer them to another computer using various media: floppy disks, ZIP disks and CD-Rs. Of course, the reverse is also available. file assembly operationbroken into fragments. Sometimes, when transferring information from computer to computer on unreliable magnetic media, files can be damaged. Before starting copying, create so-called checksum files ( * .svf). Then, on the new computer, the svf files will help Total Commander to determine that the transfer was successful and the information was not damaged.

From Total Commander, the user can quickly invoke text editors Notebook and WordPad, Windows Control Panel... In addition, you can open a hard-to-reach folder with one click Desktop.

The file manager has some built-in tools for working with The Internet... For example, it supports its own file upload utility and a full-fledged FTP client, which allows not only to pick up files from the Internet, but also upload your own files to a remote server, for example, from a hosting provider.

The program interface is quite user-friendly and provides various customization options for users of different skill levels. On the Internet, the user can easily find a huge number of additional modules ( plugins), which will further expand the list of Total Commander functions.

If you conduct a survey among experienced PC users on the best file manager, then there is a high probability that most of the participants will call the program Total Commander. This is a convenient, free, functional and fast program for managing the file system of a computer, for mounting images, connecting to FTP servers, quickly copying data between disks and removable media, and, in general, an indispensable tool for anyone who wants to communicate with their computer on you ...

One of the significant advantages of Total Commander is the hotkeys, of which there are countless numbers in this application. In addition, you can customize these keys for yourself, so that using one keyboard to get to the desired folders and perform various actions.

Over time, when a month or two passes, you will learn to work with a PC without a mouse, but only using various keyboard shortcuts in your work. In this article, you will learn how to make your own keyboard shortcuts, what are the most popular keyboard shortcuts, and how to handle them correctly.

How to customize keyboard shortcuts in Total Commander

The possibilities of customizing your combinations of buttons to open any directories or perform certain actions in Total Commander are practically unlimited. That is, you will create various functions along the way, when the need arises. For example, you are constantly working with two disks and a folder. In order not to waste time searching for this directory in the file system, you can set the appropriate combination for opening the directory in the Total Commander settings and use it. Once you try it, you will realize that this is an invaluable feature of this file manager!

The function that is responsible for opening the directory is cd. If you've used the standard Far manager before, you are probably familiar with this function. To go to a specific folder, you need to enter cd and the path to the folder. But thanks to the thoughtful settings of Total Commander, you can configure the activation of this function using certain keys. To do this, go to the "Start" menu. Then press the "Add" button and enter the name of the folder in the line, and in the command field write cd and the path to the directory. For example: cd d: \\ Video - this command will open the Video folder on drive D. Even below you need to register a key combination that will invoke this command. Unfortunately, through the "Start" menu you will not be able to find out whether this combination is busy with any function, so first check it through the Total Commander interface.

In addition to quickly accessing popular folders, you can also customize other functions. This can be done in the "Configuration" menu in the "General" section. There find the item "Settings" and in it the "Predefine hotkeys" tab. If you have installed the Russian version of Total Commander, then you can quickly figure out what's what. If any key combinations seem inconvenient to you, then you can easily change them for yourself to make using Total Commander even easier. Don't get too carried away with adding all the functions in a row for the keys. Do this only if there is a real need and it will speed up the work with the file manager interface. For example, a very useful function is “On / Off. demonstration of hidden files ". Sometimes they get in the way, but if you need to quickly see their presence, then hotkeys will always help.

What are the convenient hotkeys in Total Commander

You may not have to configure anything, since the standard capabilities of Total Commander are quite enough for you to quickly perform the necessary operations on your computer without wasting your time. Here is a list of the most useful combinations that will probably come in handy in your work:

  1. Alt + "+" (meaning the plus located in the Num-keyboard) - this combination activates the selection of all files of the same format as the current one. That is, for example, you click on a GIF-format picture, hold down the two indicated keys, and all GIF-files in the directory are instantly selected.
  2. Sometimes the user needs to see the tree (path) of the file system. In Explorer, this function is activated by default, and in Total, you must press Ctrl + F8 to turn on the "breadcrumbs" mode. And in order to hide the path, and accordingly speed up the program, hold down the Ctrl + F1 keys.
  3. It happens that there are many subfolders in one directory, and one of them contains the file you need. You don't remember its name, so you have to open folder by folder until you get to the cherished directory with the desired file. But this process can be greatly simplified - just press Ctrl + B - all folders and internal directories of the directory will open in a single list, and you will quickly find the data you are looking for.
  4. If you use Total Commander to work with text documents to organize them, search for text fragments, etc., then you will definitely need the Shift + F4 key combination - a new text file will be automatically created and the editor for it will open. It is much easier than clicking the "Create" button with a mouse and choosing from the drop-down list the program in which you want to generate the text.
  5. Another feature that many dreamed of, but did not know how to activate, is moving a file with automatic renaming. Many have had a situation when you want to copy a file, and the system gives the error "A file with the same name already exists." Using the keyboard shortcut Shift + F4, you will quickly forget about this annoying error.
  6. You will also need a search function, for which many install Total on a computer. The fact is that this manager allows you to find duplicates on your computer, search the entire disk inside text documents, search by size, format, and even the content of audio files. To quickly bring up the search menu, hold down Alt + F7.
  7. And if you have long dreamed of having the same history in the explorer as in the browser, with the ability to view the last visited folders, then Total has already implemented this option. To call it, press Alt + down, that is, the down arrow on the keyboard.

Over time, you will learn to cope with the huge number of key combinations that are available in Total Commander. Please note that those combinations of buttons that work in the explorer in Total Commander can call a completely different function. Perhaps you know that in Explorer to select all files, the combination Ctrl + F is used. And in Total, for this you need to press Ctrl + "+" (plus, which is located in the Num-part of the keyboard). And to deselect it, replace the plus with a minus.

As you are reading this article, you are interested in learning more about useful keyboard shortcuts. Therefore, it is recommended to go to the folder with the Total Commander program and find the KEYBOARD.TXT file. It contains all the information about the combinations of buttons that are available in Total.
